Abstract

By using the Euler–MacLaurin formula, this paper studies the thermodynamic properties of an ideal Fermi gas confined in a D -dimensional rectangular container. The general expressions of the thermodynamic quantities with the finite-size corrections are given explicitly and the effects of the size and shape of the container on the properties of the system are discussed. It is shown that the corrections of the thermodynamic quantities due to the finite-size effects are significant to be considered for the case of strong degeneracy but negligible for the case of weak degeneracy or non-degeneracy. It is important to find that some familiar conclusions under the thermodynamic limit are no longer valid for the finite-size systems and there are some novel characteristics resulting from the finite-size effects, such as the nonextensivity of the system, the anisotropy of the pressure, and so on.

Finite-size effects in the ideal Fermi gas

V. Subrahmanyam, Mustansir Barma

The ideal Fermi gas in a finite volume is studied in the low-temperature regime where the thermal correlation length is comparable to the size L of the system. Physical quantities such as the density of fermions and the appropriate ordering susceptibility show oscillatory fluctuations around a smooth background as L is varied. These are investigated numerically and analytically. The amplitude of the fluctuations depends on the observable in question and on the container shape. Finite-size scaling does not hold directly for thermodynamic quantities but is recoverable by averaging the mean-squared fluctuations over an appropriate range in L.

Interacting quantum gases in confined space: Two- and three-dimensional equations of state

Wu-Sheng Dai, Mi Xie

In this paper, we calculate the equations of state and the thermodynamic quantities for two- and three-dimensional hard-sphere Bose and Fermi gases in finite-size containers. The approach we used to deal with interacting gases is to convert the effect of interparticle hard-sphere interaction to a kind of boundary effect, and then the problem of a confined hard-sphere quantum gas is converted to the problem of a confined ideal quantum gas with a complex boundary. For this purpose, we first develop an approach for calculating the boundary effect on d-dimensional ideal quantum gases and then calculate the equation of state for confined quantum hard-sphere gases. The thermodynamic quantities and their low-temperature and high-density expansions are also given. In higher-order contributions, there are cross terms involving both the influences of the boundary and of the interparticle interaction. We compare the effect of the boundary and the effect of the interparticle interaction. Our result shows that, at low temperatures and high densities, the ratios of the effect of the boundary to the effect of the interparticle interaction in two dimensions are essentially different to those in three dimensions: in two dimensions, the ratios for Bose systems and for Fermi systems are the same and are independent of temperatures, while in three dimensions, the ratio for Bose systems depends on temperatures, but the ratio for Fermi systems is independent of temperatures. Moreover, for three-dimensional Fermi cases, compared with the contributions from the boundary, the contributions from the interparticle interaction to entropies and specific heats are negligible.

Thermodynamics of the Fermi Gas in a Quantum Well

Yu. M. Poluéktov, A. A. Soroka

For the ideal Fermi gas that fills a quantum well confined by two parallel planes, there are calculated the thermodynamic characteristics in general form for arbitrary temperatures, namely: the thermodynamic potential, energy, entropy, equations of state, heat capacities and compressibilities. The distance between planes is considered as an additional thermodynamic variable. Owing to the anisotropy, the pressure of the Fermi gas along and transverse to the planes is different, so that the system is characterized by two equations of state and a set of different heat capacities. Limiting cases of low and high temperatures are considered. The temperature dependencies of the entropy and heat capacities at low temperatures remain linear, just as in the volume case, and their dependencies on the chemical potential and density undergo jumps at the beginning of the filling of new discrete levels. It is shown that the behavior of thermodynamic quantities with the distance between plates can be either oscillating or monotonic, depending on what quantity is assumed to be fixed: the volume or surface density. For high temperatures the corrections to thermodynamic quantities are obtained, which are proportional to the ratio of the thermal de Broglie wavelength to the distance between planes.

Finite-size analysis of the Fermi liquid properties of the homogeneous electron gas

Markus Holzmann, B. Bernu, David M. Ceperley

We analyze the extrapolation to the thermodynamic limit of Fermi liquid properties of the homogeneous electron gas in two and three dimensions. Using field theory, we explicitly calculate finite-size effects of the total energy, the renormalization factor, and the effective mass at the Fermi surface within the random phase approximation (RPA) and discuss the validity for general metallic systems.

Finite Size Corrections for One Dimensional Interacting Fermions

Liu Yimin, Pu Fuque, Su Hang

Using the method based on the Euler-Maclaurin formula, we calculate the finite size correction to the energy of the ground state and the excited state for the delta interacting fermion gas in the periodic boundary condition with N - 1 of the N fermions having the same spin and one having the opposite spin. In the thermodynamic limit, we obtain the conformal anomaly, operator dimension and the correlation functions.
