Abstract

The theory of spectral hole burning and recent developments of the technology are intruduced.According to the advances, three problems which are caused much attention and should be resolved before the technology being put into practice are: increasing the number of multiple spectral hole burning, hole burning at room temperature and spectral hole burning with high signal background ratio. To resolve all these problems, the most important point is light induced hole erasing.

Theory of One- and Two-Step Pulsed Spectral Hole Burning

Inna Rebane

A theory of spectral hole burning (SHB) by light pulses of an arbitrary shape and duration is proposed. One- and two-step (photon-gated) SHB processes induced by laser pulses in two-, three- and four-level systems are theoretically considered. It is shown that for two-step SHB there exists a possibility of obtaining spectral holes which are narrower than in the one-step SHB with monochromatic light. In case of one- and two-step SHB the dependence of the shape of the hole on the duration of the burning pulse is considered (on two-step SHB the second pulse is Δ-pulse).

Spectral Hole Stability and Laser Induced Hole-Filling in Zinc-Tetrabenzoporphurin/Aromatic Cyanide System

The importance of photon-gated persistent spectral hole burning for scientific studies and for frequency domain optical storage (FDOS) has stimulated much recent research to discover new photon-gated materials. For FDOS the practical materials should posses the characteristics of high hole formation efficiency, large multiplicity of spectral hole, good thermal and spectral stability etc.

Persistent Spectral Hole-Burning of Dye Molecules Adsorbed on Heterogeneous Surfaces

Christoph Bräuchle, Bernd Sauter, R. Kettner

In this talk we review our recent results on dye-surface systems investigated by persistent spectral hole-burning. Dye-surface systems are an interesting class of hole-burning materials. In most dye-surface systems investigated by us stable holes can be burnt and detected at unusual high temperatures [1,2,3]. In addition, the understanding of the interaction between adsorbed molecules and the heterogeneous surface may provide new insights in processes important in catalysis.

Multiple spectral hole burning at room temperature was realized for Nile blue molecules-doped spherical polymeric microparticles based on morphology-dependent resonances. Hole parameters, sidehole generation, dynamical process of hole formation and hole burning mechanism were studied.

Spectral Hole-Burning at Room Temperature in a Thin Film of SrFClxBr(1-x):Sm2+

One of the most attractive features of spectral hole-burning (SHB) is the possible its application to higher-density data storage media(1,2). Since the recent successes of SHB at room temperature in Sm2+-doped materials(3-6), the possibility of their practical use has become much larger. In that sense, inorganic materials containing Sm2+ are of interest to us(7).
