Abstract

Ba+ and Yb+ ions were trapped with buffer gas in a rf ion trap. The number and the storagetime of the trapped ions were determined by the rf resonance method. It was shown thatthe motion of the trapped ions was expressed by an external forced oscillation equation with anonlinear term in the case the fabricated trap was imperfect. Due to this nonlinear effect, thesubharmonic oscillation was induced, and thus the number and the storage time of the trappedions were decreased and shortened, respectively. The temperature and the spatial distributionof the trapped ions were determined by the fluorescence detection method.

Determination of Characteristics of Yb+ Ion Cloud Trapped in a RF Trap with He Buffer Gas

Jun Yoda, Kazuhiko Sugiyama

Characteristics of the Yb+ ion cloud trapped in a rf trap in the presence of He buffer gas were determined by fluorescence detection as well as the rf resonance method. Combining the results obtained by the two methods, we determined the spatial ion density distribution and found that the trapped ions were thermalized by collisions with the He buffer gas. It was confirmed by both methods that the harmonic motion of the trapped ions was excited by the trapping field leaked to the rf resonance detection circuit (subharmonic oscillation), and moreover, by the fluorescence detection method, that the probing rf field used for the rf resonance method was indispensable as “the initial push” for exciting the amplitude.

Disappearance of Trapped Yb+

Jun Yoda, Kazuhiko Sugiyama

The storage time of Yb+ ions trapped in an r.f. trap was determined by the rf resonance absorption method in the presence of buffer gas, without and with laser radiation of a frequency equal to the transition from the S1/2 ground state to the excited P1/2 state. The storage time of the ions with the buffer gas (presure between 1 × 10−4 and 4·2 × 10−4 Pa) was several hours without the laser radiation; this period was shortened to several hundred seconds by irradiation with a 500 nW laser source. This phenomenon shows that the trapped Yb+ ions disappeared from the trap as a result of irradiation with the resonance laser light.

Parametric excitations of trapped ions in a linear rf ion trap

Xujun Zhao, Vladimir L. Ryjkov, Hans A. Schuessler

The parametric resonant behavior of ions inside a linear rf ion trap is studied both theoretically and experimentally. Theoretically, the resonant motion of ions inside an ideal ion trap is described by approximating the trapping rf field as a harmonic pseudopotential with the ions being excited by an additional quadrupolar ac voltage. The resulting damped Mathieu equation is studied and the regions of resonant instability are predicted by investigating the solutions. Experimentally, the parametric excitation of ${\mathrm{Mg}}^{+}$ ions is observed by subjecting the cloud of trapped ions to an additional quadrupolar ac field. The various ion motion resonances are detected through the disappearance of the laser-induced fluorescence signal. Weak damping is introduced by the presence of a low-pressure buffer gas. The experimental results are compared with the theoretical predictions.

Trapping of Ca+ Ions and Optical Detection

Shinji Urabe, Hidetsuka Imajo, Kazuhiro Hayasaka +1 more

A medium-sized rf ion trap is developed, and stored Ca+ ions are optically detected. Weak fluorescence from Ca+ ions is detected using a frequency-doubled Ti:sapphire laser and the photon counting method. The temperature and number of stored ions are estimated from the measured spectrum of the ions and the spatial distribution of the ion cloud.

Collective Phenomena Induced by Ion Mixturesin a RF Ion Trap

Akihiro Kajita, Masahiro Kimura, Shunsuke Ohtani +2 more

Collective motions and anharmonic oscillations induced by a mixture of two ion species with different masses in a rf ion trap are reported. The absorption spectra of the probing rf power by the resonant oscillations of ion clouds have been observed for several ion species with various mixing ratios. It is shown that significant nonlinear effects manifest themselves strongly when the mass difference is in a certain range. One of such nonlinear effects, the first observation of significant hysteresis in the absorption spectrum of the probing rf field, is understood to be due to the anharmonic force term of the third order induced by the interactions of two ion clouds. The term has been estimated by fitting the observed absorption profile to the approximate solution of Duffing's equation.

Fluorescence Detection and Buffer Gas Cooling of Trapped Mercury Ions in Paul Trap

Lei She, Wenming Wang, Lei Bai +4 more

Hg ions are confined in a hyperboloid ion trap. With the rf discharge 202 Hg isotope lamp, the fluorescence signal of trapped Hg ions is observed. By means of buffer gas cooling, the ionic temperature is reduced. As a result, the trapping time is increased and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the fluorescent signal is improved. The temperature of ion cloud is estimated by measuring the space charge shift.
