Power Effect of the Collision Transfer Rates for High ExcitedStates Populated by Energy Pooling Collision BetweenTwo Excited Atoms in Sodium Vapor

Abstract

This paper reports the experimental observation of the higher states' fluorescence changing with laser power, which was populated through energy polling collisions between two excited sodium atoms excited to the first excited state by a CW single mode laser in sodium vapor. A proposed collision transfer mechanism combining with the rate equations of an approximate two levels system well explained the experimental result. The association of theory analysis with experiment data obtained the changing character of the different collision transfer rates k 4D ,k 5P ,k 4P ,k 5S corresponding to the higher excited states following laser power variation.

EXCITATION ENERGY TRANSFER BY COLLISIONS BETWEEN EXCITED RUBIDIUM ATOMS

Jin Wang, Zhengfa Hu, Deng-Yu Zhang +2 more

This paper reports the experimental observation of the excitation energy transfer to higher states by collisions between two rubidium atoms excited to a specific state by a CW single mode laser. An obvious competition has been observed between the channel of transition to the ground state by spontaneous emission, and that to higher excited states by collisions of two excited atoms. Formation rates of the high excited states with different laser power, atomic vapor temperature and laser detuning have been measured. A proposed mechanism well explained the experimental result.

Cross sections for the excitation energy transfer induced by collisions with He, Ar and Na atoms

Vlasta Horvatić, Mladen Movre, Cedomil Vadla

The cross sections for the excitation energy transfer induced by collisions with He, Ar and Na ground-state atoms have been measured. The sodium atoms in the 4D state have been produced by two-photon excitation using cw laser radiation at 578.89 nm. Within a model which takes into account collisional population and depopulation of the 4F level as well as radiative relaxation (direct or cascade) of the 3D, 4P, 4D and 4F states ending in the 3P level, the rate for the collisional transfer turns out to be related to the ratio of the steady-state populations created in 3D and 4D states. They have been determined by measuring the fluorescence intensities of the and transitions. The measurements yield the following cross section values for those processes investigated: , and , at .

Collisional processes in sodium vapour optically excited to the 3P state: asymptotic calculations

Pawel Kowalczyk

Studies two mechanisms for the non-resonant population of the sodium 4D state when sodium vapour is optically excited to the 3P state. They are the energy-pooling collision of two 3P-excited atoms and the radiative collision involving a laser photon. Both processes are considered in the region of large interatomic distances. Results are compared with experimental data.

Energy transfer in collisions between two Cs(5D) atoms

Yifan Shen

Using stepwise excitation of the cesium 8S atoms level in Cs vapor, several collisional and radiative processes have been identified from the intensities and spectra of the Cs fluorescence. The 5D state was populated by 8S→7P→5D transitions. In cesium densities 1016-1017?cm-3,the energy pooling collisions 5D+5D→nL+6S(nL=9D,11S,7F are studied.Since the 5D→6P(3.0-3.6 μm) fluorescence could not be detected with this experiment, the EP rate coefficients have been measured relative to the known rate coefficient of the collision,i.e.,6P+5D→6S+7D.The excited-atom density and spatial distribution were mapped by monitoring the absorption of a counterpropagating single-mode laser beam, tuned to 6P3/2→8S1/2 transition, which could be translated parallel to the pump beam. The excited atom densities are combined with measured fluorescene ratios to determine cross sections for the cesium energy pooling process. The average values(in units of 10-10?cm3s-1) for nL=9D,11S and 7F are 8.4±4.2,7.3±3.6,and 9.7±4.8,respectively.Influence on k11S and k7F of the energy transfer process 11S+6S7F+6S is also dicussed.

Rb(5P_J)+(Ne, N_2) collisional energy transfer

Qing Wang

The collisional energy transfer in Rb(5P_J)+M collisions, where M=Ne,N_2 under gas cell conditions was investigated. For collision with Ne only electronic to translational energy transfer is possible. However,in the N_2 case, electronics to vibrational or rotational transfer is important. The Rb(5P_(3/2))state is excited by a tunable CW diode laser, where the laser is tuned slightly off resonance. The ratio of 5P_(1/2)→5S_(1/2)to the 5P_(3/2)→5S_(1/2) fluorescence as a function of quenching gas pressure was measured.Using a two-state rate equation model the transfer rate coefficients from the Rb(5P_J)state was obtained. The rate coefficient for 5P_(3/2)→5P_(1/2) transfer in collision with Ne is 1.53×10~(-12)cm~3s~(-1).Using the ratio of the 5P_(1/2) to 5P_(3/2) fluorescence for Ne and N_2 case, and fitting the experimental results to the rate equation analysis,we estimate that the rate coefficient for 5P_(3/2)→5P_(1/2) transfer in collision with N_2 is 8.83×10~(-11) cm~3s~(-1).The quenching rate coefficient of the 5P_J state is 1.25×10~(-10) cm~3s~(-1).A qualitative explanation for the results was given.
