Abstract

There are lots of factors, such as the refractive index of dielectric, the number of periods, the thickness of defect layer, the width of spectrum line et al., have effects on the bistable threshold of nonlinear microcavity. However, the red shifting in cavity-mode plays a very important role. We theoretically analyse and numerically simulate the effects of red shifting on the bistable threshold. The red shifting should be first considered in studying bistable threshold.

Dynamic shift effect on bistability in nonlinear optical microcavities

Xu-Sheng Lin, Quan Shi, Xuhong Cai +2 more

The shift of optical cavity modes oscillates due to the time-varying refractive index under Kerr nonlinearity. To reveal its impact on bistability, we present a time-average approach that includes this dynamic shift characteristic in the expression of nonlinear transmission. It predicts the monotonous decrease of the maximum transmission with the increase of the frequency detuning. Also, the frequency detuning to start bistability should be corrected as about 2. Our analyses are supported by the simulations based on the finite-difference time-domain technique.

Optical bistability of a nonlinear microcavity

Meiping Jiang

Based on Fabry-Perot cavity's theories and efficiency refractive index, the optical bistability of a nonlinear microcavity is studied, and the corresponding mathematical formula are deduced. The theoretical curves are well fitted with those of numerical simulation in other papers. The investigation shows that appropriate frequency-shifting should be preset on the incident light in order to produce bistability for a nonlinear system. If the system is composed of focusing nonlinear medium, the frequency must be redshifted, otherwise it must be blue-shifted.The magnitude of critical shifting is 0.866 times of the width of microcavity resonance mode.

Bistability of Nonlinear Fabry-Perot Cavity

Song Jun

The bistability of vertical microcavity MQW structure is studied using transfer matrix method.Calculation results show that it is much easier to produce bistable states when the material with higher refractive index is in the vicinity of the nonlinear dielectric (i.e.MQW structure).Curves of the reflective phase and reflectivity varying with the incident optical power of nonlinear Fabry-Perot cavity are also calculated. The effect of the number of the DBR periods on the bistability is analyzed.

Analysis of bistable switching threshold in one-dimensional photonic crystals

Meiping Jiang, Xiaoming Shen, Xingfang Jiang +1 more

We study the optical bistable properties in one-dimensional photonic crystal with symmetric structure (AB)N(D)M(BA)N, where A is high refractive index medium, B is low refractive index medium, D is defect layer, N is the number of layer periods at the left and right of the defect layer. M determines the thickness of the defect layer with Kerr medium. First, we analyze mechanisms producing bistability by the structure consisted of a nonlinear layer sandwiched between Bragg reflectors. Then by using the transfer matrix method, we calculate numerically the threshold value of the bistability switching in one-dimensional photonic crystals with structure (AB)N(D)M(BA)N. The investigations show that the number of layer periods (N) and the thickness of the defect layer (M) influence the threshold value of the bistability switching. We confirm the parameter of the bistability switching to produce the lower threshold value.

Optical bistability of semiconductor microcavities in the strong-coupling regime

Alessandro Tredicucci, Yong Chen, Vittorio Pellegrini +2 more

We propose a mechanism for achieving optical bistability in semiconductor heterostructures. In contrast to the well-known refractive shift of the Fabry-Perot mode in macroscopic resonators, we consider the bleaching of the exciton Rabi splitting in strong-coupling microcavities and prove that this nonlinear process leads to an optically bistable behavior. Through a model based on the transfer-matrix formalism, we predict the dependence of this effect on specific material parameters and on the nature of the cavity. Numerical calculations are carried out for quantum well embedded cavities and the possibility of room-temperature bistable operation is also discussed. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

The defect mode and bistability in the nonlinear Bragg microcavity composed of one-dimension photonic crystal

It is studied the defect mode and bistability properties of a nonlinear medium sandwiched between Bragg reflectors composed of one-dimensional photonic crystal by numerical calculation and theoretical analysis. The influence of defect layer thickness and quasi-periodic Bragg reflectors on defect mode and bistability is discussed. It is revealed that the defect mode shift to lower frequency when the increasing thickness of defect layer or refractive index of Bragg reflectors.Hence microcavity resonant mode is superposition with incident wave mode at lower incident intensity, and produce the bistability with lower threshold. The numerical calculation results accord with theoretical analysis. It is significant for design of photonic crystal microcavity.
