Abstract

In this paper, according to the dynamic and steady state equations describing the magneto-optical bistable system with a delay in the feedback loop, some instability characteristics have been calculated and analysed. In particular, the effect of extinction ratio in the magneto-optical bistable system on the unstable region and the resonance have been investigated.

Modulation effect of a Bragg acousto-optic bistable system

In this paper, the linear stability and the modulation effect of a Bragg acousto-optio bistable system have been analysed. According to the dynamic and stationary equations describing the system, the boundary for instability has been calculated. When the input intensity undergoes a sinusoidal modulation, we predict the resonance and shift of resonance peak of the output intensity in the stable region and the appearance of frequency looking phenomena in the unstable region.

Instability Condition and Frequency-Locking in Hybrid Optical bistability

Lixue Chen, Chunfei Li, Jing Hong

In the linear instability analysis of the difference-differential equation which describes the dynamic behaviors of optical bistability with delayed feedback, introducing degree of stability S, which is defined as the ratio between relative variations of input and output intensities(1), we find that for long delay time instability condition is S≥2 and possible oscillation periods are approximately T ¯ = 2 T / ( 2 n + 1 ) but for short delay time the condition is S≥1 + πτ/2T and the periods are T ¯ = 4 T / ( 4 n + 1 ) . So the generation of instability for long delay time is easier than for short one, as shown in Fig.1.

Bistability and instability in passive and active optical systems with a general ring cavity model

Shufen Tian, Xijun Fan

In this paper, the general ring cavity model of passive and active optical systems is presented. In the mean field and the Gaussian one transverse mode approximations, the steady state and stability properties of the systems are analyzed for mixed absorptive and dispersive cases. It is found that when the transmissivity ratio M (equals T1/T2) varies, the bistable loop changes its size and even the systematic behavior varies from the bistability mode into the amplification mode, and the instability domain on the steady state curve varies obviously. The mode-pulling formula and bistable threshold with varying values of M are also discussed.

Stabilization of unstable stationary states in optical bistability

B. Macke, J. Zemmouri, N. E. Fettouhi

The use of a very simple technique of proportional feedback is proposed to stabilize an optical bistable system on the entire middle branch of its steady-state characteristic without otherwise altering the system. The conditions of stabilization are analyzed and the efficiency of the method is experimentally demonstrated.

Ikeda instability and degree of stability in optical bistability

Ong J

The degree of stability which describes intensity of feedback is introduced into the dynamic equations of optical bistability with delayed feedback. In addition to relative delay time, the degree of stability also affects the instability behaviors of the system, including threshold condition and oscillation modes of instability. The threshold condition of instability is (S≥2 for long delay and S≥1+π/2Q for short delay. The experiment by a hybrid OBD shows oscillation, bifurcation and chaos and verities theoretical analysis. The results show the close relation between Ikeda instability and stability in OBD. New basis to realize Ikeda instability in intrinsic OBD has been provided.

Absorption optical bistable scheme with additional lateral feedback

Vyacheslav A. Trofimov, Andrey Shobukhov, A. S. Makarik

We consider an optically bistable scheme based on growing absorption and equipped with an additional lateral feedback loop. Mathematical model of this device is proposed and analyzed. We demonstrate the simultaneous transfer to instability of steady states that belong to upper and lower branches of the bistable media characteristic curve. This stability loss may cause either self-switching of the scheme from one steady state to another or generation of autooscillations. The latter may be used for the formation of pulse sequences with given duration. We show that adding several loops instead of one sufficiently decreases the input intensity, necessary for switching. The role of diffusion processes in pulse formation is discussed, and the spatially non-uniformal stationary solutions are demonstrated.
