In this article the method of variational Monte Carlo is briefly introduced and managed on t-J model for the case of half-filled.The calculated results support Anderson's suggestion that even for the half filled case,an RVB-type wave function might be the ground state or very close in energy to the ground state.
Ground-state properties of the one-dimensional Kondo lattice model are investigated using the quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulation method. To reduce the difficulty of the negative sign problem, we employ the variationally optimized singlet wave function. Since the improvement of Monte Carlo sampling efficiency is achieved in the half-filling case, we can perform the simulations on large systems (up to 26-site system). The QMC data on the local spin correlations are closely compared with those of the variational Monte Carlo (VMC) calculations as well as with the exact diagonalization data of the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yoshida (RKKY) lattice model. We find that the local spin correlation decays exponentially with the correlation length ${\ensuremath{\xi}}_{\mathit{f}\mathit{f}}$\ensuremath{\sim}2.54 in the QMC data, while ${\ensuremath{\xi}}_{\mathit{f}\mathit{f}}$\ensuremath{\sim}1.08 in the VMC results (J/t=1). This implies the absence of the long-range order (the existence of the spin gap) and the importance of intersite correlation effects which are not taken into account in the VMC results. On the other hand, the system size dependence is almost absent in the Kondo lattice model results, which contrasts the behavior in the RKKY data.
Choosing the Gutzwiller-type variational wave function and using the variational Monte Carlo (VMC) method, we have calculated the ground-state energies of two-dimensional (2D) Hubbard squares at temperature T=0 and have obtained the phase diagram in the small doping region (\ensuremath{\delta}=0--0.15). We do not find the spiral phase until at least U\ensuremath{\approxeq}20 in the half-filled and dilute-doping cases. This is different from the results obtained by C. Jayaprakash et al., who calculated the phase diagram of the 2D t-J model at temperature T=0 with the slave-fermion mean-field theory and found the spiral phase at much lower values of U/t.
We propose a Monte Carlo method, which is a hybrid method of the quantum Monte Carlo method and variational Monte Carlo theory, to study the Hubbard model. The theory is based on the off-diagonal and the Gutzwiller type correlation factors which are taken into account by a Monte Carlo algorithm. In the 4x4 system our method is able to reproduce the exact results obtained by the diagonalization. An application is given to investigate the half-filled band case of two-dimensional square lattice. The energy is favorably compared with quantum Monte Carlo data.
Two-dimensional t-J model is studied by a variational Monte Carlo method, using Gutzwiller-Jastrow-type wave functions. Various kinds of superconducting pairing symmetries are compared in order to determine the phase diagram of the ground state in the full J/t-n plane. Near the half filling where the high temperature superconductivity is expected, the d_{x^2-y^2} wave pairing state is always the most stable among various symmetries. The three-site term hardly changes the phase diagram in this regime. In the low electron density, the extended s-type wave becomes a quantitatively good state for large J/t, although the energy gain is small. The Gutzwiller wave function is shown to be the exact ground state in the low-electron-density limit for the supersymmetric case (J/t=2).
As a continuation of a previous paper [J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 56 (1987) 1490], the variational Monte-Carlo method is extended to include the antiferromagnetic long-range order. The theory is based on the Gutzwiller-type correlation factor and its effect is exactly taken into account by the Monte-Carlo procedure. An application is made to the half-filled-band case of one-dimensional lattice (50 sites), two-dimensional square lattice (up to 20×20 sites) and three-dimensional simple cubic lattice (6×6×6 sites). The result is qualitatively different from previous studies relying on the random-phase-type "Gutzwiller approximation." The variational energy for two and three dimensions is favorably compared with Hirsch's quantum Monte-Carlo data.
Recent refinements of analytical and numerical methods have improved our understanding of the ground-state phase diagram of the two-dimensional (2D) Hubbard model. Here, we focus on variational approaches, but comparisons with both quantum cluster and Gaussian Monte Carlo methods are also made. Our own ansatz leads to an antiferromagnetic ground state at half filling with a slightly reduced staggered order parameter (as compared to simple mean-field theory). Away from half filling, we find d-wave superconductivity, but confined to densities where the Fermi surface passes through the antiferromagnetic zone boundary (if hopping between both nearest-neighbour and next-nearest-neighbour sites is considered). Our results agree surprisingly well with recent numerical studies using the quantum cluster method. An interesting trend is found by comparing gap parameters Δ (antiferromagnetic or superconducting) obtained with different variational wave functions. Δ varies by an order of magnitude and thus cannot be taken as a characteristic energy scale. In contrast, the order parameter is much less sensitive to the degree of sophistication of the variational schemes, at least at and near half filling.
