Approximation to the quantum planar rotor coupled to a finite temperature bath

Abstract

Abstract An approximation to the description of the dynamics of a quantum planar rotor coupled to a finite temperature bath is derived by considering a microscopic model of interaction based on an angular momentum exchange with two different environments coupled independently to the positive and negative angular momentum spectrum. A non-Lindblad master equation is derived for this microscopic model by using the Born–Markov approximation in the weak coupling limit. We show that under this approximation the rotor dynamics presents the correct damping behavior of the motion and the thermal state reached by the rotor is in the form of Boltzmann distribution. The case of the quantum rotor in an external uniform field and the quantum kicked rotor are briefly discussed as exemplification.

Thermalization of the quantum planar rotor with external potential

Birthe Schrinski, Yoon Jun Chan, Björn Schrinski

We study decoherence, diffusion, friction, and how they thermalize a planar rotor in the presence of an external potential. Representing the quantum master equation in terms of auxiliary Wigner functions in periodic phase space not only illustrates the thermalization process in a concise way, but also allows for an efficient numerical evaluation of the open quantum dynamics and its approximate analytical description. In particular, we analytically and numerically verify the existence of a steady state that, in the high-temperature regime, closely approximates a Gibbs state. We also derive the proper classical limit of the planar rotor time evolution and present exemplary numerical studies to verify our results.

Microscopic derivation of a completely positive master equation for the description of Open Quantum Brownian Motion of a particle in a potential

Ayanda Zungu, Ilya Sinayskiy, Francesco Petruccione

Open Quantum Brownian Motion (OQBM) was introduced as a scaling limit of discrete-time open quantum walks. This limit defines a new class of quantum Brownian motion, which incorporates both the external and internal degrees of freedom of the Brownian particle. We consider a weakly driven Brownian particle confined in a harmonic potential and dissipatively coupled to a thermal bath. Applying the rotating wave approximation (RWA) to the system-bath interaction Hamiltonian, we derive a completely positive Born-Markov master equation for the reduced dynamics. We express the resulting master equation in the coordinate representation and, utilizing the adiabatic elimination of fast variables, derive a completely positive hybrid quantum-classical master equation that defines OQBM. We illustrate the resulting dynamics using examples of initial Gaussian and non-Gaussian distributions of the OQBM walker. Both examples reveal the emergence of Gaussian distributions in the limiting behavior of the OQBM dynamics, which closely matches that of the standard OQBM. With the help of the obtained OQBM master equation, we derive the equations for the $n$-th moments and the cumulants of the position distribution of the open Brownian walker. We subsequently solve these equations numerically for Gaussian initial distributions across various parameter regimes. Notably, we find that the third-order cumulant is nonzero, indicating that the dynamics' intrinsic generator is non-Gaussian.

Coupled Quantum Kicked Rotors Under Lindbladian Dynamics

Adam Bäck, Philip Santi Straihamer

Lindblad dynamics is one of the most popular approaches to study open quantum systems. This paper studies a kicked rotor; in particular, a two rotor system where one of the rotors is treated as the environment and the other is studied with the Lindblad master equation. The energy levels are solved explicitly in terms of Bessel functions and the results show that the energy levels exhibit dissipative behavior with variance in momentum increasing as $\langle\hat{p}^2\rangle=2Dt$ similar to the classical kicked rotor. This result shows us how interaction between systems can break down quantum phenomena and result in more classical results, bridging the gap between the quantum and the classical world.

Derivation of Lindblad master equation for the quantum Ising model interacting with a heat bath

Peizhi Mai, Shuai Yin

Starting from the Liouville-von Neumann equation, under a weak coupling limit we derive the Lindblad master equation for the one-dimensional quantum Ising model in a Markov approximation and a rotating wave approximation. We also prove that the steady solution of the Lindblad equation is the canonical distribution independent of the dissipation rate.

Lindblad model of quantum Brownian motion

Aniello Lampo, Soon Hoe Lim, Jan Wehr +2 more

The theory of quantum Brownian motion describes the properties of a large class of open quantum systems. Nonetheless, its description in terms of a Born-Markov master equation, widely used in the literature, is known to violate the positivity of the density operator at very low temperatures. We study an extension of existing models, leading to an equation in the Lindblad form, which is free of this problem. We study the dynamics of the model, including the detailed properties of its stationary solution, for both constant and position-dependent coupling of the Brownian particle to the bath, focusing in particular on the correlations and the squeezing of the probability distribution induced by the environment.

Non-Markovian master equation for a damped driven two-state system

P Haikka

We present a detailed microscopic derivation for a non-Markovian master equation for a driven two-state system interacting with a general structured reservoir. The master equation is derived using the time-convolutionless projection operator technique in the limit of weak coupling between the two-state quantum system and its environment. We briefly discuss the Markov approximation, the secular approximation and their validity.
