Abstract

Abstract In this paper we investigate the optical properties of an open four-level tripod atomic system driven by an elliptically polarized probe field in the presence of the external magnetic field and compare its properties with the corresponding closed system. Our result reveals that absorption, dispersion and group velocity of probe field can be manipulated by adjusting the phase difference between the two circularly polarized components of a single coherent field, magnetic field and cavity parameters i.e. the atomic exit rate from cavity and atomic injection rates. We show that the system can exhibit multiple electromagnetically induced transparency windows in the presence of the external magnetic field. The numerical result shows that the probe field in the open system can be amplified by appropriate choice of cavity parameters, while in the closed system with introduce appropriate phase difference between fields the probe field can be enhanced. Also it is shown that the group velocity of light pulse can be controlled by external magnetic field, relative phase of applied fields and cavity parameters. By changing the parameters the group velocity of light pulse changes from subluminal to superluminal light propagation and vice versa.

Manipulation of pulse propagation in a four-level quantum system via an elliptically polarized light in the presence of external magnetic field

R. Karimi, Seyyed Hossein Asadpour, Saeed Batebi +1 more

The influence of external magnetic field and relative phase between two electric field components of the probe field on absorption–dispersion and group index of a four-level atomic system with two degenerate sublevels are investigated. The results show that, the behaviors of weak probe light can be controlled by an external magnetic field. It is shown that in the presence of the external magnetic field the additional electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) window can be obtained. Our result also reveal that the switching from slow to fast light or vice versa can be manipulated by changing the phase difference between the two circularly polarized components of a single coherent field.

Switching between slow light and fast light by static magnetic field in a degenerate four-level atomic system at room temperature

Nguyen Van Phu, Nguyen Huy Bang, Luong Thi Yen Nga +1 more

Abstract The optical response of a magnetic-degenerated four-level atom system to the two left and right circular polarization components of the probe field is represented at room temperature. The absorption spectrum and group index for the two polarization components of the probe field are controlled according to the static magnetic field and the coupling field under electromagnetically induced transparency condition. By varying the strength of the static magnetic field, the optical response of the atomic medium can be changed from transparency to absorption or vice versa and hence the amplitude of group index also changes from positive extreme to negative extreme or vice versa. The same phenomenon also occurs when changing the coupling field intensity. In addition, temperature also significantly influence on the optical response of the atomic medium, which changes not only the amplitude but also the sign of the group index as the temperature increases. Our analytical results can be useful for experimental observation and related applications of light group index/velocity at room temperature.

Effects of static magnetic field, driving laser strength and polarization on the coherent properties of a microwave mediated four-level tripod-type atomic system

Aparajita Das, Md. Mabud Hossain

Abstract In this theoretical work, we study the optical behaviour of a microwave driven four-level tripod-type atomic system, configured by Zeeman sub-levels in D 1 line of 87 Rb atom. The non-optical microwave field (L) reasonably assists the optical pumping by a linearly polarized (π) laser field (P1) and a right-handed circularly polarized (σ +) laser field (P2), in presence as well as absence of a static magnetic field (MF). The optical responses of the system to the left-handed circularly polarized (σ −) optical probe laser field (Pr) under three specific P1-P2 strength conditions depict substantial variations in the Doppler-free and Doppler-broadened absorption peaks, accompanied with single EIT or double EIT windows. The origin of Doppler-free Pr absorption peaks are explained by analyzing the resonant poles for the scanning Pr which attribute to the decaying-dressed-states. Perceptible changes of resonant pole positions on the complex planes of the poles w. r. t. the applied MF and L signify that one can externally alter the optical responses of the medium. The related Pr dispersion and its controllability are discussed as well. It is found that the interaction length of the Doppler-free medium has a prominent effect on the Pr absorption and transmission when both MF and L are present in the medium. Furthermore, we have shown the modifications in the Doppler-free Pr absorption profiles in presence of MF and L by considering P2 as an elliptically polarized laser field. Interestingly, Pr absorption turns into Pr gain at suitable polarization rotation angles of the elliptically polarized P2 field for different P1-P2 strength ratios.

Controlling optical properties and optical bistability via an external magnetic field in a tripod-type atomic medium

Hoang Thi Huong, Le Nguyen Mai Anh, Le Thi Hoa Lai +5 more

We investigated control of optical bistability behavior based on the probe absorption and Kerr nonlinearity properties in a tripod-type degenerate four-level atom system under an external magnetic field. This excitation configuration can provide two transparent spectral regions on the probe absorption profile. It can be transitioned between the transparency and absorption regimes by turning on or off the magnetic field in different frequency domains. We can effortlessly transform one into two transparency windows, and vice versa, by modifying the intensity of the magnetic field. The investigations showed the enhancement of the Kerr nonlinearity around one/two-EIT windows, thereby forming one/two-channel optical bistability in these frequency regions. In addition, the coupling field intensity, the probe frequency detuning, and the atomic cooperation parameter have also significantly influenced the absorption spectrum, Kerr nonlinearity, and optical bistability. The proposed model has useful applications for storage and optical switching, and nonlinear logic gates in optical communications processing.

Controlling a group velocity of light by magnetic field

Yu. M. Golubev, T. Yu. Golubeva, Yuri V. Rostovtsev +1 more

We have shown that quantum interference in a driven quasi-degenerate two-level atomic system can be controlled by an externally applied magnetic field. We demonstrate that the mechanism of optical control is based on quantum interference, which allows one to implement both electromagnetically induced transparency and electromagnetically induced absorption in one atomic system. Dispersion of such the medium allows one to control group velocity of propagation of light pulses be ultra-slow or superluminal via applied magnetic field.
