Abstract

Conventional bit-flipping (BF) algorithms spectacularly fail to handle punctured LDPC codes as they use hard decisions and, therefore, they cannot effectively cope with zero-reliability punctured symbols. However, BF techniques lead to low-cost high-speed decoders. This paper introduces a novel method that enables the use of BF-based iterative decoders for punctured LDPC codes. An erasure preprocessor is introduced and is shown to successfully mitigate the impact of puncturing, substantially improving the coding gain achieved for punctured codes under BF decoding. The proposed technique renders BF decoding of punctured codes useful, something that was not possible so far to our knowledge. Furthermore, two hardware architectures are introduced and evaluated. Hardware sharing is shown to efficiently exploit common structures in the proposed combined erasure and BF decoder, leading to a new architecture found to be particularly efficient. The proposed architecture requires extremely low hardware resources, facilitating full-parallel architectures that sustain multi-Gbps throughput rates when implemented on Virtex-7 FPGA devices.

A novel high-throughput, low-complexity bit-flipping decoder for LDPC codes

Khoa Le, Fakhreddine Ghaffari, David Declercq +2 more

This paper presents a new high-throughput, low-complexity Bit Flipping (BF) decoder for Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes on the Binary Symmetric Channel (BSC), called Probabilistic Parallel Bit Flipping (PPBF). The advantage of PPBF comes from the fact that, no global operation is required during the decoding process and from that, all of the computations could be parallelized and localized at the computing units. Also in PPBF, the probabilistic feature in flipping the Variable Node (VN) is incorporated for all satisfaction level of its CN neighbors. This type of probabilistic incorporation makes PPBF more dynamic to correct some error patterns which are unsolvable by other BF decoders. PPBF offers a faster decoding process with an equivalent error correction performance to the Probabilistic Gradient Descent Bit Flipping (PGDBF) decoder, which is better than all so-far introduced BF decoders in BSC channel. A hardware implementation architecture of PPBF is also presented in this paper with detailed circuits for the probabilistic signal generator and processing units. The implementation of PPBF on FPGA confirms that, the PPBF complexity is much lower than that of the PGDBF and even lower than the one of the deterministic Gradient Descent Bit Flipping (GDBF) decoder. The good decoding performance along with the high throughput and low complexity lead PPBF decoder to become a brilliant candidate for the next generation of communication and storage standards.

An efficient bit-flipping decoding algorithm for LDPC codes

Tso-Cho Chen

In this paper, a new method for improving hard-decision bit-flipping (BF) decoding is proposed for low-density parity-check codes. The flipping criterion is derived theoretically from the soft-decision belief-propagation decoding algorithm. The proposed BF decoding algorithm is channel independent and is improved by introducing a more efficient method for computing the reliability of the parity checks. Extensive simulations are provided to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed algorithm. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can achieve about 1.5dB coding gain improvement at BER = 5×10−6while reducing up to 48% iterations for decoding and maintaining low decoding complexity, compared with the conventional weighted BF algorithm.

Improved Bit-Flipping Method for Decoding Structured Low-Density Parity-Check Codes

Meiling Zhang

An improved bit-flipping(BF) algorithm with low complexity for decoding structured low-density parity-check codes(LDPC) is proposed to improve the performance of the hard-decision BF algorithm. The hard-decision bits are divided into two groups based on the magnitudes of the received symbols, and at each iteration, the proposed algorithm can flip more than one bit with using two thresholds, and the flipping error probability is effectively decreased. The improved BF algorithm requires some real number comparisons before iterations and requires only logical operations during the iterations.Compared with the weighted bit-flipping algorithm and its modifications, the new method is with significantly lower complexity.Simulations show that the proposed algorithm is provided with very fast convergence speed and excellent performance with significantly low complexity.

Improved Iterative Bit Flipping Decoding Algorithms for LDPC Convolutional Codes

Xin Sheng Zhou, B.F. Cockburn, Stephen Bates

A new class of iterative bit flipping (BF) decoding algorithms adapted for low-density parity check (LDPC) convolutional codes is proposed. Compared with Gallager's original BF algorithm, the new BF algorithms improve both the coding gain and the error correction speed. At a bit error rate (BER) of 10 , the best of the new bit-flipping algorithms achieves, after only 6 iterations and with much simpler decoding hardware, a coding gain within 3.5 dB of that of the conventional min-sum belief propagation decoding algorithm.

Enhanced Bit-Flipping Decoding Using Refined Checksum Weights and Flip Metrics for LDPC Codes

Tofar C.-Y. Chang, Po-Ming Chou, Kai-Chieh Lin +1 more

Bit-flipping (BF) algorithms for decoding low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes have attracted considerable attention due to their low complexity and high parallelism. While recent improvements have enabled certain BF decoders to approach the performance of belief-propagation (BP) decoding, many of these enhancements rely on complex mechanisms such as loop detection, decoder switching, or costly online computations. In this paper, we propose enhanced BF decoding algorithms that integrate refined checksum weighting and flipping function designs. The proposed weighting scheme jointly exploits soft-valued channel information and hard-decision consistency to better reflect the reliability of each checksum, while maintaining negligible online complexity. Additionally, we propose a flipping function design that implicitly discourages repeated flipping by incorporating the accumulated flip count into its computation, thus suppressing decoding loops without requiring explicit loop detection or decoder switching. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed decoding strategies yield notable performance gains over existing BF decoders, with only a minor complexity increase.

Hard-Decision Bit-Flipping Decoder Based on Adaptive Bit-Local Threshold for LDPC Codes

Yuanhua Liu, Meiling Zhang

This letter presents two novel adaptive bit-local threshold bit-flipping algorithms for improving the hard-decision decoding performance of LDPC codes. The threshold of each bit can be changed adaptively to maximize the number of corrected errors during the iterations. The proposed methods require only logical operations during decoding and can be realized easily by hardware. Compared with the existing adaptive threshold BF algorithm, the proposed algorithms achieve better performance while removing the need for the delay-inducing global maximum operations, thus facilitating high-throughput decoding.
