Abstract

We demonstrate a fiber-integrated optical Kerr-nonlinearity where a single atom imprints the maximum nonlinear phase shift of pi between the one and two photon case. We employ this to generate entanglement between previously independent photons.

Optical π phase shift created with a single-photon pulse

Daniel Tiarks, Steffen Schmidt, Gerhard Rempe +1 more

A deterministic photon-photon quantum logic gate is a long-standing goal. Building such a gate becomes possible if a light pulse containing only one photon imprints a phase shift of π onto another light field. We experimentally demonstrate the generation of such a π phase shift with a single-photon pulse. A first light pulse containing less than one photon on average is stored in an atomic gas. Rydberg blockade combined with electromagnetically induced transparency creates a phase shift for a second light pulse, which propagates through the medium. We measure the π phase shift of the second pulse when we postselect the data upon the detection of a retrieved photon from the first pulse. This demonstrates a crucial step toward a photon-photon gate and offers a variety of applications in the field of quantum information processing.

Nonlinear optics at the two-photon level

J. D. Franson, T. B. Pittman

Summary form only given.Nonlinear optical effects are normally limited to high-intensity fields containing a large number of photons because the electric field associated with a single photon is usually very weak. Nonlinear phase shifts at the two-photon level previously have been observed using high-Q cavities and atomic beams. The authors recently predicted that nonlocal effects involving pairs of atoms in a medium could enhance the nonlinear interaction between two photons to the point that nonlinear phase shifts could be obtained in an ordinary medium without the use of resonant cavities.

Optimizing conditional- π phase shift between two weak coherent pulses via a closed double- Λ atomic system

Gyu-Hyeok Lee, U-Shin Kim, Yoon-Ho Kim

Conditional- π phase shift between two photons is essential for entanglement generation and universal quantum logic. For photons, however, direct conditional controls are not possible and must be mediated by nonlinear media. Achieving such operations for photonic polarization qubits has remained difficult due to intrinsically weak photon-photon nonlinearities in atomic systems. Here, we show that a conditional- π phase shift between two weak coherent pulses can be realized via a cavityless closed double- Λ atomic system, where quantum interference between linear and nonlinear atom-photon interactions enables conditional control. By optimizing the interaction parameters, including amplitude and phase compensations, we identify the conditions for conditional- π phase shift between two weak coherent pulses. Experimentally, we observe the conditional- π phase shift with relative output amplitude 0.74 ± 0.06 and phase shift ( 0.95 ± 0.03 ) π between the two-photon amplitudes | H H 〉 and | V V 〉 . A theoretical analysis of Bell-state generation from weak coherent pulses further shows Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt inequality violation and nonzero concurrence. Our results clarify both the theoretical requirements and the experimental feasibility of cavityless atom-mediated nonlinearities for photonic quantum logic, establishing a scalable route toward nonlinear quantum photonics.

Optimized phase switching using a single-atom nonlinearity

We show that a nonlinear phase shift of π can be obtained by using a single two-level atom in a one-sided cavity with negligible losses. This result implies that the use of a one-sided cavity can significantly improve the π/18 phase shift previously observed by Turchette et al (1995 Phys. Rev. Lett. 75 4710).

Efficiencies for the single-mode operation of a quantum optical nonlinear shift gate

Kunihiro Kojima, Holger Friedrich Hofmann, Shigeki Takeuchi +1 more

We investigate the single-mode operation of a quantum optical nonlinear $\ensuremath{\pi}$ phase-shift gate implemented by a single two-level atom in one-dimensional free space. Since the single-mode property of the input photons at the atom is not preserved in the interaction at the atom, we analyze the efficiency of single-mode operation that can still be achieved. We show how the input pulse shape can be optimized to obtain high efficiencies for the nonlinear single-mode operation. With this analysis, we obtain an optimal single-mode transmittance per photon of 78% for the successful nonlinear $\ensuremath{\pi}$ phase-shift operation.
