Abstract

I present a family of one-dimensional bosonic liquids analogous to non-Abelian fractional quantum Hall states. A new quantum number is introduced to characterize these liquids, the chiral momentum, which differs from the usual angular or linear momentum in one dimension. As their two-dimensional counterparts, these liquids minimize a $k$-body hard-core interaction with the minimum total chiral momentum. They exhibit global order, with a hidden organization of the particles in $k$ identical copies of a one-dimensional Laughlin state. For $k=2$ the state is a $p$-wave paired phase corresponding to the Pfaffian quantum Hall state. By imposing conservation of the total chiral momentum, an exact parent Hamiltonian is derived which involves long-range tunneling and interaction processes with an amplitude decaying with the chord distance. This family of non-Abelian liquids is shown to be in formal correspondence with a family of spin-$\frac{k}{2}$ liquids which are total singlets made out of $k$ indistinguishable resonating valence bond states. The corresponding spin Hamiltonians are obtained.

Exact Parent Lattice Hamiltonian for One-Dimensional Non-Abelian Fractional Quantum Hall Liquids

Belén Paredes

I present a family of one-dimensional time reversal lattice Hamiltonians whose exact ground states are bosonic non-Abelian fractional quantum Hall liquids with well defined total chiral momentum. These Hamiltonians describe k-hard-core bosons and involve long-range tunneling and interaction processes with an amplitude decaying with the chord distance. For k=2 the ground state is a p-wave paired phase corresponding to the Pfaffian quantum Hall state. This family of non-Abelian liquids is shown to be in one-to-one correspondence with a family of non-Abelian spin-k/2 liquids exhibiting hidden non-local order. They are total singlets made out of k indistinguishable Resonating Valence Bond states. The corresponding spin parent Hamiltonians are obtained.

Non-Abelian chiral spin liquid in a quantum antiferromagnet revealed by an iPEPS study

Ji-Yao Chen, Laurens Vanderstraeten, Sylvain Capponi +1 more

Abelian and non-Abelian topological phases exhibiting protected chiral edge modes are ubiquitous in the realm of the fractional quantum Hall (FQH) effect. Here, we investigate a spin-1 Hamiltonian on the square lattice which could, potentially, host the spin liquid analog of the (bosonic) non-Abelian Moore-Read FQH state, as suggested by exact diagonalization of small clusters. Using families of fully SU(2)-spin symmetric and translationally invariant chiral projected entangled pair states (PEPS), variational energy optimization is performed using infinite-PEPS methods, providing good agreement with density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) results. A careful analysis of the bulk spin-spin and dimer-dimer correlation functions in the optimized spin liquid suggests that they exhibit long-range ``gossamer tails''. From the investigation of the entanglement spectrum, we observe sharply defined chiral edge modes following the prediction of the SU(2)${}_{2}$ Wess-Zumino-Witten theory and exhibiting a conformal field theory (CFT) central charge $c=3/2$, as expected for a Moore-Read chiral spin liquid. Using the PEPS bulk-edge correspondence, we argue the ``weak'' criticality of the bulk is in fact a finite-$D$ artifact of the chiral PEPS, which quickly becomes (practically) irrelevant as the PEPS bond dimension $D$ is increased. We conclude that the PEPS formalism offers an unbiased and efficient method to investigate non-Abelian chiral spin liquids in quantum antiferromagnets.

Lattice spin models for non-Abelian chiral spin liquids

P. Lecheminant, Alexei M. Tsvelik

We suggest a class of two-dimensional lattice spin Hamiltonians describing non-Abelian SU(2) chiral spin liquids---spin analogs of fractional non-Abelian quantum Hall states---with gapped bulk and gapless chiral edge excitations described by the SU(2)${}_{n}$ Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten conformal field theory. The models are constructed from an array of generalized spin-$n/2$ ladders with multi-spin-exchange interactions which are coupled by isolated spins. Such models allow a controllable analytic treatment starting from the one-dimensional limit and are characterized by a bulk gap and non-Abelian SU(2)${}_{n}$ gapless edge excitations.

Chiral topological spin liquids with projected entangled pair states

Didier Poilblanc, J. I. Cirac, Norbert Schuch

Topological chiral phases are ubiquitous in the physics of the fractional quantum Hall effect. Nonchiral topological spin liquids are also well known. Here, using the framework of projected entangled pair states (PEPS), we construct a family of chiral spin liquids on the square lattice, which are generalized spin-1/2 resonating valence bond (RVB) states obtained from deformed local tensors with $d+i\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}d$ symmetry. On a cylinder, we construct four topological sectors with even or odd number of spinons on the boundary and even or odd number of (${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$) fluxes penetrating the cylinder, which, we argue, remain orthogonal in the limit of infinite perimeter. The analysis of the transfer matrix provides evidence of short-range (long-range) triplet (singlet) correlations as for the critical (nonchiral) RVB state. The entanglement spectrum exhibits chiral edge modes, which we confront to predictions of the conformal field theory, and the corresponding entanglement Hamiltonian is shown to be long-ranged.

Tracing non-Abelian anyons via impurity particles

Niccolò Baldelli, Bruno Juliá-Díaz, Utso Bhattacharya +2 more

Non-Abelian excitations are an interesting feature of many fractional quantum Hall phases, including those phases described by the Moore-Read (or Pfaffian) wave function. However, the detection of the non-Abelian quasiparticles is challenging. Here, we consider a system described by the Moore-Read wave function and assume that impurity particles bind to its quasiholes. Then, the angular momentum of the impurities, reflected also by the impurity density, provides a useful witness of the physics of the non-Abelian excitations. By demanding that the impurities are constrained to the lowest Landau level, we are able to write down the corresponding many-body wave function describing both the Moore-Read liquid and the impurities. Through Monte Carlo sampling, we determine the impurity angular momentum, and we show that it suggests a quantum-statistical parameter $\ensuremath{\alpha}=a\ensuremath{\nu}\ensuremath{-}b+P/2$ for the quasiholes, where $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ ranges from 0 for bosons to 1 for fermions. A reasonable agreement with the Monte Carlo results is obtained for $a=1/4$, $b=1/8$, and $P=0,1$ depending on the parity of the particle number in the Moore-Read liquid. This parity dependence of the angular momentum serves as an unambiguous demonstration of the non-Abelian nature of the excitations. In addition to the studies of excitations in the Moore-Read liquid, we also apply our scheme to Laughlin liquids, for which we focus on interacting bosonic impurities. With this, the impurities themselves form Laughlin states, which allows for a study of hierarchical fractional quantum Hall states.

Hierarchy construction for non-Abelian fractional quantum Hall states via anyon condensation

Carolyn Zhang, Ashvin Vishwanath, Xiao-Gang Wen

For a given parent fractional quantum Hall (FQH) state at filling fraction $\ensuremath{\nu}$, the hierarchy construction produces FQH states at nearby filling fractions ${{\ensuremath{\nu}}_{n}}$ by condensing minimally charged quasiholes or quasiparticles of the parent state into their own FQH states. The hierarchy construction has been useful for relating families of FQH states and for the experimental identification of the topological order of parent states via the properties of daughter states. We reinterpret the hierarchy construction as a two-step procedure: stacking with a second FQH state and condensing a condensable algebra of bosons. This two-step procedure can be applied to both Abelian and non-Abelian FQH states, and it does not require calculations with a wave function. We show this construction reproduces the hierarchies for the Laughlin and Pfaffian states, and can be applied further to propose hierarchies for various non-Abelian FQH states.
