Spin Operator for the Relativistic Particle

Peng Zhang

Published Jan 1, 2000• 1 citation

Abstract

A systematic theory of the appropriate spin operators for the relativistic states is developed. This paper discusses it in particle case, i.e., the quantum mechanics problem. For a massive relativistic particle with arbitrary nonzero spin, the spin operator should be replaced with the relativistic one. In the frame of irreducible representation of Poincare group, this spin operator, which is named as moving spin and applied to all the canonical states of the particle, is constructed. Further discussion on the concept of moving spin in the quantum field theory will be followed.

Relativistic Spin Operators

ZHANGPeng-Fei, RUANTu-Nan

A systematic theory on the appropriate spin operators for the relativistic states is developed. For a massive relativistic particle with arbitrary nonzero spin, the spin operator should be replaced with the relativistic one, which is called in this paper as moving spin. Further the concept of moving spin is discussed in the quantum field theory. A new is constructed. It is shown that, in virtue of the two operators, problems in quantum field concerned spin can be neatly settled.

Relativistic spin operator and Dirac equation

Paweł Caban, Jakub Rembieliński, Marta Włodarczyk

We give a direct link between description of Dirac particles in the abstract framework of unitary representation of the Poincaré group and description with the help of the Dirac equation. In this context we discuss in detail the spin operator for a relativistic Dirac particle. We show also that the spin operator used in quantum field theory for spin $s=1/2$ corresponds to the Foldy-Woutheysen mean-spin operator.

Relativistic Particle Theories Without Canonical Quantization

Nisticò, Giuseppe

The diffculties of relativistic particle theories formulated my means of canonical quantization, such as Klein-Gordon and Dirac theories, ultimately led theoretical physicists to turn on quantum field theory to model elementary particle physics. The aim of the present work is to pursue a method alternative to canonical quantization that avoids these dfficulties. In order to guarantee this result, the present approach is constrained to be developed deductively from physical principles. The physical principles assumed for a free particle consist of the symmetry properties of the particle with respect to the Poincaré group and of the transformation properties of the position observable, expressed by means of a suitably conceived notion of quantum transformation. In so doing, the effectiveness of group theoretical methods is exploited. Our work has pointed out the necessity of new classes of irreducible representations of the Poincaré group the theory can be based on. For spin 0 particle, four inequivalent theories are completely determined, that differ from Klein-Gordon theory for the physical interpretation but also for the mathematical structures. In particular, two of these theories requires irreducible representations in the new classes. The present lack of the explicit transformation properties of position with respect to boosts forbids the complete determination of non zero spin particle theories. A particular form of these transformation properties was in past adopted by Jordan and Mukunda. We check its consistency within the present approach; it is found that for spin 1/2 particles there is only one consistent theory; it is unitarily related to Dirac theory, but, once again, it requires the new classes of irreducible representations.

Relativistic probability amplitudes I. Massive particles of any spin

Scott E. Hoffmann

We consider a massive particle of arbitrary spin and the basis vectors that carry the unitary, irreducible representations of the Poincaré group. From the complex coefficients in normalizable superpositions of these basis vectors, we identify momentum/spin-component probability amplitudes with the same interpretation as in the nonrelativistic theory. We find the relativistic transformations of these amplitudes, which are unitary in that they preserve the modulus-squared of scalar products from frame to frame. Space inversion and time reversal are also treated. We reconsider the Newton- Wigner construction of eigenvectors of position and the position operator. Position/spin-component probability amplitudes are also identified and their relativistic, unitary, transformations derived. Again, space inversion and time reversal are considered. For reference, we show how to construct positive energy solutions of the Klein-Gordon and Dirac equations in terms of probability amplitudes. We find the boost transformation of the position operator in the spinless case and present some results on the relativity of position measurements. We consider issues surrounding the classical concept of causality as it applies in quantum mechanics. We briefly examine the relevance of the results presented here for theories of interaction.

A new Hamilton operator for a massive relativistic particle with spin one in a generalized Heisenberg/Schrödinger picture

R.A. Frick

We consider a particular four-dimensional generalization of the transition from the Heisenberg to the Schrödinger picture. The space–time independent expansion with respect to the unitary irreducible representations of the Lorentz group is applied, as Fourier transformation in the Heisenberg picture, to the states of a massive relativistic particle. A new Hamilton operator has been found for such a particle with spin one.

Spin Operators for Massive Particles

Taeseung Choi, Sam Young Cho

Since the discovery a century ago, spin describing the intrinsic angular momentum of massive elementary particles has exposed its nature and significant roles in wide ranges of (relativistic) quantum phenomena and practical applications for future quantum technology. Emerging inconsistencies have also disclosed its telltale incomplete description. Finding relativistic spins (operators) of massive particles is a long-standing fundamental problem from the beginning of relativistic quantum mechanics. Here we present the rigorous derivation and the representation of spin operators from the spacetime symmetry. The covariant parity operation, defined by the spin operators, naturally leads to a fundamental equation equivalent to the covariant Dirac equation, which manifests existent relativistic spins. Proper understanding position operator in the Dirac theory on account of the spin operator through total angular momentum predicts no Zitterbewegung as well as conserving orbital and spin currents. The spin operators can be applicable for unraveling the inconsistencies and for exploring unveiled physics of massive particles.
