Starting from the three-dimensional (3D) Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) and employing a q-Gaussian ansatz we derive a novel non-polynomial Schrodinger equation that models high-density disk-shaped Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs).
Abstract. In the first part of this article we briefly overview the fundamentals of Bose-Einstein condensation and survey a series of results concerning the effective equations which describe the dynamics of elongated and oblate Bose-Einstein conden-sates. In the second part of the paper we show how one can construct effective one- and two-dimensional polynomial Schrödinger equations which describe the longitudinal (transversal) dynamics of high-density cigar-shaped (pancake-shaped) Bose-Einstein condensates. These equations do not account for the interplay between the radial and the transversal modes of the condensate, but can accurately describe the dynamics of ef-fectively longitudinal (transversal) nonlinear waveforms through the rescaled effective
We study fundamental and vortical solitons in disk-morphed Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) subject to strong confinement along the axial direction. Starting from the three-dimensional (3D) Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE), we proceed to an effective two-dimensional (2D) nonpolynomial Schr\"odinger equation (NPSE) derived by means of the integration over the axial coordinate. Results produced by the latter equation are in very good agreement with those obtained from the full 3D GPE, including cases when the formal 2D equation with the cubic nonlinearity is unreliable. The 2D NPSE is used to predict the density profiles and dynamical stability of repulsive and attractive BECs with zero and finite topological charges in various planar trapping configurations, including the axisymmetric harmonic confinement and one-dimensional periodic potential. In particular, we find a stable dynamical regime that was not reported before, viz., periodic splitting and recombination of trapped vortices with topological charges 2 or 3 in the self-attractive BEC.
We present effective reduced equations for the study of a binary Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), where the confining potentials of the two BEC components have distinct asymmetry so that the components belong to different space dimensions as in a recent experiment [G. Lamporesi et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 153202 (2010).]. Starting from a binary three-dimensional (3D) Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) and using a Lagrangian variational approach we derive a binary effective nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation with components in different reduced dimensions, for example, the first component in one dimension and the second in two dimensions as appropriate to represent a cigar-shaped BEC coupled to a disk-shaped BEC. We demonstrate that the effective reduced binary equation, which depends on the geometry of the system, is quite reliable when compared with the binary 3D GPE and can be efficiently used to perform numerical simulation and analytical calculation for the investigation of static and dynamic properties of a binary BEC in mixed dimensions.
