By combining the quantum theory of radiative transition with multichannel quantum-defect theory, we have derived a general formula to calculate the lifetimes of highly excited states for atoms. As an example, we have evaluated the lifetimes for the perturbed 6snd
1D2 (n=8--40) and 6snd
3D2 (n=10--26) Rydberg levels, and the perturbers of the ytterbium atom. We have not only obtained results that are in perfect agreement with the recent measurements, but also predicted the lifetimes of 18 other highly excited states. The results indicate that the dramatic variation for lifetimes of Rydberg states in the vicinity of perturbing states is due to the strong channel interaction.
The Rydberg states and 4f135d6s6p valence state of neutral ytterbium of diff-erent |m| values are obtained by two-step excitation using polarized lasers. The field-ioaization thresholds for 6sns 1S0 (n=21-28, |m|=0) and 6snd 1D2 (n=20-27, |m|=0,1) Rydberg states as well as 4f135d6s6p valence state are measured. The thresholds are also calculated by introducing a Stark effective quantum number ns. The comparision between the experimental and calculated results is furnished. The interaction of valence state with Rydberg states, which affets the thresholds, is dis-cussed.
Natural radiative lifetimes of ytterbium in the 6snd
1D2 (n=10--29), 6snd
3D2 (n=10--20) Rydberg sequences have been measured using stepwise excitation and a fluorescence-decay monitoring method. The lifetimes are perturbed by the 4${f}^{13}$5d6s6p configuration near n=11 and 27, except when the
n∗3 dependence of the lifetime values appeared. The lifetimes of the perturbing 5d6s6p states were also measured.
