Abstract

After nearly three decades of rapid development, the quantum information technology in the theoretical and technical studies has gained remarkable achievements. This review gives a brief introduction to the development of various hot research branches of quantum information technology, including quantum cryptography, quantum communication, quantum computing, quantum simulation, quantum metrology, and fundamental theory of quantum information. In addition, this review also discusses various physical systems which have been well applied in the quantum information technology, such as atomic, molecular and optical physics, different branches in solid state physics (superconducting Josephson Junction system, semiconductor quantum dots, Nitrogen-vacancy color centers in diamond), trapped ions, and nuclear magnetic resonance system. With the investigation and accumulation of quantum information technology, the ability to control microscopic world has been significantly improved. Quantum cryptography has been close to the practical application and the long-distance quantum communication has overcome the practical obstacles in principle. Quantum simulation is close to the limit of the classical computer. Also, quantum metrology has gained rapid development. This review not only shows the situation of the international development of quantum information technology, but also highlights the achievements of China in recent years. These achievements demonstrate that China is an indispensable force in the worldwide quantum information community.

Quantum information technology: Current status and prospects

Jian-Wei Pan

In the early decades of the 20th century, the inception of quantum mechanics catalyzed the first quantum revolution, resulting in groundbreaking technological advances, such as nuclear energy, semiconductors, lasers, nuclear magnetic resonance, superconductivity, and global satellite positioning systems. These innovations have promoted significant progress in material civilization, fundamentally changed the way of life and societal landscape of humanity. Since the 1990s, quantum control technology has made significant strides forward, ushering in a rapid evolution of quantum technologies, notably exemplified by quantum information science. This encompasses domains such as quantum communication, quantum computing, and quantum precision measurement, offering paradigm-shifting solutions for enhancing information transmission security, accelerating computational speed, and elevating measurement precision. These advances hold the potential to provide crucial underpinning for national security and the high-quality development of the national economy. The swift progression of quantum information technology heralds the advent of the second quantum revolution. Following nearly three decades of concerted efforts, China’s quantum information technology field as a whole has achieved a leap. Specifically, China presently assumes a prominent international role in both the research and practical application of quantum communication, leading the global domain in quantum computing, and achieving international preeminence or advanced standing across various facets of quantum precision measurement. Presently, it is imperative to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the developmental priorities in the realm of quantum information in China for the forthcoming 5 to 10 years, in alignment with national strategic priorities and the evolving landscape of international competition. This will enable the proactive establishment of next-generation information technology systems that are secure, efficient, autonomous, and controllable.

Quantum Information Theory

Sulekh Kumar, Momita Kundu, Kamla Kumari +1 more

Quantum information theory represents a revolutionary paradigm that merges quantum mechanics with information science, fundamentally transforming our understanding of computation, communication, and information processing. This chapter provides a comprehensive examination of quantum information theory, exploring its theoretical foundations, practical applications, and transformative potential across multiple domains. We investigate the core principles including quantum bits (qubits), superposition, entanglement, and quantum interference, while analyzing their implications for quantum computing, cryptography, and communication protocols. Through systematic literature review and methodological analysis, we present current research trends, breakthrough developments, and emerging applications. The chapter addresses significant challenges including decoherence, error correction, and scalability issues that currently limit practical implementation. Our discussion encompasses quantum algorithms, quantum error correction codes, and the evolving landscape of quantum technologies. We conclude by identifying future research directions and the potential societal impact of quantum information systems, emphasizing both the unprecedented opportunities and the technical obstacles that define this rapidly advancing field.

A Survey on Various Aspects of Quantum Cryptography

Rajesh Kumar Pateriya, Dr.J.L. Rana, Anupriya Gupta

In the era of information technology the need for secure communication has become increasingly important. Cryptography is a technology for creating the core of information security we use cryptography for making data secure which is the science of information protection from unauthorized interception and tempering. Most modern cryptographic studies design cryptosystems and algorithms using mathematical concepts which are based either on factorization or on discrete logarithm problem. In recent years quantum information research has lead to the discovery of a number of remarkable new paradigms for information processing and communication. These developments include quantum cryptography schemes that offer unconditionally secure information transport guaranteed by quantum-mechanical laws, which provide protection of system security, and optimization of system efficiency and detects intrusion and wiretap. Today quantum cryptography is used in various application for transferring secure data without the fear of keys being compromised. This paper reviews the various areas where quantum  cryptography is successfully implemented, its advantages disadvantages & technical issues.
