Single-photon frequency down-conversion experiment

Hiroki Takesue

We report a single-photon frequency down-conversion experiment. Using the difference frequency generation process in a periodically poled lithium niobate waveguide, we successfully observed the phase-preserved frequency down-conversion of a coherent pulse train with an average photon number per pulse of $<$$1$, from the $0.7$ $\ensuremath{\mu}$m visible wavelength band to the $1.3$ $\ensuremath{\mu}$m telecom band. We expect this technology to become an important tool for flexible photonic quantum networking, including the realization of quantum repeater systems over optical fiber using atom-photon entanglement sources for the visible wavelength bands.

Quantum Frequency Conversion of Single Photons from a Nitrogen-Vacancy Center in Diamond to Telecommunication Wavelengths

A. Dréau, Anna Tcheborateva, Aboubakr El Mahdaoui +2 more

Entanglement-based quantum networks are strongly pursued worldwide, because of their potential impact on secure communication, distributed quantum computing, and timekeeping, for example. Among quantum emitters, the N-$V$ center in diamond is a leading candidate for implementing such networks, but high photon loss at the N-$V$ emission wavelength hinders long-distance entanglement (beyond ~1 km). The authors surmount this hurdle by down-converting single N-$V$ photons to a telecom wavelength, via nonlinear optics plus efficient filtering and excellent control of a lone emitter. This technological achievement is a critical step toward large-scale quantum networks.

We propose a practical implementation for single-photon down conversion based on difference frequency generation by a nonlinear crystal. A theoretical model is presented, where the quantum noise sources, relevant to the process, are identified.

We report a single-photon frequency down-conversion experiment. Using the difference frequency generation process in a periodically poled lithium niobate waveguide, we successfully observed the phase-preserved frequency down-conversion of a coherent pulse train with an average photon number per pulse of <<<111, from the 0.70.70.7 $\ensuremath{\mu}$m visible wavelength band to the 1.31.31.3 $\ensuremath{\mu}$m telecom band. We expect this technology to become an important tool for flexible photonic quantum networking, including the realization of quantum repeater systems over optical fiber using atom-photon entanglement sources for the visible wavelength bands.
