Coherent Control of Two-photon Fluorescence in Rhodamine B

Abstract

With femtosecond laser spectral phase shaping technique and polarization modulation technique, the coherent control of two-photon fluorescence(TPF)in Rhodamine B solution is studied.By shaping the femtosecond pulse with simple phase patterns(cosinusoidal andπphase step-function shape),two-photon fluorescence intensity of Rhodamine B can be controlled effectively.Theoretical simulation and calculation show that the variation of twophoton fluorescence intensity for Rhodamine B solution is ascribed to the constructive and destructive interference of various quantum paths in two-photon transitions.TPF of Rhodamine B solution displays periodical change by polarization modulation.TPF decreases when the laser polarization changes from linear through elliptical to circular. These experimental results are theoretically confirmed to be caused by the variation of laser polarization.

Single and two-photon fluorescence control of Er3+ ions by phase-shaped femtosecond laser pulse

Shian Zhang, Shuwu Xu, Jingxin Ding +4 more

We experimentally demonstrate the control of the single and two-photon fluorescence (SPF and TPF) in Er3+ ions by shaping the femtosecond laser pulse with a π or square phase modulation. With the low laser intensity (8.4 × 1010 W/cm2), SPF keeps a constant while TPF is effectively suppressed by the two control schemes. With the high laser intensity (1.2 × 1013 W/cm2), both SPF and TPF are simultaneously enhanced or suppressed by the π phase modulation, and SPF is enhanced while TPF is effectively suppressed by the square phase modulation. The up/down-conversion fluorescence enhancement, suppression, or tuning by the optical control method can greatly expand its applications in various related fields.

Coherent control of non-resonant two-photon transition in molecular system

Hui Zhang, Shian Zhang, Zugeng Wang +1 more

In this paper, we study theoretically and experimentally the coherent control of non-resonant two-photon transition in a molecular system (Perylene dissolved in chloroform solution) by shaping the femtosecond pulses with simple phase patterns (cosinusoidal and π phase step-function shape). The control efficiency of the two-photon transition probability is correlated with both the laser field and the molecular absorption bandwidth. Our results demonstrate that, the two-photon transition probability in a molecular system can be reduced but not completely eliminated by manipulating the laser field, and the control efficiency is minimal when the molecular absorption bandwidth is larger than twice the laser spectral bandwidth.

A femtosecond laser pulse can be tailored to control the two-photon transitions using the ultra-fast pulse-shaping technique. This paper theoretically and experimentally demonstrates that two-photon transitions in molecular system with broad absorption line can be effectively controlled by square phase-modulation in frequency domain, and the influence of all parameters characterizing the square phase-modulation on two-photon transitions is systemically investigated and discussed. The obtained results have potential application in nonlinear spectroscopy and molecular physics.

Polarization and phase control of two-photon absorption in an isotropic molecular system

Chenhui Lu, Hui Zhang, Shian Zhang +1 more

We theoretically and experimentally study the polarization and phase control of two-photon absorption in an isotropic molecular system. We theoretically show that the two-photon transition probability decreases when the laser polarization changes from linear through elliptical to circular, and the laser polarization does not affect the control efficiency of two-photon transition probability by shaping the spectral phase. These theoretical results are experimentally confirmed in coumarin 480. Furthermore, we propose that the combination of the laser polarization with the spectral phase modulation can further increase the control efficiency of the two-photon absorption.

Polarization control of multi-photon absorption under intermediate femtosecond laser field

Wenjing Cheng, Pei Liu, Guo Liang +4 more

It has been shown that the femtosecond laser polarization modulation is a very simple and well-established method to control the multi-photon absorption process by the light–matter interaction. Previous studies mainly focused on the multi-photon absorption control in the weak field. In this paper, we further explore the polarization control behavior of multi-photon absorption process in the intermediate femtosecond laser field. In the weak femtosecond laser field, the second-order perturbation theory can well describe the non-resonant two-photon absorption process. However, the higher order nonlinear effect (e.g., four-photon absorption) can occur in the intermediate femtosecond laser field, and thus it is necessary to establish new theoretical model to describe the multi-photon absorption process, which includes the two-photon and four-photon transitions. Here, we construct a fourth-order perturbation theory to study the polarization control behavior of this multi-photon absorption under the intermediate femtosecond laser field excitation, and our theoretical results show that the two-photon and four-photon excitation pathways can induce a coherent interference, while the coherent interference is constructive or destructive that depends on the femtosecond laser center frequency. Moreover, the two-photon and four-photon transitions have the different polarization control efficiency, and the four-photon absorption can obtain the higher polarization control efficiency. Thus, the polarization control efficiency of the whole excitation process can be increased or decreased by properly designing the femtosecond laser field intensity and laser center frequency. These studies can provide a clear physical picture for understanding and controlling the multi-photon absorption process in the intermediate femtosecond laser field, and also can provide a theoretical guidance for the future experimental realization.
