MEAN FIELD THEORY OF CRITICAL PHENOMENA IN INCREASING ABSORPTION OPTICAL BISTABILITY

Abstract

It is demonstrated that the mean field (Landau) theory of critical phenomena (including the two kinds of critical point) and transitions can also be applied to the increasing absorption optical bistubility (IAOB), far from equilibrium. On the basis of analysing the dynamical fea Lures of the IAOB model proposed recently[9], the socalled quasi-thermodynamic potential is introduced. This potential, near the critical point (of the second kind), reflects not only the general properties of phase transitions in bistable systems, but also the specific characteristics of the IAOB.

PHASE TRANSITIONS AT CRITICAL POINTS IN OPTICAL BISTAB1LITY

Eng W

Critical phenomena in optical bistability (OB) are studied in some detail. Theoretical an-alyeses, mainly based on the steady solution of the thermodynamic Fokker-Plank equation for absorptive OB, show that the critical phenomena in OB also can be brought into the framework of Landau's theory of scond-order phase transitions, and the relations between different kinds of critical index numbers obey the scaling laws.

Second-order Phase Transition At The Critical Point Of Optical Bistability Due To Nonlinear Absorption

Critical phenomena in optical bistability (OB) are studied in details. QUAS1-THERMODYNAMIC MODEL OF THE DISSIPATIVE SYSTEMS AND ITS APPLICATION TO PHASE TRANSITIONS IN OPTICAL BISTABILITY

Fa Ou, 华南理工大学应用物理系,广州510641

Taking the optical system as a prototype, this paper demonstrates that a quasi-thermodynamic model for dissipative systems, satisfying the principle of detailed balance, may be developed, which is parallel to the traditional thermodynamics. The present systems are described by the generalized dynamical equation of nonlinear optical cavities, introduced in previous work of Ou Fa et al. In view of the quasi-thermodynamic model, the critical phenomena and phase transitions in optical bistability are discussed systematically and generally. By taking the advantage of Ginzburg-Landau's model, the fluctuations and correlations near the (second kind of) critical point of optical bistability are studied also. So the Landau's theory of phase transitions in equilibrium thermodynamics is generalized to the bistable dissipative systems far from equilibrium.

CRITICAL EXPONENTS AND CRITICAL SLOWING DOWN IN OPTICAL BISTABILITY — A PHENOMENOLOGICAL APPROACH

Pei-Hsi Tsao, Wei-Chih Liu

A phenomenological approach is adopted for investigating the critical behavior related to optical bistability (OB). This method is similar to Landau theory of critical phenomena and is applied to find the critical exponents and to analyze critical slowing down. It is shown in general that critical exponents for OB are classical ones and the relaxation time of critical slowing down varies with the external parameter p as (p − pc)−1/2 around the transition point p = pc.

Critical phenomena and phase transitions in optical bistability

Fa Ou

Critical phenomena in optical bistability (OB) are studied in detail. The theoretical analyses, mainly based on the steady-state solution of the ``thermodynamics'' Fokker-Planck equation [Fa Ou and Zixiong Qin, Opt. Commun. 65, 455 (1988)] for absorptive OB, show that the critical phenomena in OB also can be brought into the framework of Landau's theory for the second-order phase transition, and the critical exponents obey the scaling laws.
