Abstract

In today's information era, computer has become an important tool in man's life and work. The continuous development of science and technology make the requirements for computer higher and higher. However, the shortcomings and disadvantages of electronics computer limit its further development. And electronics computer based on optical bistability devices, making use of the fundamental characteristics of light, without the shortcomings and disadvantages of electronics computer, has the excellent performance that electronic computer can't surpass. In recent decades, with the rapid nonlinear optical development,a major breakthrough in research of optical bistability makes the research and production of optical computer possible.

Advances in optical bistability: Theory, devices, and emerging applications

Julien Moussa H. Barakat, Abdullah S. Karar, Raymond Ghandour +1 more

The nonlinear phenomenon known as optical bistability, which enables optical systems to maintain two stable output states for a single input, is thoroughly examined in this review article. Through a detailed analysis of two important devices—the Simple Fiber Ring (SFR) resonator and the Nonlinear Optical Loop Mirror (NOLM)—it investigates the basic concepts of optical bistability, namely nonlinearity and feedback. Numerical simulations demonstrating dynamic dynamics and stability conditions bolster a strong theoretical framework. Recent advancements in bistable optical technologies, including developments in epsilon-near-zero materials, silicon photonics, hybrid plasmonic structures, neuromorphic photonics, and AI-driven photonic processors are also discussed. Furthermore, this review highlights emerging applications of optical bistability in optical logic circuits, high-speed communication, and quantum information processing. This review work is a useful tool for researchers and engineers creating next-generation optical systems because it connects theoretical insights with cutting-edge technological developments.

From optical bistability towards optical computing

Paul Mandel, Stuart D. Smith, Brian S. Wherrett

This book describes a programme of research at both basic and applied levels on the subject of optical bistability, and the devices that can be derived using the physical principles inherent to this phenomenon. A highlight of the volume is the description of research on giant optical nonlinearities and the realization of the first all-optical circuits, The European Joint Optical Bistability (EJOB) project, whose work is represented in this volume, has successfully demonstrated an all-optical digital circuit in the form of a classical finite state machine. This proves the scientific feasibility of a new family of computers which rival, and which will eventually exceed, the maximum processing capability attainable with electronics technology. These impressive advances are at least on part due to the unique collaboration fostered by EJOB, bringing together Belgian, German, British, Italian, French and Irish scientists. The result is a book capturing the massive potential of European science and technology.

InSb As A Material For Optical Computer Components

Dror Sarid, Ralph S. Jameson

InSb has been recognized in recent years as a very good material for nonlinear optical devices because of the extremely high nonlinear index of refraction near its band edge. It has proven valuable in investigating bistable optical etalon performance, and nonlinear processes in semiconductors. Numerous schemes for using bistable etalons as basic elements for optical logic and optical computing have been recently developed. Some considerations for using InSb as a material for developing optical bistable devices, and some design considerations for a method of applying bistable optical elements to array processing for do all optical computer are discussed.

Considerations Involved in the Design of an Optical Digital Computer

Alan Huang

The prime concern in the design of an optical digital computer is "Why?". Optical bistability is faced with the same question. If optical bistability is to compete with other switching technologies solely in terms of speed and power then its development will be haunted by the constant advances in silicon technology.

Algorithmic applications and principles of superconducting quantum computers

Siyu Hui

Nowadays, with the continuous progress of science and technology, the role of quantum computers has received more attention and gradually become a part of national strategies. Many countries, such as the United States, China, and Japan, have invested a lot of resources in research and development, striving to make breakthroughs and take the lead in this field, in order to meet the coming of the future computing era. Superconducting quantum computers are the most widely used computers at the moment. Based on the introduction of Josephson junction, the physical principle of superconducting quantum computers, this paper analyses the advantages and disadvantages of multiple quantum bits as well as the algorithms of various quantum gates in superconducting quantum computers. Moreover, the author also looks forward to the development of the related technologies of superconducting quantum computers. Finally, corresponding suggestions are put forward for some current problems.

Optical bistability: towards all-optical devices

Eusebio Bernabéu, Pedro Martín Mejías, R Martínez-Herrer

The phenomenon of optical bistability is the object of increasing interest owing to its possibilities for important device applications. The object of this short review is to give a description of this current field either from its conceptual theoretical basis or from its applications on optical circuitry and computing. Contents include three sections devoted to optical instabilities, bistable materials and international programs on this topic.
