Secrecy analysis of unauthenticated amplify-and-forward relaying with antenna selection

Jing Huang, Amitav Mukherjee, Arnold Lee Swindlehurst

We investigate the secrecy outage performance for a cooperative unauthenticated relay network where antenna selection is employed at the multi-antenna relay. Both traditional amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying and a cooperative jamming (CJ) protocol are studied. We characterize the exact secrecy outage probability (SOP) for the AF scheme, and analyze the asymptotic behaviour in terms of SOP for the CJ scheme. Although both the unauthenticated relay and the destination perceive diversity gain from antenna selection, we show that as the number of antennas grows, the SOP approaches one for AF, while it approaches zero for CJ. For a fixed number of antennas, we demonstrate that the CJ scheme is better than AF relaying for high SNR, and its SOP approaches zero when the SNR goes to infinity. The theoretical analysis is also validated via several numerical examples.

On the Application of Cooperative Transmission to Secrecy Communications

Information theoretic security has recently emerged as an effective physical layer approach to provide secure communications. The outage performance of such a secrecy communication system is considered in this paper, since it is an important criterion to measure whether users' predefined quality of service can be met. Provided that the legitimate receiver and eavesdropper have the same noise power, many existing secure schemes cannot achieve outage probability approaching zero, regardless of how large the transmission power is. By introducing cooperative transmission into secrecy communication systems, it will be shown here that outage probability approaching zero can be achieved. In particular, scenarios with single-antenna nodes and multiple-antenna nodes will both be addressed, and the optimal design of beamforming/precoding will be investigated. Explicit expressions of the achievable outage probability and diversity-multiplexing tradeoff will be developed to demonstrate the performance of the proposed cooperative secure transmission schemes, and numerical results are presented.

Outage constrained secrecy rate maximization using cooperative jamming

Shuangyu Luo, Jiangyuan Li, Athina P. Petropulu

We consider a Gaussian MISO wiretap channel, where a multi-antenna source communicates with a single-antenna destination in the presence of a single-antenna eavesdropper. The communication is assisted by multi-antenna helpers that act as jammers to the eavesdropper. Each helper independently transmits noise, which lies in the null space of the helper-destination channel, thus creating no interference to the destination. Under source-eavesdropper channel uncertainty, we derive the optimal source covariance matrix that maximizes the secrecy rate subject to probability of outage and power constraints. Further, for the case in which the helper-eavesdropper channels follow a zero-mean Gaussian model with known covariances, we derive the outage probability in a closed form. Simulation results in support of the analysis are provided.
