Abstract

It is assumed that e(H) is the set of all positive contraction operators, and P(H) is the set of all orthogonal projections in Hilbert space H in this paper.Forthermore,A∈e(H) is called a quantum effect, called for short. If A,B∈e(H),A°B=A12BA12,is called the sequential product of effect A and B.By using the technique of operator block, the equivalent conditions of A°B∈P(H)when A,B∈e(H) or A,B∈P(H) are discussed respectively.Based on the theory of space decomposition, its geometry structure is further made more clear to be convenient to do research on its corresponding properties.

The Sequential Product of Quantum Effect

Chunfang Shao

For every A,B or A,B P(H),we defined the sequential product of A,B by AB= ABA.The main purpose of this article is to investigate some of the algebraic properties about the sequential product of quantum effect.Put some algebraic conditions on AB imply that A and B commute for the usual operator product. The result which S.Gudder got in(4),we give a wholely new proof by the technique of block operator matrix which makes the geometry structure of operators more clear.

Sequential quantum measurements

Stanley Gudder, Gabriel Nagy

A quantum effect is an operator A on a complex Hilbert space H that satisfies 0⩽A⩽I. We denote the set of quantum effects by E(H). The set of self-adjoint projection operators on H corresponds to sharp effects and is denoted by P(H). We define the sequential product of A,B∈E(H) by A∘B=A1/2BA1/2. The main purpose of this article is to study some of the algebraic properties of the sequential product. Many of our results show that algebraic conditions on A∘B imply that A and B commute for the usual operator product. For example, if A∘B satisfies certain distributive or associative laws, then AB=BA. Moreover, if A∘B∈P(H), then AB=BA and A∘B=B or B∘A=B if and only if AB=BA=B. A natural definition of stochastic independence is introduced and briefly studied.

Sequential product of quantum effects

Aurelian Gheondea, Stanley Gudder

Unsharp quantum measurements can be modelled by means of the class E ( H ) \mathcal {E}(\mathcal {H}) of positive contractions on a Hilbert space H \mathcal {H} , in brief, quantum effects. For A , B ∈ E ( H ) A,B\in \mathcal {E}(\mathcal {H}) the operation of sequential product A ∘ B = A 1 / 2 B A 1 / 2 A\circ B=A^{1/2}BA^{1/2} was proposed as a model for sequential quantum measurements. We continue these investigations on sequential product and answer positively the following question: the assumption A ∘ B ≥ B A\circ B\geq B implies A B = B A = B AB=BA=B . Then we propose a geometric approach of quantum effects and their sequential product by means of contractively contained Hilbert spaces and operator ranges. This framework leads us naturally to consider lattice properties of quantum effects, sums and intersections, and to prove that the sequential product is left distributive with respect to the intersection.

A note on the logic of bounded quantum observables

Yuan Li, Xiu-Hong Sun

The set of bounded observables for a quantum system is represented by the set of bounded self-adjoint operators S(H) on a complex Hilbert space H, and the quantum effects for a physical system can be described by the set E(H) of positive contractive operators on a complex Hilbert space H. In this note, by the techniques of operator block and spectral, we give the simpler representation of A∧P and obtained the new necessary and sufficient conditions for A∨P, for A∊S(H) and P∊P(H), where P(H) is the set of all orthogonal projection operators on H. In particular, we get that if A∨P exists, then A∨P∊E(H) for A∊E(H) and P∊P(H). In addition, we consider the relations between the existence of A∨B, A−∨B−, and A+∨B+, where A+, B+, A−, and B− are the positive and negative parts of A,B∊S(H).

Properties of Sequential Products

Stanley Gudder

Our basic concept is the set $\mathcal{E}(H)$ of effects on a finite dimensional complex Hilbert space $H$. If $a,b\in\mathcal{E}(H)$, we define the sequential product $a[\mathcal{I}]b$ of $a$ then $b$. The sequential product depends on the operation $\mathcal{I}$ used to measure $a$. We begin by studying the properties of this sequential product. It is observed that $b\mapsto a[\mathcal{I}]b$ is an additive, convex morphism and we show by examples that $a\mapsto a[\mathcal{I}]b$ enjoys very few conditions. This is because a measurement of $a$ can interfere with a later measurement of $b$. We study sequential products relative to Kraus, Lüders and Holevo operations and find properties that characterize these operations. We consider repeatable effects and conditions on $a[\mathcal{I}]b$ that imply commutativity. We introduce the concept of an effect $b$ given an effect $a$ and study its properties. We next extend the sequential product to observables and instruments and develop statistical properties of real-valued observables. This is accomplished by employing corresponding stochastic operators. Finally, we introduce an uncertainty principle for conditioned observables.

Sequential Products of Quantum Measurements

Stanley Gudder

Our basic structure is a finite-dimensional complex Hilbert space $H$. We point out that the set of effects on $H$ form a convex effect algebra. Although the set of operators on $H$ also form a convex effect algebra, they have a more detailed structure. W introduce sequential products of effect and operations. Although these have already been studied, we introduce the new concept of sequential products of effects with operations and operations with effects. We then consider various special types of operations. After developing properties of these concepts, the results are generalized to include observables and instruments. In particular, sequential products of observables with instruments and instruments with observables are developed. Finally, we consider conditioning and coexistence of observables and instruments.
