By using the properties of the unitary displacement operator and the completeness of the number states describing optical fields, this paper gives the proof of the completeness of the coherent states describing optical fields
Abstract This chapter considers methods for describing the quantum statistics of a single mode of the electromagnetic field. Some of these methods may be extended to multimode fields, and this is discussed in the last section of the chapter. The moment generating function is developed for studying the photon number statistics of a single field mode. The quantum properties of optical phase are described using the optical phase operator. The characteristic functions and quasi-probability distributions provide a complete statistical description of the field. These rely on the properties the coherent states and the Glauber displacement operator.
Displaced Fock states of the electromagnetic field have been synthesized by overlapping the pulsed optical single-photon Fock state ∣1〉 with coherent states on a high-reflection beam splitter and completely characterized by means of quantum homodyne tomography. The reconstruction reveals nonclassical properties of displaced Fock states, such as negativity of the Wigner function and photon number oscillations. To our knowledge, this is the first time complete tomographic reconstruction has been performed on a highly nonclassical optical state.
The mathematical methods that have been used to analyze the statistical properties of boson fields, and in particular the coherence of photons in quantum optics, have their counterparts for Fermi fields. The coherent states, the displacement operators, the P representation, and the other operator expansions all possess surprisingly close fermionic analogues. These methods for describing the statistical properties of fermions are based upon a practical calculus of anticommuting variables. They are used to calculate correlation functions and counting distributions for general systems of fermions.
