Abstract

We have investigated the dynamics of a protomer coupled to two different decoherent environments, each in a configuration called the spin star configuration.Using the quantum mechanics method,in different situations,we obtain the analytical expressions for the transition probability in the protomer system. In thermal equilibrium, there exist well-defined ranges of parameters for which decoherent interaction between the protomer and the environment assists energy transfer in the protomer system, while in pure quantum mechanics states, the decoherent interaction assists energy transfer for an eigenstate but against energy transfer for quantum mechanics averages. In particular,we also find that the dimerization of two bacteriochlorophylls in protomer can always assist energy transfer in certain parameter range, and in the appropriate spin bath energy, the efficiency of energy transport is sensitively depended on the temperature of environments.

Decoherence-Assisted Transport in a Dimer System

Ilya Sinayskiy, A. Marais, Francesco Petruccione +1 more

The dynamics of a dimer coupled to two different environments, each in a spin star configuration under the influence of decoherence, is studied. The exact analytical expression for the transition probability in the dimer system is obtained for different situations, i.e., independent and correlated environments. In all cases considered, it is shown that there exist well-defined ranges of parameters for which decoherent interaction with the environment assists energy transfer in the dimer system. In particular, we find that correlated environments can assist energy transfer more efficiently than separate baths.

Decoherence-assisted transport in pigment protein complexes

Adrià Sonet Ventosa

Two chlorophylls of the FMO complex, the light-harvesting complex of the green sulfur bacteria, are modeled as two coupled qubits, each surrounded by one spin-bath simulating the environment. The dynamics of the system at a non-zero temperature provide exact analytical expressions for the transition probability and the coherence. It is shown that the decoherence-inducing interaction with the environment enhances the electronic energy transfer. Also the correlations in terms of entanglement and nonlocality are quantitatively studied, sensitively differing when introducing a decay term to resemble both chlorophylls being in their ground states. It is proved that nonlocality is a stronger form of correlation than entanglement.

Decoherence-assisted transport in quantum networks

Adriana Marais, Ilya Sinayskiy, Alastair Kay +2 more

It is shown that energy transfer in a homogeneous fully connected quantum network is assisted by a decohering interaction with environmental spins. Analytic expressions for the transfer probabilities are obtained for the zero temperature case, and the effect is shown to persist at physiological temperatures. This model of decoherence-assisted energy transfer is applied to the Fenna–Matthews–Olson complex.

Environment-Assisted Modulation of Heat Flux in a Bio-Inspired System Based on Collision Model

Ali Pedram, Barış Çakmak, Özgür Esat Müstecaplıoğlu

The high energy transfer efficiency of photosynthetic complexes has been a topic of research across many disciplines. Several attempts have been made in order to explain this energy transfer enhancement in terms of quantum mechanical resources such as energetic and vibration coherence and constructive effects of environmental noise. The developments in this line of research have inspired various biomimetic works aiming to use the underlying mechanisms in biological light harvesting complexes for the improvement of synthetic systems. In this article, we explore the effect of an auxiliary hierarchically structured environment interacting with a system on the steady-state heat transport across the system. The cold and hot baths are modeled by a series of identically prepared qubits in their respective thermal states, and we use a collision model to simulate the open quantum dynamics of the system. We investigate the effects of system-environment, inter-environment couplings and coherence of the structured environment on the steady state heat flux and find that such a coupling enhances the energy transfer. Our calculations reveal that there exists a non-monotonic and non-trivial relationship between the steady-state heat flux and the mentioned parameters.

Decoherence in photosynthetic energy transfer : based on a spin bath model

Zhen Gang Zhu

In this thesis we study the coherent energy transfer in photosynthetic systems. This resonant energy transfer has proven to be a coherent transfer in some light harvest complexes. The model which we suggest to describe this mechanism is an exciton hopping on an N-site ring coupled to a spin bath. Analytic results are found for both the dynamics of the influence functional and of the reduced density matrix of the excitons. We also give results for the dynamics of the current as a function of time. By setting states splitting initially into 2 separate wave-packets moving at different velocities, we reproduce the coherent beating phenomenon in experiments.
