A Simple Experiment of Simulating Optical Flip-Flop Operator with Two Oscilloscopes and Photodiodes

Ching-Sheu Wang, Nei-Po Chen, Jow-Tsong Shy +1 more

A coupled hybrid optical bistable device composed of two oscilloscopes and two photodiode detectors has been constructed. This device is used to experimentally simulate the basic feature of the flip-flop operator proposed by Otsuka [Opt. Lett. 14 (1989) 72]. Most importantly, it allows us to model the system easily, and hence the condition of an occurrence of the flip-flop operation is accordingly predicted by the linear stability analysis. Furthermore, the influences of symmetry property of the optical system upon the flip-flop operation have been discussed as well.

Complementary Optical Bistable Operation with Integration of Two Directional Couplers on LiNbO3 Crystal

Ching-Ting Lee, How-Chiang Lee, Hsin-Hung Lai Hsin-Hung Lai +1 more

Integrated optical bistable circuits consisting of two parallel reversed-Δβ-directional couplers interconnected by single-mode waveguides were fabricated on a single LiNbO3 crystal. Superior performances of the complementary and consistent types of hysteresis curves are demonstrated theoretically and experimentally. Parallel optical signal processes of different logic gate combinations are obtained.

All-optical flip-flop operation in an optical bistable device using two lights of different frequencies

Kyo Inoue

All-optical flip-flop operation in a Fabry-Perot-type optical bistable device (OBD) is investigated. The OBD is switched both from OFF to ON and ON to OFF using two lights of different frequencies as trigger pulses. We present the theoretical calculation, obtained by applying a conventional expression for a dispersive OBD to the two-light input case, and the experimental observation, in which a semiconductor laser amplifier is used as a bistable device.

All-optical flip-flop operations in a coupled element bistable device

Kenju Otsuka

An optical bistable device composed of coupled nonlinear elements is proposed. This device features optical bistability without hysteresis. It is shown theoretically that a set-reset type (S-R) flip-flop operation can be easily achieved on an all-optical basis by utilising nonhysteretic bistable characteristics.

Optical bistability is investigated using a DFB laser diode connected with a SOA. Broadband operation and tunability of the domain of bistable responses is shown. The device can readily serve as an all-optical flip-flop.

We demonstrate all-optical flip-flop operation based on the bistability injection locked FP-LD. The proposed all-optical flip-flop consists of a slave FP-LD and a specially designed single mode FP-LD.
