Abstract

An experimental system which could adjust the velocity of light continuously was proposed.Using LabVIEW and FPGA,signal generator could modulate light signal, and the signal passing through Erbium-doped fiber could be collected by DAQ,then transferred to PC and processed by LabVIEW.The system could simplify the data analysis process, achieve human-computer interaction and facilitate real-time monitoring.

Signal Evolution of Slow and Fast Light in Erbium Doped Fiber

Hao Wang, Chunguang Zhang

Recently, researches about the controllable group velocity of light propagation had made many progresses. And several experiments had demonstrated the signal evolution of slow and fast light. In this letter, the authors described a simple experiment for the tracing of light signals in an erbium-doped optical fiber at the optical communication wavelength firstly. We have, directly, observed the evolution of slow and fast signals with different waveforms that travel in an erbium-doped fiber amplifier. Through tracing the signal evolution, when slow light (Vg<;<;c) or fast light (Vg<;0) was got in it, we concluded that asymmetrical absorption and amplification on the periodical signal could account for the generation of slow and fast light in an erbium-doped fiber amplifier easily.

We present a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) based device that simultaneously generates two arbitrary analog voltage signals with the maximum sample rate of 1.25 MHz and acquires two analog voltage signals with the maximum sample rate of 2.5 MHz. All signals are synchronized with internal FPGA clock. The personal computer application developed for controlling and communicating with FPGA chip provides the shaping of the output signals by mathematical expressions and real-time monitoring of the input signals. The main advantages of FPGA based digital-to-analog and analog-to-digital cards are high speed, rapid reconfigurability, friendly user interface, and low cost. We use this module in slow light and storage of light experiments performed in Rb buffer gas cell.

We investigated the variations of group velocity slowdown in high doped erbium fibers. From the model the group velocity slowdown is controlled obviously by changing erbium ion population of ground state. To validate the effect of ion population for slow light, we did experimental measurement using high-doped erbium fibers.

Tunable Group Velocity of Light Propagation and Its Application

In this paper, we proposed a novel approach to demonstrate optically controllable pulse group velocity at telecommunication wavelengths in EDF due to CPO. First we reviewed recent advances in slow-light-based optical signal processing, then we study slow and fast light propagation in erbium doped fiber abstractly based on theory and simulation model. It is revealed though the research that the time delay and advancement depends greatly on the pump power, influence of the ion density on the group velocity of light propagation is also studied. Based on our discussion, the optimization parameters should be selected in order to obtain more appropriate time delay and the slowdown of group velocity, which is of great importance to the communication industry.
