Considering double-slit interference as an optical wave passing a through double-slit hard aperture, the intensity expression of Young's double-slit interference is derived based on Collins diffraction integral. The intensity distribution of Young's double-slit interference is graphically demonstrated. The interference fringes will be changes by adjusting the parameter of slit width, double-slit separation, incident wavelength, etc. Meanwhile, the causes for the different brightness at bright fringe center in Young's double-slit interference are discussed. Additionally, the interference fringe width is calculated. The result agrees well with optical interference theory. As an expanding teach method, it will be helpful to understand the double-slit interference characteristics.
tudying from the Huygens-Fresnel's principle, this research first obtains the formula about the light intensity distribution of double-slit interference through the theoretical calculation. Then it simulate the light intensity distribution on the receive screen with the help of Fortran powerstation 4. 0 and Origin 6. 0 Professional software. Lastly,an analysis and discussion is carried out on the impact of the slit width, the distance between the two slits, the light wave length and the distance of receive screen to slit on double-slit interference.
The double slit experiment was first conceived of by the English physician-physicist Thomas Young in 1801. It was the first demonstrative proof that light possesses a wave nature. In this experiment, light is made to pass through two very narrow slits that are spaced closely apart and a screen placed on the other side captures a pattern of alternating bright and dark stripes called fringes, formed as a result of the interference of ripples of light emanating from either slit. The relative positions and intensities of the fringes on the screen can be calculated by employing two assumptions that help simplify the geometry of the slit-screen arrangement. Firstly, the screen to slit distance is taken to be larger than the inter-slit distance (far field limit) and secondly, the inter-slit distance is taken to be larger than the wavelength of light. This conventional approach can account for the positions and intensities of the fringes located in the central portion of the screen with a fair degree of precision. It however, fails to account for those fringes located in the peripheral portions of the screen and also, is not applicable to the case wherein the screen to slit distance is made comparable to the inter-slit distance (near field limit). In this paper, the original analysis of Young’s Experiment is reformulated using an analytically derived hyperbola equation, which is formed from the locus of the points of intersections of two uniformly expanding circular wavefronts of light that emanate from either slit source. Additionally, the shape of the screen used to capture the interference pattern is varied (linear, semicircular, semielliptical) and the relative positions of the fringes is calculated for each case. This new approach bears the distinctive advantage that it is applicable in both the far field and the near field scenarios, and since no assumptions are made beyond the Huygens-Fresnel principle, it is therefore, a much more generalized approach. For these reasons, the author suggests that the new analysis ought to be introduced into the Wave Optics chapter of the undergraduate Physics curriculum.
Young's experiment plays an important role in Physics, which contains interference, diffraction, modulation and quantum superposition, and not only shows the significance and charm of the wave theory of the light but also demonstrates the profound significance of the quantum theory. For that from several levels of the sub-wave-front two-beam interference,double-slit diffraction,double-slit filter and double-slit quantum superposition,on the initial theory of Young's experiment is discussed in favor of optical theory and technology development.
In this paper, the light double-slit diffraction with quantum theory approach is studied.Firstly, the light wave function in slits is calculated, and the diffraction wave function is obtained with Kirchhoff’s law.The diffraction intensity is proportional to the diffraction wave function da party.Futhermore, the intensity formula of light double-slit diffraction is obtained;by comparing the quantum theory calculation results and classical electromagnetic theory calculation results and the experimental date,it is found that the calculate result of quantum theory is in accordance with the experment data, but the classical electromagnetic theory calculation result with the experiment date has certain deviation. So,the quantum theory can explain the light diffraction more precisely. The proposed method can also further study the light of the single slit, many slits and grating diffraction experiment phenomena.
Young’s double slit experiment revived the wave theory of the light. The standard interpretation is that the light behaves as waves before and after passing through the diaphragm of the double slit. Feynman called the double slit experiment the only mystery in quantum mechanics. Recently, the photon chamber has been proposed and utilized to study the behavior of photons near the detecting screen. The experiments show that the light, near the screen, behaves as photons propagating along the straight-line trajectories, and the trajectories distribute as waves. Furthermore, the photon chamber experiments show that, withing a macroscopic distance from the double slit, the pattern is non-interference, which indicates that the standard double slit experiments violate the standard wave interpretations in the area near the diaphragm. In this article, we utilize two new methods to study how the non-interference pattern (near the double slit) evolving to the interference pattern (far from it). The experiments show, the first time, that (1) the shape of the pattern are distance-dependent, when the distance increases, the non-interference pattern evolves to the interference pattern, which indicates that the non-wave nature and the wave distribution coexist in the same wave experiment; (2) the light beams behave as photons near the double slit. The experiments: (1) provide novel phenomena/data for further theoretical development of the established optics and for understanding the nature of the light; (2) show the Feynman’s mystery in the different perspectives; (3) provide three methods that show the non-wave pattern in standard wave experiments and can be utilized to develop the classical optics further.
