Abstract

The optical bistability and multistability in Er3+-doped fiber is studied, and the mechanism of optical bistability and multistability qualitatively is analysed. The system specification of Er3+-doped fiber is measured and fitted by a formula derived form the qualitative explanation.By changing the rabbi frequency and coupling of the coherent field, the bistability and multistability of the system can be controlled effectively.

Optical fiber grating bistability

Yuancheng Zhang, Qian Song

It is proposed that a segment of Er-doped fiber with a couple of fiber gratings on the ends may be used as a novel optical bistability device with low power and high speed. Operation and bistability threshold of device are analysed in accordance with the distributed feedback couple-mode theory and the nonlinear characteristic of Er-doped fiber. It is shown that a nanoseconds microwatts bistable operation of a centimeter device is realizable under nowaday technological condition.

Optical Bistability of the Negative Nonlinear Absorption Effect in Erbium-Doped Fibers Using a 1.5 µm Laser Diode

Yoshinobu Maeda

Optical bistability derived from the negative nonlinear absorption effect was investigated in 470 ppm erbium-doped fibers using a 1.5 µm laser diode. Optical bistability was observed in a laser intensity range of 0.3 W/cm2 to 2.5 kW/cm2 at a fiber length of 6 m. The transmitted laser intensity (I out), propagating through the fiber, decreased exponentially in accordance with the well-known exponential law. However, the amplitude of the optical bistability (ΔI out) increased logarithmically as the fiber length was increased. It was clarified that ΔI out was proportional to the product of exp (-L) and log (L) as a function of the fiber length (L). The optical bistability can be explained by considering an enhanced absorption model for a four-level system of the Er3+ ion.

Coherent Control of Optical Bi-Stable and Multi-Stable Yb~(+3)-Doped Fiber

Wang An-fu

The two-photon-driven can be used to build up the atomic coherence since the Yb+3 has the simple two-level structure.Atomic transitions can take place in many Stark sublevels because of the characteristics of its energy level with up-and-down multi-state structure. The coherent overlap of these atomic transitions can determine the nonlinear absorption and dispersion in the medium and the results of the coherent overlap depend on the Rabbi frequency of driving field. The results show that by changing the Rabbi frequency of driving field,we can effectively control the existence of bi-stable or multi-stable system and threshold level of intensity.

Optical bistability and multistability in polaritonic materials doped with nanoparticles

Zhiping Wang, Benli Yu

We investigate the optical bistability and multistability in polaritonic materials doped with nanoparticles inside an optical ring cavity. It is found that the optical bistability and multistability can be easily controlled by adjusting the corresponding parameters of the system properly. The effect of the dipole–dipole interaction has also been included in the formulation, which leads to interesting phenomena. Our scheme opens up the possibility of controling the optical bistability and multistability in polaritonic materials doped with nanoparticles.
