Abstract

We present a theoretical study of solitonlike solutions and their dynamics of ultracold superfluid Fermi gases trapped in a time-dependent three-dimensional (3D) harmonic potential with gain or loss. The 3D analytical solitonlike solutions are obtained without introducing any additional integrability constraints used elsewhere. The propagation of both bright- and dark-soliton-like solutions is investigated. We show that the amplitudes of dark-soliton-like solutions exhibit periodic oscillation, whereas those of the bright-soliton-like ones do not show such behavior. Moreover, we highlight that the oscillation periods of dark-soliton-like solutions predicted by our approach are matched very well with those observed in a recent experiment carried out by Yefsah et al. [T. Yefsah, A. T. Sommer, M. J. H. Ku, L. W. Cheuk, W. Ji, W. S. Bakr, and M. W. Zwierlein, Nature (London) 499, 426 (2013)NATUAS0028-083610.1038/nature12338] in both Bose-Einstein condensation and unitarity regimes.

Dark-soliton dynamics and snake instability in superfluid Fermi gases trapped by an anisotropic harmonic potential

Wen Wen, Changqing Zhao, Xiaodong Ma

We present an investigation of generation, dynamics, and stability of dark solitons in anisotropic Fermi gases for a range of particle numbers and trap aspect ratios within the framework of the order-parameter equation. We calculate the periods of dark solitons oscillating in a trap and find good agreement with the results based on the Bogoliubov--de Gennes equations. By studying the stability of initially off-center dark solitons under various tight transverse confinements in the unitarity limit, we not only give the criterion of dynamical stability, but also find that the soliton and a hybrid of solitons and vortex rings can be characterized by different oscillation periods. The stability criterion is not fulfilled by the parameters of the recent experiment of Yefsah et al. [Nature (London) 499, 426 (2013)]. Therefore, instead of a very slow oscillation as observed experimentally, we find that the created dark soliton undergoes a transverse snake instability with a collapse into vortex rings, which propagate in solitonlike manner with a nearly 2 times larger period.

OSCILLATORY DARK SOLITON IN ULTRACOLD FERMI GAS DURING BEC-BCS CROSSOVER WITH HARMONIC TRAPPING POTENTIAL

Shaohong Li, Xinwei Fan, Yalun Li +1 more

Based on the polytropic approximation, we model the ultracold Fermi gas in harmonic trapping potential with three dimensional generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GGPE). Through selfsimilar approach and without introducing any integrability constraint, we analytically solve the 3D GGPE identifying the oscillatory dark soliton solution. The oscillation period we calculated varies with polytropic index, corroborating qualitatively the feature observed in relevant experimental work.

Dark soliton pair of ultracold Fermi gases for a generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation model

Ying Wang, Yu Long Zhou, Shuyu Zhou +1 more

We present the theoretical investigation of dark soliton pair solutions for one-dimensional as well as three-dimensional generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GGPE) which models the ultracold Fermi gas during Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer-Bose-Einstein condensates crossover. Without introducing any integrability constraint and via the self-similar approach, the three-dimensional solution of GGPE is derived based on the one-dimensional dark soliton pair solution, which is obtained through a modified F-expansion method combined with a coupled modulus-phase transformation technique. We discovered the oscillatory behavior of the dark soliton pair from the theoretical results obtained for the three-dimensional case. The calculated period agrees very well with the corresponding reported experimental result [Weller et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 130401 (2008)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.101.130401], demonstrating the applicability of the theoretical treatment presented in this work.

Bright solitary-matter-wave collisions in a harmonic trap: Regimes of solitonlike behavior

Alan D. Martin, Charles S. Adams, S. A. Gardiner

Systems of solitary waves in the one-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation, which models a trapped atomic Bose-Einstein condensate, are investigated theoretically. To analyze the soliton nature of these solitary waves, a particle analogy for the solitary waves is formulated. Exact soliton solutions exist in the absence of an external trapping potential, which behave in a particlelike manner, and we find the particle analogy we employ to be a good model also when a harmonic trapping potential is present up to a gradual shift in the trajectories when the harmonic trap period is short compared with the collision time of the solitons. We find that the collision time of the solitons is dependent on the relative phase of the solitons as they collide. In the case of two solitons, the particle model is integrable, and the dynamics are completely regular. In the case of a system of two solitary waves of equal norm, the solitons are shown to retain their phase difference for repeated collisions. This phase preservation can be used to find regimes where there is agreement between the wave and particle models. This also implies that soliton regimes may be found in three-dimensional geometries where solitary waves can be made to repeatedly collide out of phase, stabilizing the condensate against collapse. The extension to three particles supports both regular and chaotic regimes. The trajectory shift observed for two solitons carries over to the case of three solitons. This shift aside, the agreement between the particle model and the wave dynamics remains good, even in chaotic regimes.

Dark soliton solution of the three-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation with an isotropic harmonic potential and nonlinearity in polytropic approximation

Xinwei Fan, Yu Long Zhou, Yalun Li +2 more

We study the three-dimensional Fermi gas in an isotropic harmonic trap during the Bardeen- Cooper-Schrieffer superfluid to Bose-Einstein condensate (BCS-BEC) crossover, which is modeled by using the generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GGPE) in the polytropic approximation. We analytically solved the 3D GGPE with a coupled modulus-phase transformation without introducing any additional integrability constraint, reaching the dark soliton-like solution. We find that the dark soliton identified undergoes an oscillation with a constant period over the whole BCS-BEC crossover region, although the amplitude of the dark soliton varies with polytropic index, demonstrating the peculiar nonlinear properties for the system modeled by using the 3D GGPE.

Dark solitons in a Gross–Pitaevskii equation with a power-law nonlinearity: application to ultracold Fermi gases near the Bose–Einstein condensation regime

D Yan, P. G. Kevrekidis, D. J. Frantzeskakis

In this work, we consider a model of a defocusing nonlinear Schrodinger equation with a variable nonlinearity exponent. This is motivated by the study of a superfluid Fermi gas in the Bose–Einstein condensation (BEC)–Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer crossover. In particular, we focus on the relevant mean-field model in the regime from BEC to unitarity and especially consider the modification of the nearly black soliton oscillation frequency due to the variation in the nonlinearity exponent in a harmonic trapping potential. The analytical expressions given as a function of the relevant nonlinearity exponent are corroborated by numerical computations and also extended past the BEC limit.
