Abstract

Recently, many important results on quantum secure communication, especially on quantum key distribution(QKD),have been achieved. QKD,being physically secure in theory, however,is not so easy in realizing an ideal QKD system. How to evaluate the security of QKD system in practice? Can free space QKD network provide secure communication under information war? Can QKD protect information security against quantum computer attack? Studies on all these problems both in theory and practice undoubtedly play an important role in practice.

The Opportunity and Challenge On Quantum Key Distribution

Chen Hu

In last decade, many important results on quantum key distribution( QKD) have been achieved. QKD is physically secure in theory, however,it is not easy to realize an ideal QKD system in practice. On the one hand, side channel attack on QKD system will be a main threat which cannot be eliminated in the predictable future. On the other hand,QKD system does not have a full compatibility with conventional network because quantum signal is transmitted by fiber or free-space in point to point mode. Besides, the security of identification and data storage still cannot be solved by QKD. However,an integrated system on how to evaluate the security of QKD systemstill will play an important role in practical QKD system. Especially, new cryptography system is still the key factor toward the bright future of information security.

Attacks on practical quantum key distribution systems (and how to prevent them)

Jain, N., Birgit Stiller, Khan, I. +3 more

With the emergence of an information society, the idea of protecting sensitive data is steadily gaining importance. Conventional encryption methods may not be sufficient to guarantee data protection in the future. Quantum key distribution (QKD) is an emerging technology that exploits fundamental physical properties to guarantee perfect security in theory. However, it is not easy to ensure in practice that the implementations of QKD systems are exactly in line with the theoretical specifications. Such theory-practice deviations can open loopholes and compromise security. Several such loopholes have been discovered and investigated in the last decade. These activities have motivated the proposal and implementation of appropriate countermeasures, thereby preventing future attacks and enhancing the practical security of QKD. This article introduces the so-called field of quantum hacking by summarising a variety of attacks and their prevention mechanisms.

Quantum cryptography assessing the security and practicality of quantum key distribution in modern communication networks

Abha Kiran Rajpoot, Dharmesh Dhabliya, V. N. Trupti +3 more

The increasing number of cyber threats and the approaching development of quantum computing demand a critical review of existing cryptographic approaches. The goal of this work is to evaluate the security and practicality of utilizing Quantum Key Distribution for secure communications. QKD utilizes the laws of quantum mechanics to provide a secure and unbreakable method for exchanging information. Protocols like BB84 are resistant to threatening attacks from both classical and quantum adversaries. The methodology utilizes simulated models and quantum communication toolkits to study critical characteristics such as key generation speed, QBER, latency and scalability. Performance of QKD is compared to that of classical schemes such as RSA-2048, ECC-256 and AES-256. Results reveal that although QKD provides unparalleled theoretical security, its deployment has notable obstacles such as intricate infrastructure, restrictions on distance and elevated latency. Our study reveals that optimizing the interplay between security and practicality in QKD deployment can yield a highly effective safeguard for next-generation communication networks.

Application and Development of QKD-Based Quantum Secure Communication

Junsen Lai, Fei Yao, Jing Wang +4 more

Quantum key distribution (QKD) protocols have unique advantages of enabling symmetric key sharing with information-theoretic security (ITS) between remote locations, which ensure the long-term security even in the era of quantum computation. QKD-based quantum secure communication (QSC) enhancing the security of key generation and update rate of keys, which could be integrated with a variety of cryptographic applications and communication protocols, has become one of the important solutions to improve information security. In recent years, the research on QKD has been active and productive, the performance of novel protocol systems has been improved significantly, and the feasibility of satellite-based QKD has been experimentally verified. QKD network construction, application exploration, and standardization have been carried out in China as well as other countries and regions around the world. Although QKD-based QSC applications and industrialization are still in the initial stage, the research and exploration momentum is positive and more achievements could be expected in the future.

A Comprehensive Study on Quantum Key Distribution Protocols

Swathi Mummadi, Sabiha Fathima

Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) represents a revolutionary mechanism ensuring secure communication amidst the quantum computing era. With the evolving threat landscape due to quantum computing advancements, there’s an urgent need for a comprehensive review and assessment of existing QKD protocols and implementations. This paper systematically explores the QKD landscape, focusing on protocols, security models, practical implementations, and recent progress. We commence by elucidating the foundational principles of QKD and its pivotal role in establishing verifiably secure communication channels. Based on their underlying principles, we then categorize and scrutinize various QKD protocols, like BB84, BBM92, CV-QKD, etc. We delve into the security models utilized in QKD protocols, evaluating their strengths and limitations. Additionally, we evaluate practical QKD system implementations encompassing both fibre-based and free-space setups. We shed light on crucial technological challenges, advancements, and recent developments in quantum repeaters, memories, and network architectures aiming to enhance the reach and scalability of QKD systems. This systematic review provides insights into the current state of QKD technology, identifies research gaps, and discusses potential pathways for future progress. Our analysis is a vital resource for researchers and practitioners who are engaged in quantum cryptography and secure communication protocols.
