Superconductor Digital Electronics Past, Present, and Future

T. Van Duzer

This paper presents the history of superconductor digital circuits starting from several years after the discovery of the Josephson junction in 1962. The first two decades were mainly devoted to developing voltage-state logic, which is similar to semiconductor logic. Research on circuits employing the manipulation of single magnetic flux quanta resulted in a form called RSFQ in the mid-1980s; this is the basis of superconductor logic systems of today. The more difficult problem of random access memory is reviewed. We analyze the present status of the field and outline the work that lies ahead to realize a successful superconductor digital technology.

The effect of quantum physics and superconducting logic on future computers

Hamed Abbaspour

Abstract. While human progress in the world of electronics, computers and computing is undeniable, new researches show that we can achieve greater speed and lower power consumption based on the principles of quantum physics. Changing from the digital world of today, which is based on CMOS transistors and the electric current, to quantum with no electric current and based on magnetic flux, is now in the middle of its way. Clearly any research in this area or even a comprehensive scientific attention is laudable from the experts’ viewpoint. This paper tries to show quantum computers more tangible by describing and analyzing some basic principles and explaining the entrance to this technology. In this article it is explained how the spintronics, superconductivity, and Josephson junction open the ways to the next generation of faster, more compact, and more energy-efficient computers in future; computers that bring about several hundred times the speed and negligible power consumption, along with the revolution of basic principles of electronics. We'll see how the spin transistors transfer data in lower speed and volume, using the electron spin direction to be high or low, or how the superconductivity, which is the key to the future supercomputers, solve the problem of supercomputers power consumption using technologies such as RSFQ.

Superconductor logic goes low-power

Rachel E. Courtland

Energy-efficient superconducting circuits could be key to future supercomputers - Transistor-based semiconductors have dominated the computing industry since its start. But a much more exotic, transistor-less option has long been lurking in the wings. Superconducting circuits, which boast resistance-less wires and ultrafast switches, can perform the tasks that silicon-based systems do in a fraction of the time.

Advancement of superconductor digital electronics

Akira Fujimaki

Advancement of superconductor digital electronics, especially Rapid Single Flux Quantum (RSFQ) logic circuit is described. Ultra short pulse of a voltage generated across a Josephson junction and release from charging/discharging process for signal transmission in RSFQ circuits enable us to reduce power consumption and gate delay. The power-delay products (PDPs) of RSFQ integrated circuits (ICs) are 4 or 5 orders of magnitude smaller than those of semiconductor ICs. The fabrication process technology and the related designing technology have been advanced, and RSFQ ICs have been applied to software-defined radio receivers, superconductor detector array systems, and supercomputers. Recently, several kinds of energy-efficient single flux quantum circuit have been proposed to obtain further advantage to semiconductor devices. The PDPs of these circuits become at least 1 order smaller than those of conventional RSFQ circuits.
