Coherent optical pulse combination and pulse area evolution

Wei An

Abstract

Interaction equations of light with a two-level atomic system have been derived under conditions of relaxation, damping and detuning. Simulation results are given about the propagation of coherent light pulses in a resonant absorbing medium. In addition to pulse breakup, a new phenomenon of two-pulse combination and the evolution of pulse area have been observed theoretically.

Effects of frequency detuning on coherent optical pulse combination and area evolution

Wei An

A computer simulation of the effects of frequency detuning on coherent optical pulse combination and area evolution in an absorbing medium is given. We have found that the pulse combination and break-up, as well as stable pulse area, disappear when δ≠0.

Pulse Propagation Through a medium Consists of Two Three-Level Atoms

R. N. Rabea, M. A. El-Deberky, M. M. A. Ahmed

The coherent propagation of two optical short pulses through a resonant medium consisting of two three-level atoms in the configuration is investigated. A self-consisting analytical solution without steady state or adiabatic approximations is presented. The electric field in the model studied consists of two co-propagating plane waves, each of which is in near resonance with a transition in the absorber. The density matrix of two three level atoms is studied. Also, the reduced density matrices are stated. The present approach for the semiclassical treatment of resonant coherent interactions in three-level atoms represents a generalization of the Maxwell- Bloch equations for a two-level system. The Maxwell-Bloch equations reduced to the non-linear pendulum equation. The solution shows that the two pulses can propagate simultaneously without loss under some conditions about the pulses and the medium. The propagation of the two pulses through the medium without any constrains approves the self -induced transparency (SIT) phenomenon.

Near-resonant propagation of the light pulse in a homogeneously broadened two-level medium

W. Miklaszewski

Off-resonance light-pulse propagation in a homogeneously broadened medium composed of two-level atoms is numerically simulated. The dependence of the stabilization effect of the pulse area on the detuning and perpendicular relaxation rate is investigated. The dependence of carrier frequency on propagation distance is analyzed.

Peak Amplification and Breakup of a Coherent Optical Pulse in a Simple Atomic Absorber

H. M. Gibbs, R. E. Slusher

We report the low-loss propagation, peak amplification, and multiple breakup of a coherent laser pulse undergoing self-induced transparency by interacting with two nondegenerate levels of a highly absorbing gas of Rb atoms. These results are in good agreement with computer solutions of coupled Schr\"odinger and Maxwell equations including relaxation.

Coherent propagation of optical pulses in a two-level system driven by an intense laser beam

In F

Coherent propagation of two short optical pulses at different wavelengths in a two-level system driven by an intense laser beam is studied. An area theorem of the pulses has been obtained. The breakup of pulses in propagation and the phenomenon of mutual-induced transparancy have been found theoretically.
