Abstract

Based on the instability criterion of semi-classical Maxwell -Bloch equations of single-mode optical systems, the global distribution of instability region is depicted in △-θ parameter space (△ detuning of the atoms, θ mistuning of the cavity). In the instability region predicted, various bifurcations and chaos are disclosed. We find that chaos may appear in both upper and lower branches of one bistable curve Moreover, a new time-dependent solution coexisting with the stable stationary solution is found.

BIFURCATIONS TO CHAOS IN OPTICAL BISTABILITY

F. A. Hopf

Recent predictions by Ikeda show novel instabilities in optically bistable devices which can give chaotic behavior. Experiments confirming this prediction are presented. A discussion of the nature of chaos and the rationale for its study is also given.

Off-resonant-mode instabilities in mixed absorptive and dispersive optical bistability

M. L. Asquini, L. A. Lugiato, H. J. Carmichael +1 more

We analyze instabilities in mixed absorptive and dispersive optical bistability in the rate-equation approximation and the mean-field and good-cavity limits. Our starting point is a set of multimode equations derived from the Maxwell-Bloch equations for ring-cavity boundary conditions. We obtain analytic expressions for the instability conditions. In a plane-wave analysis, we find that a portion of the lower transmission branch can be unstable in addition to the upper-branch instability found in purely absorptive bistability. Also, a new disconnected region of instability can exist on the upper branch. Our analysis becomes particularly simple for equal and opposite cavity detunings and we explore this case in detail. We extend our treatment to include a Gaussian transverse intensity profile and show that the instabilities remain in the presence of Gaussian averaging. We also show that many of the results obtained in the rate-equation approximation hold when the atomic linewidth and atomic decay rate are of the same order.

Codimension-two bifurcations in single-mode optical bistable systems

Guang Hu, Cun-Zheng Ning, Hermann Haken

The codimension-two bifurcation set of single-mode optical bistable systems is investigated. The entire set is classified into three classes, a cusp bifurcation set, a degenerate Hopf bifurcation set, and the intersection of a Hopf bifurcation and a saddle-node bifurcation. Based on the specification of degenerate Hopf bifurcation, super- and subcritical Hopf bifurcations can be identified. It is found that, in the subcritical Hopf bifurcation region, an attractor of time-dependent motion may coexist with the stable stationary solution when the cavity is filled by a passive medium. Moreover, the coexistence of three attractors is observed for certain parameter combinations.

Distribution of subcritical Hopf bifurcations and regular and chaotic attractors in optical bistable systems

Guang Hu, Cun‐Zheng Ning, Hermann Haken

The distributions, in parameter space, of subcritical Hopf bifurcations and the various attractors of time-dependent motions of optical bistable systems are investigated systematically. The main emphasis is placed on the influence of the variations of the control parameters on the distributions. We have observed the tristability of large-amplitude regular or chaotic motions, periodic pulsations, and the stationary state for the parameters where no instability of the stationary solution exists at all over the complete range of the external field. The problem of how to find the various attractors and how to reveal chaotic motions by adjusting the control parameters is discussed according to the numerical results.

Instability in injected-laser and optical-bistable systems

Guang Hu, Guojian Yang

An analytical function is derived which can serve as a criterion of the instability boundary of both optical-bistable (OB) systems and laser systems with an injected coherent signal (LIS). By means of the criterion, we analyze, in various asymptotic limits, the instability regions of OB and LIS in the parameter space. In both good- and bad-cavity conditions of LIS a full hysteresis loop between coexisting stable states is observed for the first time.

THE GENERALIZED DYNAMICAL EQUATION OF OPTICAL BISTABILITY AND LASER AND ITS STABILITY ANALYSIS

Yunfeng Ai

A single-mode dynamical equation is obtained from the Maxwell equation with the slowly varying amplitude approximation and the boundary conditions of the cavity, here the mean field limir and the good quality cavity case have been used. This equation is useful in describing the dynamical behavior of intrinsic optical bistable systems and/or lasers with injected sig-nals for any kinds of materials including two-level atoms. Furthermore, according to the li--near stability analysis, a generalized instability criterion is derived.
