Abstract

Relaxation of a three-level atom with non-equidistant spectrum interacting with a thermostat and an external stochastic field is studied. The master equation for the reduced density matrix and its solution in the first order of the perturbation theory are obtained. Using quantum regression theorem, explicit formulas for two-time correlation functions and shapes of radiation lines are derived for all types of three-level atoms and the following stochastic processes: a delta-correlated process and a Kubo-Anderson process. The influence of stochastic perturbations of atom’s energy levels and damping constants of adjacent transitions on width of radiation lines is shown.

Relaxation of a three-level atom in stochastic fields and its spectroscopic properties

V.А. Mikhailov, Nikolay V. Troshkin

Relaxation of a motionless three-level atom with a non-equidistant spectrum in a photon heat bath and an external stochastic field is investigated. In the Markovian approximation of the relaxation processes a master equation for the reduced density matrix is derived by making use of the averaging over realizations of the stochastic field. The master equation is solved exactly. The correlation functions, the shapes of the radiation lines, the intensity correlation and photon number spectrums are calculated for the V, Ξ and Λ atoms and realizations of the stochastic field by a delta-correlated and a Kubo-Anderson processes.

Non-Markovian dynamics of a three-level atom in a stochastic field with finite correlation time due to initial correlations

Victor Mikhailov, Nikolay V. Troshkin

Dynamics of a three-level atom interacting with a stochastically fluctuating environment characterized by finite correlation time is investigated in the cases of a product initial state and a correlated initial state. The correlated initial state is obtained by the state reduction caused by the von Neumann measurement on the quantum system evolved from the product initial state and surrounded by the initially stationary stochastic environment. It is shown that in case of a pure dephasing process under the influence of a Kubo-Anderson type stochastic environment, the projective measurement causes the emergence of correlations between previously independent stochastic processes, their non-stationarity, and also causes the transition from a Markovian-type evolution to a non-Markovian one.

Creation and destruction of the coherence for quantum systems in regular and stochastic fields

Alexander V. Gorokhov

The problem of the coherent states generation with definite parameters for multilevel quantum systems is investigated. The interaction with external environment and stochastic fields can destroy of the coherence. The competition of these processes is considered on a base of Fokker - Planck Equations approach, deriving from master equation for the density matrix of the system. Examples of the coherent states dynamics for two-level atoms in an external stochastic field in the nonideal resonator are considered. Average over the realizations of stochastic fields is performed for the case of white gaussian noise and Kubo - Anderson process. Explicit formulas for transition probabilities, longitudinal and transversal relaxation times and shape of radiation line are obtained.

Some features of the optical manifestation of relaxation

Pavel A Apanasevich, Alexander P. Nizovtsev

It is shown that, in general, the interaction between relaxing quantum systems and radiation is described by non-Markov transport equations for the density matrix ρ p and the relaxation matrix depends on the properties of the radiation. The usual Markov-type equations for ρ p are obtained from these equations if γτ c ≪1 and (∊ 2 +4 V 2 ) 1/2 τ c ≪1 (γ is the width of the investigated transition in a quantum system, rc is the correlation time of the perturbations causing relaxation, e is the frequency detuning, and V is the energy of the interaction between the system and the radiation field). When the second inequality is disobeyed, the relaxation process deviates strongly from the Markov type. In the case of small values of V , this results in a non-Lorentzian profile of the absorption lines characterized by a steep descent in the wings. In the range of high values of V , when 2 V τ c 1, the whole relaxation process becomes greatly modified: the dependence of the relaxation coefficients on V becomes strong and a coupling appears between the relaxations of the diagonal and the nondiagonal elements of the density matrix. This is manifested, in particular, in the saturation effect: the term describing saturation in the expression for the polarizability changes considerably and the expression for the line width loses the component due to the adiabatic (elastic) perturbation.
