Abstract

With the growth of length, randomLDPC (lowdensity parity check) codes need large memory to storage the matrixes and have high encoding complexity. In this paper, in order to solve the problems, the algebraic meth- ods based on finite geometry are researched. The parity check matrixes are constructed by the points and lines of fi- nite geometries. The technique of matrix decomposition is used to get irregular QC-LDPC codes with various rates and code lengths. These codes are quasi-cyclic codes and can be encoded with low complexity with a linear rela- tionship to code length. They also have Tanner graphs free of4-cycles. The simulation results indicate: in the con- dition of MSK modulation and AWGN channel, these codes have decoding performance gains about 0.05 to 0.15 dB when bit error rate is 10-6compared with random LDPC codes with similar parameters.

Construction of QC-LDPC Codes based on Cyclic Groups

Encoding of computer-generated random low-density parity-check(LDPC) codes can be rather complex.QC-LDPC codes have encoding advantage over random LDPC codes.Encoding of an QC-LDPC code can be implemented using shift-registers with linear complexity. The usual algorithm for the decoding of LDPC codes is the iterative sum-product algorithm(SPA),operating on a Tanner graph of the code.It is well known that cycle-free Tanner graph with SPA algorithm yeilds optimal decoding. The girth of the cycle -free Tanner graph is infinite. In this paper,we present an algebraic method for constructing binary QC-LDPC codes based on the rowcolumn constraint. The codes constructed by this method have girths at least 6.Experimental results show that the constructed LDPC codes decoded with SPA over the AWGN channel can perform as well as standard LDPC codes in terms of bit-error probability and block error probability.

Design and performance evaluation of low complexity encoding methods for LDPC codes

Ambar Bajpai, Lunchakorn Wuttisittikulkij, Piya Kovintavewat

There is an important breakthrough in the field of forward error correction techniques, low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. These codes have potential to approach the Shannon limit with reliable performance on a given channel, known as the channel capacity. Recently, researchers pay much more attention towards LDPC codes because its performance is better than Turbo codes. However, the LDPC code is the best when it is an irregular code and uses with a very large block-length. Although, the short block-length LDPC codes perform not so well, they are easy to implement in various practical applications. Therefore, there is still a demand of new development on the encoding side of LDPC codes for various ranges of code rate and code length so as to capable of using in many applications. This thesis proposes the development of quasi-cyclic (QC) LDPC codes for column weight 3. In the first part of this thesis, we propose a new construction algorithm of QC-LDPC codes for medium to large block-length by combining QC-LDPC codes of small block-length as their component codes, via Chinese remainder theorem (CRT). Such component codes were constructed by permuting each column block sequentially to attain the desire local girth. After combining all component codes to generate an expanded parity-check matrix, the resulting girth is greater than or at least equal to the maximum girth of the component codes. Simulation results show that our proposed construction method of the parity-check matrix significantly outperforms the other well-known existing methods in terms of low error-floor, simple structure, high performance, and can reduce encoding complexity. In addition, this thesis also proposes two new construction methods for QC-LDPC codes, namely a base matrix method and a subtraction based method. A base matrix based method is a simple, less computational complexity method for constructing the exponent matrix (3, K) of girth 8, 10 and 12 of QC-LDPC codes. Another method is a subtraction method, which has a similar exponent matrix as a base matrix method and has a girth at least 8. Results indicate that the LDPC codes constructed from these two methods have flexibility for arbitrary block-column length K and have a similar BER performance if compared to existing methods.

A Class of Quantum LDPC Codes Constructed From Finite Geometries

Salah A. Aly

Low-density parity check (LDPC) codes are a significant class of classical codes with many applications. Several good LDPC codes have been constructed using random, algebraic, and finite geometries approaches, with containing cycles of length at least six in their Tanner graphs. However, it is impossible to design a self-orthogonal parity check matrix of an LDPC code without introducing cycles of length four. In this paper, a new class of quantum LDPC codes based on lines and points of finite geometries is constructed. The parity check matrices of these codes are adapted to be self- orthogonal with containing only one cycle of length four in each pair of two rows. Also, the column and row weights, and bounds on the minimum distance of these codes are given. As a consequence, these codes can be encoded using shift-register encoding algorithms and can be decoded using iterative decoding algorithms over various quantum depolarizing channels.

A Family of Irregular LDPC Codes Based on Optical Orthogonal Codes

Wen Hong

Based on the optical orthogonal codes, a method for constructing irregular LDPC (low-density parity check) codes was presented. These LDPC codes are quasi-cyclic codes and can be encoded with low complexity with a linear relationship to code length. These codes have Tanner graphs free of 4-cycles. They perform well with the sum-product iterative decoding. Compared with random codes and regular LDPC codes based on the optical orthogonal codes with similar parameters, they have decoding performance gains respectively about 0.3 and 0.15 dB when bit error rate is 10~(-5).

Low-density parity-check codes based on finite geometries: a rediscovery and new results

Y. Kou, Shu Lin, M.P.C. Fossorier

This paper presents a geometric approach to the construction of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. Four classes of LDPC codes are constructed based on the lines and points of Euclidean and projective geometries over finite fields. Codes of these four classes have good minimum distances and their Tanner (1981) graphs have girth 6. Finite-geometry LDPC codes can be decoded in various ways, ranging from low to high decoding complexity and from reasonably good to very good performance. They perform very well with iterative decoding. Furthermore, they can be put in either cyclic or quasi-cyclic form. Consequently, their encoding can be achieved in linear time and implemented with simple feedback shift registers. This advantage is not shared by other LDPC codes in general and is important in practice. Finite-geometry LDPC codes can be extended and shortened in various ways to obtain other good LDPC codes. Several techniques of extension and shortening are presented. Long extended finite-geometry LDPC codes have been constructed and they achieve a performance only a few tenths of a decibel away from the Shannon theoretical limit with iterative decoding.

The Design of Structured Low-Density Parity-Check Codes With Large Girth

Jing Long

This paper, based on algebra and graph, proposes a method for constructing structured low-density parity-check(LDPC) codes. In this method, the authors design a connected graph with three kinds of special path to ensure that the Tanner graph of the parity check matrix mapped from the connected graph is without short cycles. The construction method results in two classes of(3,k)-regular quasi-cyclic LDPC codes with girth 8 and 12 respectively.Furthermore,by extending this construction method, two classes of LDPC codes with column weight 2,whose girths are respectively 16 and 24,can be obtained. The simulation studies show that these codes can achieve better performance than randomly constructed regular LDPC codes over AWGN channels with iterative decoding. At the BER of 10-5,the new proposed(3,6)-regular(4356,2205) QC-LDPC code performs 1.48dB from the Shannon limit. Moreover,it outperforms the random regular LDPC code of comparable parameters by 0.1dB.For the new proposed structured LDPC codes with column weight 2,they can achieve about 2dB coding gains with respect to the random regular LDPC codes with similar block lengths and code rates.
