Abstract

We report here the measurement of the resonance spectrum of different highly\|excited states of Yb atom by means of multiphoton excitation in the applied electric field from near zero to 15000V/cm.The investigated resonance peaks are identified and the selection rules and the intensities of the transition lines are discussed. The evolutions of the lines in applied electric fields are observed and analyzed. The results show directly that transitions involving the excitation of the 4f\+\{14\} subshell play an important role in the spectral behaviour of highly\|excited states of Yb atom.

Understanding Inner-Shell Excitations in Molecules through Spectroscopy of the 4f Hole States of YbF

S. Popa, Sascha Schaller, André Fielicke +4 more

Molecules containing a lanthanide atom have sets of electronic states arising from excitation of an inner-shell electron. These states have received little attention but are thought to play an important role in laser cooling of such molecules and may be a useful resource for testing fundamental physics. We study a series of inner-shell excited states in YbF using resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization spectroscopy. We investigate the excited states of lowest energy, 8474, 9013, and 9090 cm−1 above the ground state, all corresponding to the configuration 4f136s2 F27/2 of the Yb+ ion. They are metastable, since they have no electric dipole allowed transitions to the ground state. We also characterize a state at 31 050 cm−1 that is easily excited from both the ground and metastable states, which makes it especially useful for this spectroscopic study. Finally, we study two states at 48 720 and 48 729 cm−1 , which are above the ionization limit and feature strong autoionizing resonances that prove useful for efficient detection of the molecules and for identifying the rotational quantum number of each line in the spectrum. We resolve the rotational structures of all these states and find that they can all be described by a very simple model based on Hund’s case (c). Our study provides information necessary for laser slowing and magneto-optical trapping of YbF, which is an important species for testing fundamental physics. We also consider whether the low-lying inner-shell states may themselves be useful as probes of the electron’s electric dipole moment or of varying fundamental constants, since they are long-lived states in a laser-coolable molecule featuring closely spaced levels of opposite parity. Multiphoton ionization of atoms

Nikolai B. Delone

The most important results of study of multiphoton ionization of atoms are reviewed. Discussions are presented of specific features of the process, theoretical methods of description of ionization of atoms in a strong light field, the basic principles of design of experiments in which intense laser radiation is used, results of investigation of direct and resonance processes of multiphoton ionization, and the mutual relation between multiphoton processes (multiphoton excitation and ionization) and various phenomena leading to perturbation of the spectrum of bound states of an electron in an atom under the influence of a strong light field.

Multiphoton Ionization of Potassium Atoms in Femtosecond Laser Fields

Wankai Li, Lei Yue, Xing Li +10 more

We study the multiphoton ionization of potassium atoms in 800 nm and 400 nm femtosecond laser fields. In the 800 nm laser field, the potassium atom absorbs three photons and emits one electron via one photon resonance with the 4p intermediate state with the help of the ac-Stark shift. The resonance feature is clearly shown as an Autler–Townes (AT) splitting and is mapped out in the electron kinetic energy spectrum. In a 400 nm laser field, although one photon resonance is possible with the 5p state, no splitting is observed. The different transition amplitudes between 4s–4p and 4s–5p explain the observed results. Due to the AT effect, an unexpected peak in the photoelectron energy spectrum that violates the dipole transition rule is observed. A preliminary explanation involving the spin-orbit interaction in the p state is given to account for this component. The observed AT-splitting in the electron kinetic energy distribution can be used as an effective method to calibrate the intensity of a laser field.

Multiphoton ionization of Na and K in a modest electric field

Y. Teraoka, Yuuki Sato, J. Murakami

Multiphoton ionization (MPI) via two-photon resonance with high-lying Rydberg levels is observed on Na and K atoms in modest (12--120 V/cm) dc electric fields. The field-induced MPI signals are manifested to such an extent that the nominally forbidden MPI via two-photon resonance with the np levels is induced at the same signal levels as or more intensely than the allowed MPI via the ns and nd Rydberg levels. The intensity inversion between the allowed and the forbidden MPI signals is observed on the K atoms in the wavelength region where the two-photon energy is very close to the field-ionization limit.
