This article examines the essence of the phenomenon of interference and its physical nature. Interference caused by the effect of light waves is an important phenomenon that proves the wave nature of light. The article explains the basic formula of interference, conditions of constructive and destructive interference. In addition, an overview of interference in thin films and Jung's experience is given, and the fields of application of interference are considered. The article reveals the importance of the phenomenon of interference in physics and technology.

Interference phenomena with single-photon states

Ole Keller

The wave aspect of light is observed experimentally through interference phenomena, and in a certain sense such observations always require a division of the given (initial) light field into two or more space-time parts. The division can only be done by introducing matter (massive particles) in the field region, and the light-matter interaction inevitably changes the initial state of the field. Not least when one is dealing with single and few-photon interference, it is good to remember again a central point of Niels Bohr, namely that no elementary phenomenon is a phenomenon until it is a registered (observed) phenomenon. It turns out that it is possible to observe interference with a quantized electromagnetic field which contains only one photon. Since the irreversible final detection destroys the photon, it is in practice necessary to repeat the experiment starting from the same initial (given) conditions. Below we shall discuss the basics of single-photon interference in the simplest terms.

ANALYSIS OF LIGHT DIFFRACTION INTERFERENCE PATTERNS IN YOUNG'S DOUBLE SLIT EXPERIMENT

Putri Asnita Gulo

Young's double-slit experiment is a classic and fundamentaldemonstration in physics that strongly supports the wave nature of light throughthe phenomenon of interference. The study aims to deeply analyze the formationof diffraction and interference patterns of light that arise due to the pathdifferences between two coherent light sources. The experiment uses a simple yeteffective setup involving a monochromatic light source, two narrow slits placedclose together, and a screen placed at a certain distance to capture the resultinginterference pattern. Several variables are analyzed in the study, including thewavelength of the light used, the distance between two gaps and the distance fromone gap to anotherThe experimental results confirm the occurrence ofconstructive and destructive interference, resulting in the formation of stripesmoving from bright to dark in the layer. These stripes arise due to the phasedifference between overlapping light waves, and their spacing and clarity areaffected by the physical parameters of the setup. The analysis shows that thespacing between the stripes increases with longer wavelengths and decreases withwider slit spacing. In addition, the cohesion of the light source plays an importantrole in producing a clear and stable interference pattern. This experiment not onlyserves as a concrete verification of the theoretical wave principle in physics, butalso has broader implications in modern optical technologies such as diffractiongratings, holography, and quantum mechanics. This experiment is also relevantfor educational purposes because it provides an experiential learning opportunityfor students to understand the behavior of light and wave interactions. Therefore, this study is expected to be a useful reference in supporting the teaching andlearning of wave optics, especially in demonstrating the dual nature of light andits applications in real-world phenomena.

Asymmetrical Path Interference Test of Light

Mei Xiaochun

The asymmetrical path interference test of light is put forward in the paper. In the test, two different results would arise under the same experimental conditions if light is regarded as wave or particle. Therefore, the test can help us to comprehend which concept, wave or particle, is more essential for micro-particles.

Nonclassical and nonlocal effects in the interference of light

L. Mandeļ

Although we tend to think of optical interference as a classical wave phenomenon, recent experiments have revealed a number of effects that are not describable in classical terms. This is particularly true of interference effects involving the detection of a photon pair. We shall refer to them as fourth order interference, on the grounds that the joint probability density for the detection of one photon at r sub 1 at time t and another r sub 2 at time t is proportional to the fourth order correlation function of the field. This probability is readily measured when two photodetectors are positioned at r sub 1 and r sub 2 and the signals from the two detectors are fed to a coincidence counter that registers 'simultaneous' detections by the two detectors in coincidence. The topics covered include: fourth order interference measurements; the Franson experiment; and experimental test of the de Broglie guided wave theory.
