The effects of control field detuning on the modulation instability in a three-level quantum well system

Abstract

The paper presents a theoretical study of the modulation instability of a continuous or quasi-continuous optical probe in a three level quantum well system under electromagnetically induced transparency. The modulation instability is affected by the control field detuning, as well as even-order dispersion and by the strength of Kerr (third-order) and quintic (fifth-order) nonlinearities. The fourth-order dispersion reduces the bandwidth over which modulation instability occurs, whereas the quintic nonlinearity saturates the growth of the modulation instability. Detuning the control field from resonance can significantly reduce the growth of the modulation instability at both low and high power levels. At low powers, the system becomes stable against modulation instability for small detuning of the control field and at high powers modulation instability disappears for larger detuning.

Effect of quintic nonlinearity on self-phase modulation and modulation instability in multiple coupled quantum wells under electromagnetically induced transparency

Rohit Mukherjee, Swapan Konar

The self-phase modulation and modulation instability of an optical probe electromagnetic field in multiple quantum well systems under electromagnetically induced transparency has been investigated. The probe field experiences large Kerr and quintic nonlinearities that can be controlled by two controlling laser beams. The probe beam experiences self-phase modulation which is suppressed by the quintic nonlinearity. The probe field is modulationally unstable due to the existence of large nonlinearities. The bandwidth of unstable frequencies and growth of the instability could be controlled by the probe beam power, the Rabi frequency and detunings of two control fields. The presence of the higher order nonlinearity and dispersion significantly reduce the instability growth and bandwidth of unstable frequency.

Phase-sensitive modulation instability in asymmetric coupled quantum wells

Rohit Mukherjee, Swapan Konar, Puspashree Mishra

This paper presents a theoretical investigation of the phase-sensitive modulation instability of a continuous or quasicontinuous probe beam in an asymmetric coupled quantum well (ACQW) system facilitated by electromagnetically induced transparency. The dispersive properties of the probe beam can be controlled not only by the Rabi frequency of the control field but by the relative phase between them as well. The ACQW system exhibits large Kerr and quintic nonlinearities which could be controlled by controlling the relative phase of the probe beam. The probe beam is modulation unstable, and the gain and the bandwidth of unstable frequencies could be controlled by the phase of the probe beam. The gain of the instability disappears at certain values of phase and at certain other values of the phase the gain of the instability, and the bandwidth of unstable frequencies could be made large. Similarly, at certain values of the probe phase, the interplay of fourth-order dispersion and nonlinearity leads to the creation of discrete sidebands of the modulation instability. Both the fourth-order dispersion and quintic nonlinearity considerably reduces the growth and bandwidth of unstable frequencies.

Stabilization of modulation instability by control field in semiconductor quantum wells

Monika Nath, Rohit Mukherjee, Nitu Borgohain

This article explores the modulation instability of a continuous or quasi-continuous weak probe pulse in a three-level asymmetric double quantum wells under an electromagnetically induced transparency regime, controlled by a strong laser beam. The dynamics of modulation instability reveals that the instability gain as well as its bandwidth is greatly influenced by control field Rabi frequency. The probe pulse is found to be almost stable against modulation instability for higher values of control field Rabi frequency. The results of this investigation may potentially apply for oscillation free generation of supercontinuum in quantum well nanostructures.

Temporal Optical Solitons Due to Kerr and Quintic Nonlinearities in Coupled Quantum Wells

S. Shwetanshumala, Swapan Konar, Anjan Biswas

The possibility of generation and propagation of ultraslow bright optical solitons in asymmetric three-coupled quantum well systems is studied in this paper. These bright solitons owe their existence to Kerr and quintic nonlinearities which arise due to a probe pulse and two controlling laser beams. We also demonstrate numerically that these solitons are stable. The modulation instability of a continuous or quasi-continuous wave probe beam has been also investigated and the role of quintic nonlinearity in suppressing this instability addressed.

All-optical switching via enhanced Kerr nonlinearity in three-level atoms

Hai Wang, David J. Goorskey, Min Xiao

Summary form only given. The reduced absorption and enhanced nonlinearity in a three-level electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) system are very important in achieving an effective all-optical switching action. The Kerr-nonlinear index of refraction of a three-level EIT medium can be greatly enhanced near resonance due to atomic coherence induced in such a system in comparison with a two-level atomic system, as we have shown by using an optical ring cavity. Both the magnitude and sign of the Kerr-nonlinear index change dramatically for different frequency detunings of the controlling (or coupling) or cavity (or probe) field. Bistability and dynamic instability occur when such a three-level /spl Lambda/-type EIT system is placed inside an optical ring cavity and the controlling and cavity input intensities to exceed certain threshold values. In this paper, we present a recent experimental demonstration of controlling the cavity output intensity by modulating the frequency detuning of the controlling beam.

Adjustable triple electromagnetically induced transparency and Kerr nonlinearity in five-level coupled quantum wells

Rohit Mukherjee, Rohit Hazra, Nitu Borgohain

Abstract In this article, we present an alternative excitation scheme for the study of optical responses of the probe field in a five-level semiconductor coupled quantum wells (CQWs). It is shown that in the linear case, our study reveals the formation of double and triple electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) windows for the suitable values of Rabi-frequency of the control fields, while the linear dispersion is also tuned from anomalous to normal and vice versa within small range of detuning. Interestingly, we find that by properly adjusting the appropriate values of control field detunings, the behaviour of optical absorption and transparency is found to be asymmetric in nature. In addition, we also found that due to quantum coherence, nonlinear dispersion, specifically Kerr nonlinearity is dramatically enhanced with nearly vanishing linear absorption under EIT. The Kerr nonlinearity in the present scheme is identified to be very large (\(\:\sim{10}^{-13}\:{m}^{2}\:{V}^{-2}\)) in the mid IR range (\(\:{\lambda\:}_{p}=4.74\:\:\mu\:m\)), which can be very useful for the investigation of several nonlinear phenomena at low light intensity in CQWs. The results of the investigations may have potential applications in optical switching devices at low powers, quantum information processing and many more in solid-state laser based system.
