Abstract

We observed -4.9 ns negative delay in optical pulse propagation in resonant Whispering Gallery Mode of microsphere. The observed fast light can well be explained by a directional coupling theory on the under coupling condition.

Direct observation of stopped light in a whispering-gallery-mode microresonator

Anatoliy A. Savchenkov, Andrey B. Matsko, Vladimir S. Ilchenko +2 more

We introduce the definition of group velocity for a system with a discrete spectrum and apply it to a linear resonator. We show that a positive, negative, or zero group velocity can be obtained for light propagating in the whispering-gallery modes of a microspherical resonator. The associated group delay is practically independent of the ring-down time of the resonator. We demonstrate ``stopped light'' in an experiment with a fused silica microsphere.

We observed slow light in a coupled-resonator induced transparency in a tandem microsphere-fiber-taper system. Nearly Gaussian-shaped pulses propagated with a large positive delay of 6.2 ns and 78% transmission through a transparent frequency window.

Slow and fast light in a microsphere-optical fiber system

Kouki Totsuka, Makoto Tomita

The dispersion relation in a system of a fiber taper coupled with a microsphere is investigated. On the undercoupling condition, in which the coupling strength between the sphere and the fiber is weak compared with the round-trip loss in the sphere, the system shows anomalous dispersion. On the other hand, on the overcoupling condition, in which the coupling strength is strong compared with the loss, the system shows normal dispersion. We performed pulse propagation experiments and observed both the slow light and the fast light relevant to the normal and anomalous dispersions in the single microsphere-fiber taper system, controlling the coupling strength between the sphere and the fiber. The observed pulse propagation times show good agreement with theoretical calculations based on a directional coupling theory.
