Abstract

We illustrate an alternate mechanism which causes probe transparency in a Doppler-broadened V-type system. Our numerical results obtained for very low control field amplitudes clearly indicate the feasibility of attaining nearly perfect probe transparency that originates from an additional one-photon coherence induced by the control field in a Doppler-broadened V-type system. In this regime of control field amplitudes, the criterion for electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) is not fulfilled and hence the contribution of the usual EIT term is found to be negligible.

Electromagnetically Induced Transparency Window in the System of Four-level Configuration

Wu Han-Hua

The absorption and dispersion properties of an N-type four-level system with Doppler(broadening) effect were investigated. In this system we considered two coherent fields and a probe field. When the second coherent field is absent, this system is a single three-level configuration, and the absorption line is just one clear electromagnetically induced transparency(EIT) window. While the second coherent field exists, there are two EIT windows which become wide and deep with the(coherent) intensity increasing. The position width and absorbance of the transparency windows can be manipulated by adjusting the detuning of the driving field. In addition,we also found that the medium shows a large refractive index at each transparency window, and the group velocity of the probe laser can be reduced.

Electromagnetically induced transparency and electromagnetically induced absorption in Y-type system

Kalan Mal, Khairul Islam, Suman Mondal +2 more

The propagation of a probe field through a four-level Y-type atomic system is described in the presence of two additional coherent radiation fields, namely, the control field and the coupling field. An expression for the probe response is derived analytically from the optical Bloch equations under steady state condition to study the absorptive properties of the system under probe field propagation through an ensemble of stationary atoms as well as in a Doppler broadened atomic vapor medium. The most striking result is the conversion of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) into electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) as we start switching from weak probe regime to strong probe regime. The dependence of this conversion on residual Doppler averaging due to wavelength mismatch is also shown by choosing the coupling transition as a Rydberg transition.

Coherent-state-induced transparency

Anahit L. Gogyan, Yu. P. Malakyan

We examine electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in an ensemble of cold $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}$-type atoms induced by a quantum control field in multimode coherent states and compare it with the transparency created by the classical light of the same intensity. We show that the perfect coincidence is achieved only in the case of a single-mode coherent state, whereas the transparency sharply decreases, when the number of the modes exceeds the mean number of control photons in the medium. The origin of the effect is the modification of photon statistics in the control field with increasing the number of the modes that weakens its interaction with atoms resulting in a strong probe absorption. For the same reason, the probe pulse transforms from EIT-based slow light into superluminal propagation caused by the absorption.

Effect of Doppler broadening on the vacuum induced coherence-dependent probe field absorption in Y-type four-level system

Kening Jia, Liang Ying, Liu Zhong-Bo +2 more

Using the numerical result, the influence of the Doppler broadening on the vacuum induced coherence (VIC) related probe field absorption is discussed. It is shown that if there exists no Doppler broadening, only when VIC is absent can the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) phenomenon occur; VIC leads the probe field absorption to vary obviously and the gain to appear; in both cases with and without VIC, the absorption curve has a double-peak structure which is symmetrical about the probe detuning. If there exists the Doppler broadening, in both cases with and without VIC, EIT phenomenon can always occur; VIC still leads the probe field absorption to vary obviously and the gain to appear; no matter whether the VIC is present. The probe field absorption has the following characteristics: the absorption curve no longer has symmetry about the probe field detuning and changes gradually from the double-peak structure to the single-peak structure with Doppler broadening width (D) increasing; the probe field absorption does not monotonically increase or decrease with D increasing; the probe field absorption, when the probe and driving fields propagate along the opposite directions, is smaller than that when the probe and driving fields propagate along the same directions.

Λ-type electromagnetically induced transparency and absorption by controlling atomic coherence

Li-Ya Pei, Shiyang Zheng, Jinyan Niu

In a Λ-type electromagnetically induced transparency system, it shows that on the Doppler-broadened linear absorption background, as the probe intensity increases, the single narrow line-width window gradually evolves into 3 windows and 2 absorption peaks alternately. In this paper, the mechanism of probe intensity is studied in detail by using the dressed-state model. We propose that when the probe field is not so weak, the atomic Raman coherence can be manipulated by its intensity. For a Doppler-broadened system, there will appear the discontinuous energy variation of the dressed-states, and the large Raman loss due to the double resonance for dressed-states, which are the key factors for the evolution of the transparency window.

Wave-vector mismatch effects in electromagnetically induced transparency in Y -type systems

Azeem B. Mirza, Suneel Pratap Singh

We study electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) of a probe field in a four-level Y-type atomic system driven by two strong laser (coupling) fields. Both homogeneously (radiative) and Doppler broadened systems are considered. The effect of residual Doppler broadening on EIT is demonstrated for various wave-vector mismatches occurring when the frequency of coupling fields is equal (${k}_{c}$ $=$ ${k}_{p}$), higher (${k}_{c}>{k}_{p}$), or lesser (${k}_{c}<{k}_{p}$) than that of the probe field frequency. Contrary to usual belief it is found that for the ${k}_{c}>{k}_{p}$ wave-vector mismatch case, the probe absorption profile displays very wide and almost complete single or double EIT windows whose width, depth, and location depend upon the wave-vector mismatch, Rabi frequencies, and atom field detuning of the coupling fields. Analytical results are also obtained to explain these interesting features.
