Abstract

We review the current state of research in qudit-based quantum key distribution with an emphasis on experimental techniques used for state preparation and measurements. The question of practical usefulness of this schemes and of qudit-based QKD in general is addressed.

Practical quantum key distribution networks: a mini-review

Maximilian Tippmann, Jakob Kaltwasser, Maximilian Mengler +2 more

Abstract Quantum key distribution (QKD) enables information-theoretically secure communication based on the laws of quantum physics. Although QKD remains an active area of research, ongoing commercialization efforts underscore its growing significance in modern physics and communication. This mini-review provides a brief overview of existing multi-user QKD networks and ongoing developments, with an emphasis on field tests. We examine different network architectures. In addition, we explore the prospect of photonic integrated circuits (PICs) and their current capabilities in QKD implementations. We also present various post-processing algorithms focusing on error correction (EC) and privacy amplification (PA), as well as implementations of these protocols in different experiments. Finally, we conclude by providing an overview of our quantum network and discussing setup choices from our recent field tests.

I will try to partially answer, based on a review on recent work, the following question: Can QKD and more generally quantum information be useful to cover some practical security requirements in current (and future) IT infrastructures ? I will in particular cover the following topics - practical performances of QKD - QKD network deployment - SECOQC project - Capabilities of QKD as a cryptographic primitive - comparative advantage with other solution, in order to cover practical security requirements - Quantum information and Side-channels - QKD security assurance - Thoughts about "real" Post-Quantum Cryptography

Towards Global Quantum Key Distribution

Haoran Zhang, Haotao Zhu, Ruihua He +4 more

Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) supports the negotiation and sharing of private keys with unconditional security between authorized parties. Over the years, theoretical advances and experimental demonstrations have successfully transitioned QKD from laboratory research to commercial applications. As QKD expands its reach globally, it encounters challenges such as performance limitations, cost, and practical security concerns. Nonetheless, innovations in satellite-based QKD and the development of new protocols are paving the way towards a worldwide network. In this review, we provide an overview of QKD implementations, with a focus on protocols, devices, and quantum channels. We discuss the challenges of practical QKD and explore long-haul QKD. Additionally, we highlight the future research directions that are expected to significantly advance the realization of a global QKD network.

Quantum key distribution protocols: A contemporary review

Priya C. Jaya, alias Jeyanthi K. Meena

Over the past few decades, cryptography has played a pivotal role in strengthening information security, introducing groundbreaking methods to safeguard data confidentiality and integrity. Among these innovations, quantum cryptography has emerged as a rapidly evolving discipline, addressing critical challenges associated with secure communication. One of its most significant contributions is Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), a robust framework for establishing secure cryptographic keys between legitimate parties. This paper offers a detailed technical review of QKD protocols developed over the last thirty years, analyzing the fundamental principles governing key generation through quantum mechanics and advanced encryption techniques. Furthermore, it explores the interdependencies among core QKD protocol elements, proposing enhancements to strengthen the cryptosystem. Quantitative evaluations of QKD protocols are presented, with particular emphasis on runtime performance. Additionally, this paper outlines a generalized model of each reviewed protocol, grounded in robust security principles.

A Survey on Quantum Key Distribution

László Gyöngyösi, László Bacsárdi, Sándor Imre

Quantum key distribution (QKD) protocols represent an important practical application of quantum information theory. QKD schemes enable legal parties to establish unconditionally secret communication by exploiting the fundamental attributes of quantum mechanics. Here we present an overview of QKD rotocols. We review the principles of QKD systems, the implementation basis, and the application of QKD protocols in the standard Internet and the quantum Internet.

[EN] This paper provides a review of the most important and widely used Quantum Key Distribution systems and then describes our recently proposed scheme based on Subcarrier Multiplexing that opens the possibility of parallel Quantum Key Distribution. We report the first-ever experimental implementation of parallel quantum key distribution using this technique showing a maximum multiplexing gain.
