Abstract

Scaling behavior of spin gap of a bond alternating spin-1/2 anisotropic Heisenberg chain has been studied both in ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) cases. Spin gap has been estimated by using exact diagonalization technique. All those quantities have been obtained for a region of anisotropic parameter Δ defined by 0≤Δ≤1. Spin gap is found to develop as soon as the non-uniformity in the alternating bond strength is introduced in the AFM regime which furthermore sustains in the FM regime as well. Scaling behavior of the spin gap has been studied by introducing scaling exponent. The variation of scaling exponents with Δ is fitted with a regular function.

Ground state properties of the bond alternating spin-1/2 anisotropic Heisenberg chain

Paul, Ghosh

Ground state properties, dispersion relations and scaling behaviour of spin gap of a bond alternating spin-1 2 anisotropic Heisenberg chain have been studied where the exchange interactions on alternate bonds are ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) in two separate cases. The resulting models separately represent nearest neighbour (NN) AFM-AFM and AFM-FM bond alternating chains.Ground state energy has been estimated analytically by using both bond operator and Jordan-Wigner representations and numerically by using exact diagonalization.Dispersion relations, spin gap and several ground state orders have been obtained.Dimer order and string orders are found to coexist in the ground state.Spin gap is found to develop as soon as the non-uniformity in alternating bond strength is introduced in the AFM-AFM chain which further remains non-zero for the AFM-FM chain. This spin gap along with the string orders attribute to the Haldane phase. The Haldane phase is found to exist in most of the anisotropic region similar to the isotropic point.

Numerical evidence of a spin- 1∕2 chain approaching a spin-1 chain

Hsiang-Hsuan Hung, Chang-De Gong

We study the one-dimensional Heisenberg spin-$1∕2$ alternating bond chain in which the nearest neighbor exchange couplings are ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AF) alternatively. By using exact diagonalization and the density matrix renormalization group method, we discuss how the system approaches the AF uniform spin-1 chain under certain conditions. When the ratio of AF to FM coupling strengths, $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ $(\ensuremath{\alpha}={J}_{AF}∕{J}_{F})$, is very small, physical properties of the alternating bond chain such as spin-spin correlation, the string correlation function, and the spin density coincide with those of the AF uniform spin-1 chain. The edge state problem is discussed in the present model with the small $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ limit. In addition, the Haldane gap of the AF uniform spin-1 chain is four times the gap of the system considered.

Scaling behavior of the energy gap of the XXZ model in a transverse magnetic field

S. Mahdavifar

The energy gap of the one-dimensional (1D) spin-[Formula: see text] AF (antiferromagnetic) XXZ model in a transverse magnetic field (h) is studied by using the exact diagonalization technique. We have computed the energy gap in the region of anisotropy parameter -1<Δ<1 and in the vicinity of the critical line Δ = -1. By introducing a practical finite-size scaling approach, we have computed the correct critical exponent of the energy gap in good agreement with the field theoretical and spin-wave approaches. To check this approach, we have also studied the critical exponent of the energy gap of the 1D AF-Heisenberg chain in a staggered magnetic field (h(s)).

A signature for the Luttinger liquid phase in alternating Heisenberg spin-1/2 chains

Jahanfar Abouie, S. Mahdavifar

We have studied the zero and low-temperature behavior of anisotropic alternating antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic Heisenberg spin-1/2 chains in a transverse magnetic field. Using the analytical spinless fermion approach, the thermodynamic behavior of the model has been studied. We have introduced a new order parameter to distinguish the gapless Luttinger liquid phase from the other gapped phases. The exact diagonalization Lanczos results are also used to compare with the spinless fermion ones. We have found a double peak structure in the specific heat curves for the region between the two quantum critical points. Using the numerical full diagonalization results, the existence of the double peak structure is confirmed.

Effects of a space modulation on the behavior of a 1D alternating Heisenberg spin-1/2 model

S. Mahdavifar, Jahanfar Abouie

The effects of a magnetic field (h) and a space modulation (δ) on the magnetic properties of a one-dimensional antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic Heisenberg spin-1/2 model have been studied by means of numerical exact diagonalization of finite size systems, the nonlinear σ model, and a bosonization approach. The space modulation is considered on the antiferromagnetic couplings. At δ = 0, the model is mapped to a gapless Lüttinger liquid phase by increasing the magnetic field. However, the space modulation induces a new gap in the spectrum of the system and the system experiences different quantum phases which are separated by four critical fields. By opening the new gap, a magnetization plateau appears at ½M(sat). The effects of the space modulation are reflected in the emergence of a plateau in other physical functions such as the F-dimer and the bond-dimer order parameters, and the pair-wise entanglement.

Critical exponent in the magnetization curve of quantum spin chains

Tôru Sakai, Minoru Takahashi

The ground-state magnetization curve around the critical magnetic field ${H}_{c}$ of quantum spin chains with a spin gap is investigated. We propose a size scaling method to estimate the critical exponent \ensuremath{\delta} defined as $m\ensuremath{\sim}|H\ensuremath{-}{H}_{c}{|}^{1/\ensuremath{\delta}}$ from finite cluster calculation. The applications of the method to the $S=1$ antiferromagnetic chain and $S=1/2$ bond-alternating chain lead to a common conclusion that $\ensuremath{\delta}=2.$ The same result is derived for both edges of the magnetization plateau of the $S=3/2$ antiferromagnetic chain with single-ion anisotropy.
