Abstract

In this paper, we extend the studies on the emergent thermodynamics in a quenched quantum Ising chain (QIC) [R. Dorner, J. Goold, C. Cormick, M. Paternostro, and V. Vedral, Phys. Rev. Lett. 109, 160601 (2012)] to a more general quantum spin chain with asymmetrical excitation spectra. We verify that the Jarzynski and Tasaki-Crooks relations are still tenable in this system. As an example, we discuss the behaviors of the work done and irreversible entropy production induced by a sudden quenching in the anisotropic XY chain in a transverse field with the XZY-YZX type of three-site interactions. Different from the QIC, this system has the phase transitions not only between two gapped phases, but also between gapped (or gapless) and gapless phases at zero temperature. We discuss the effects of quantum phase transitions on the work done and irreversible entropy production at low temperature.

Dynamical quantum phase transition in quantum spin chains with gapless phases

Kaiyuan Cao, Zhong Ming, Peiqing Tong

The dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs) in quantum spin chains with gapless phases after a sudden quench are studied. We mainly consider the general systems with asymmetrical quasiparticle excitation spectra and obtain the general expression of the Loschmidt echo as well as the general conditions for the occurrence of DQPTs. As two examples, we study the DQPTs in the \emph{XY} chains with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and \emph{XZY-YZX} type of three-site interaction. It's found that the DQPTs may not occur in the quench across the quantum phase transitions regardless of whether the quench is from the gapless phase to gapped phase or from the gapped phase to gapless phase. This is different from the DQPTs in the case of quench from the gapped phase to gapped phase, in which the DQPTs will always appear. Besides, we also analyze the different reasons for the absence of DQPTs in the quench from the gapless phase and the gapped phase.

Dynamical quantum phase transition in XY chains with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya and XZY–YZX three-site interactions

Kaiyuan Cao, Ming Zhong, Peiqing Tong

We study the dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs) in the XY chains with the Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction and the XZY–YZX type of three-site interaction after a sudden quench. Both the models can be mapped to the spinless free fermion models by the Jordan–Wigner and Bogoliubov transformations with the form H = ∑ k ε k ( η k † η k − 1 2 ) , where the quasiparticle excitation spectra εk may be smaller than 0 for some k and are asymmetrical (εk ≠ ε –k ). It is found that the factors of Loschmidt echo equal 1 for some k corresponding to the quasiparticle excitation spectra of the pre-quench Hamiltonian satisfying εk ⋅ ε –k < 0, when the quench is from the gapless phase. By considering the quench from different ground states, we obtain the conditions for the occurrence of DQPTs for the general XY chains with gapless phase, and find that the DQPTs may not occur in the quench across the quantum phase transitions regardless of whether the quench is from the gapless phase to gapped phase or from the gapped phase to gapless phase. This is different from the DQPTs in the case of quench from the gapped phase to gapped phase, in which the DQPTs will always appear. Moreover, we analyze the different reasons for the absence of DQPTs in the quench from the gapless phase and the gapped phase. The conclusion can also be extended to the general quantum spin chains.

Emergent Thermodynamics in a Quenched Quantum Many-Body System

R. Dörner, John Goold, Cecilia Cormick +2 more

We study the statistics of the work done, fluctuation relations, and irreversible entropy production in a quantum many-body system subject to the sudden quench of a control parameter. By treating the quench as a thermodynamic transformation we show that the emergence of irreversibility in the nonequilibrium dynamics of closed many-body quantum systems can be accurately characterized. We demonstrate our ideas by considering a transverse quantum Ising model that is taken out of equilibrium by an instantaneous change of the transverse field.

Quantum quench dynamics in the transverse field Ising model at nonzero temperatures

Nils O. Abeling, Stefan K. Kehrein

The recently discovered dynamical phase transition denotes nonanalytic behavior in the real-time evolution of quantum systems in the thermodynamic limit, and it has been shown to occur in different systems at zero temperature [Heyl et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 135704 (2013)]. In this paper, we extend the analysis to nonzero temperature by studying a generalized form of the Loschmidt echo, the work distribution function, of a quantum quench in the transverse field Ising model. Although the quantitative behavior at nonzero temperatures still displays features derived from the zero-temperature nonanalyticities, it is shown that in this model dynamical phase transitions do not exist if $T>0$. This is a consequence of the system being initialized in a thermal state. Moreover, we elucidate how the Tasaki-Crooks-Jarzynski relation can be exploited as a symmetry relation for a global quench or to obtain the change of the equilibrium free-energy density.

Effects of multisite interaction on nonequilibrium thermodynamics of XY spin chain in a transverse filed

Zhi He, Min Yu, Qiong Wang

In recent years, the property of nonequilibrium thermodynamics in closed system, especially in spin chain system undergoing a quenching process, has become one of the hot topics in the quantum thermodynamics. The nonequilibrium thermodynamic properties of XY spin chain with XZX + YZY type of three-site interaction under a transverse field are studied by considering an exactly solvable model. First we review some basic concepts, i.e., the work distribution, the averaged work, the fluctuation of work, and the irreversible entropy in the nonequilibrium thermodynamics, and give the theoretical model and its solutions. Then, we concretely discuss the effects of the three-site interaction of XZX + YZY type on the average work, the fluctuation of work and the irreversible entropy in the extended XY chain undergoing a quench process. The theoretical calculation and numerical simulation show that the three-site interaction of XZX + YZY type may play a positive and negative role in the increase of the averaged work, which depends on the strength of initial external magnetic field. Moreover, we also find that work fluctuation can be effectively suppressed by adjusting the intensity of XZX + YZY three-site interaction. Finally, it is found that the irreversible entropy production presents a sharp peak characteristic near the critical magnetic field, and the value of the peak sharp decreases with the increase of XZX + YZY three-site interaction. Simultaneously, the corresponding physical explanations are also given. In a word, the results given in present paper may increasingly arouse one’s interest in the nonequilibrium quantum thermodynamics.
