Algebraic properties of ground states of BCS and BEC superfluids

Abstract

By using Bogoliubov transformations to construct the ground states of fermionic Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superfluids and weakly-interacting Bose gases supporting Bose Einstein Condensation (BEC), their algebraic structures and implications can be analyzed in detail. Both ground states are generalized squeezed coherent states saturating a generalized Heisenberg uncertainty relation, and they acquire quantized Berry phases when the corresponding systems are transported along a closed path in their parameter spaces. While the Berry phase of the BCS ground state depends on the total particle number, the Berry phase of the BEC ground state depends only on the particles outside the BEC. The Berry phases are associated with magnetic monopoles in the parameter spaces and we found that the Dirac quantization condition is satisfied. Moreover, both ground states are entangled states of the fermion or boson quanta and we found the entanglement entropy quantifying the internal correlations. A fixed particle-number approach of fermionic superfluids does not saturate the generalized uncertainty relation, exhibits internal entanglement, and gives corresponding Berry phase. In addition, the algebraic structures of the ground states can be classified by the $q$-deformed Hopf algebra, $\bigoplus_{\mathbf{k}}h_{q_{\mathbf{k}}}(1)$ for bosons and $q$-deformed Hopf superalgebra $\bigoplus_{\mathbf{k}}h_{q_{\mathbf{k}}}(1|1)$ for fermions, respectively.

BCS to BEC evolution and quantum phase transitions in superfluid Fermi gases

M. Iskin

This thesis focuses on the analysis of Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) \nto Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) evolution in ultracold superfluid \nFermi gases when the interaction between atoms is varied. The tuning of \nattractive interactions permits the ground state of the system to evolve from a weak \nfermion attraction BCS limit of loosely bound and largely overlapping Cooper pairs \nto a strong fermion attraction limit of tightly bound small bosonic molecules \nwhich undergo BEC. \nThis evolution is accompanied by anomalous behavior of many superfluid \nproperties, and reveals several quantum phase transitions. \nThis thesis has two parts: \nIn the first part, I analyze zero and nonzero orbital angular momentum \npairing effects, and show that a quantum phase transition occurs for \nnonzero angular momentum pairing, unlike the $s$-wave case where the BCS \nto BEC evolution is just a crossover. \nIn the second part, I analyze two-species fermion mixtures with mass and \npopulation imbalance in continuum, trap and lattice models. In contrast with \nthe crossover physics found in the mass and population balanced mixtures, \nI demonstrate the existence of phase transitions between normal and \nsuperfluid phases, as well as phase separation between superfluid (paired) \nand normal (excess) fermions in imbalanced mixtures as a function of scattering \nparameter and mass and population imbalance.

Superconductor superfluid density from the Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer/Bose crossover theory

Israel Chávez, M. Grether, MANUEL DE LLANO

Abstract The superfluid density $$n_{s}(T)$$ n s ( T ) of a superconductor is calculated based on the generalized Bose–Einstein condensation (GBEC) theory that addresses a fully-interacting ternary boson-fermion gas mixture of free electrons as fermions, plus two-electron Cooper pairs (2eCPs) and also, explicitly, two-hole Cooper pairs (2hCPs), both as bosons. Here we consider two special cases (i) 100%–0% (i.e., with no condensed 2hCPs) and (ii) 0%–100% (i.e., with no condensed 2eCPs). Subsumed in GBEC are the Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer (BCS) and Bose–Einstein condensation (BEC) theories along with the BCS-BEC crossover theory extended with 2hCPs. We find that in the weak-coupling regime $$n_{s}(0)$$ n s ( 0 ) agrees with data from the Uemura et al. (2004) graph for several elemental SCs by taking in 3D with a quadratic energy-dispersion relation while in 2D with a linear relation are much too far below the data. In the strong-coupling regime the linear behavior of critical temperature $$T_{c}$$ T c vs $$n_{s}(0)$$ n s ( 0 ) obtained here is just as Božović et al. (2016) found. However, in 2D with a linear relation accounting for 0%–100%, $$n_{s}(T)/n_{s}(0)$$ n s ( T ) / n s ( 0 ) compares well with some high- $$T_{c}$$ T c -cuprate SC data between the two coupling regimes.

Bound States and Superfluidity in Strongly Coupled Fermion Systems

GERD RÖPKE

The two-particle spectrum in a dense Fermion system is treated using a thermodynamic Green function approach. A self-consistent description of possible bound states and a superfluid condensate in a correlated medium is given. A detailed understanding of superfluidity and superconductivity in correlated Fermion systems, especially the transition from the Cooper-paired state (weak-coupling limit) to the Bose condensed state of tightly bound pairs of Fermions (strong coupling limit) [1], is of great interest for very different physical systems. The problem of a unified treatment of Bose–Einstein condensation (BEC) and the Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer (BCS) phase arises not only in describing the electron structure of strongly correlated electron superfluids such as superconductors [2], the electronhole system in semiconductors [3], spin-polarized hydrogen and liquid He [4], but also in the theory of nuclear matter [5] and quark–gluon systems [6]. Recently, there have been several new approaches to this stimulating problem. A Monte-Carlo simulation of a finite He system at zero temperature has been performed in Ref. [7]. The microscopic theory of strongly coupled quantum fluids has been treated within the Jastrow approximation (cf. Ref. [8]) to obtain the ground state and low-lying excited states of strongly correlated boson quantum fluids. The crossover from weak to strong coupling superconductivity has been considered using a functional integral representation [2] (see also Ref. [7]).

Ground-State Properties of Superfluid Fermi Gas in Fourier-Synthesized Optical Lattices

Yan Chen, Kezhi Zhang, Xiaoliang Wang +1 more

By employing the balance condition between the lattice potential and the interatomic interaction, we study the ground state solutions of superfluid Fermi gases in Fourier-synthesized (FS) optical lattices. The average energy of the ground state, the atoms number, and the atom density distribution of the Fermi system are analytically derived along the Bose—Einstein condensation (BEC) side to the Bardeen—Cooper—Schrieffer (BCS) side. We analyze the properties of ground state solutions at both the BEC limit and unitarity in FS optical lattices. It is found that the relative phase α between the two lattice harmonics impacts greatly on the properties of the ground state of the superfluid Fermi gas. Especially in the BCS limit, when α = π/2, the average energy presents an exponential form with the increase of the potential depth of the lattice harmonics υ 2 . Meanwhile, there exits a minimal value. Moreover, due to the Fermi pressure, the atom density distribution at unitarity is more outstretched than that in the BEC limit. The average energy at unitarity is apparently larger than that in the BEC limit. The properties of the ground state solution exhibit very different behaviors when the system transits from the BEC side to the BCS side.

Modified many-body wave function for BCS-BEC crossover in Fermi gases

Shina Tan, Kathryn Levin

We present a many-body formalism for BCS-BEC crossover, which represents a modification of the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer-Leggett ground state to include four-fermion and higher correlations. In the Bose-Einstein condensate regime, we show how our approach contains the four-fermion behavior of Petrov et al. and associated scattering length ${a}_{dd}$ at short distances and, second, reduces to composite-boson Bogoliubov physics at long distances. It reproduces the Lee-Yang term, whose numerical value is also fixed by ${a}_{dd}$. We have also examined the next term beyond the Lee-Yang correction in a phenomenological fashion, building on cloud size data and collective mode experiments, although one has to view this phenomenological analysis with some caution since experiments are in a state of flux and are performed close to unitarity.
