Abstract

An improvement of the angular-momentum diagram is given.Attention has been paid to the quantization of the angular momentum in three directions.

Selection rules and centre-of-mass motion of ultracold atoms

S. J. van Enk

In recent years much attention has been paid to the quantized evolution of the centre-of-mass momentum and position of ultracold atoms in light fields. We consider the effects resulting from the quantization of the external angular momentum variables. We investigate how spin and orbital angular momentum of light are transferred to internal and external angular momentum of an atom in dipole and quadrupole transitions.

On the vector model of angular momentum

Peeter Saari

Abstract Instead of (or in addition to) the common vector diagram with cones, we propose to visualize the peculiarities of quantum mechanical angular momentum by a completely quantized 3D model. It spotlights the discrete eigenvalues and noncommutativity of components of angular momentum and corresponds to outcomes of measurements—real or computer-simulated. The latter can be easily realized by an interactive worksheet of a suitable program package of algebraic calculations. The proposed complementary method of visualization helps undergraduate students to better understand the counterintuitive properties of this quantum mechanical observable.
