Abstract

We report on the first direct observation of fast spin-exchange coherent oscillations between different long-lived electronic orbitals of ultracold 173 Yb fermions. We measure, in a model-independent way, the strength of the exchange interaction driving this coherent process. This observation allows us to retrieve important information on the interorbital collisional properties of 173 Yb atoms and paves the way to novel quantum simulations of paradigmatic models of two-orbital quantum magnetism.

Observation of an Orbital Interaction-Induced Feshbach Resonance in Yb 173

M. Höfer, Luis Riegger, Francesco Scazza +6 more

We report on the experimental observation of a novel interorbital Feshbach resonance in ultracold (173)Yb atoms. This opens up the possibility of tuning the interactions between the (1)S(0) and (3)P(0) metastable state, both possessing zero total electronic angular momentum. The resonance is observed at experimentally accessible magnetic field strengths and occurs universally for all hyperfine state combinations. We characterize the resonance in the bulk via interorbital cross thermalization as well as in a three-dimensional lattice using high-resolution clock-line spectroscopy. Our measurements are well described by a generalized two-channel model of the orbital-exchange interactions.

Observation of Coherent Multiorbital Polarons in a Two-Dimensional Fermi Gas

Nelson Darkwah Oppong, Luis Riegger, Oscar Bettermann +5 more

We report on the experimental observation of multiorbital polarons in a two-dimensional Fermi gas of ^{173}Yb atoms formed by mobile impurities in the metastable ^{3}P_{0} orbital and a Fermi sea in the ground-state ^{1}S_{0} orbital. We spectroscopically probe the energies of attractive and repulsive polarons close to an orbital Feshbach resonance and characterize their coherence by measuring the quasiparticle residue. For all probed interaction parameters, the repulsive polaron is a long-lived quasiparticle with a decay rate more than 2 orders of magnitude below its energy. We formulate a many-body theory, which accurately treats the interorbital interactions in two dimensions and agrees well with the experimental results. Our work paves the way for the investigation of many-body physics in multiorbital ultracold Fermi gases.

Antiferromagnetic interorbital spin-exchange interaction of Yb171

Koki Ono, Jun Kobayashi, Yoshiki Amano +2 more

We report on the investigation of the scattering properties between the ground state $^{1}S_{0}$ and the metastable state $^{3}P_{0}$ of the fermionic isotope of $^{171}\mathrm{Yb}$. We measure the $s$-wave scattering lengths in the two-orbital collision channels as ${a}_{eg}^{+}=225(13){a}_{0}$ and ${a}_{eg}^{\ensuremath{-}}=355(6){a}_{0}$, using clock transition spectroscopy in a three-dimensional optical lattice. The results show that the interorbital spin-exchange interaction is antiferromagnetic, indicating that $^{171}\mathrm{Yb}$ is a promising isotope for the quantum simulation of the Kondo effect with the two-orbital system.

Observation of electron spin interactions between Rydberg atoms

Le Ruan, Ziqi Zhou, Yuchen Guo +2 more

We report the observation of electron spin interactions between Rydberg atoms, which are driven by spin-orbit coupling through second-order dipole perturbation and exhibit a spatial anisotropy governed by the atomic configuration. Specifically, we observe coherent electron spin exchange dynamics, with the measured coupling strength agreeing well with both numerical calculations and theoretical models. Furthermore, we show that global microwave dressing enables active engineering and dynamical freezing of the spin exchange by introducing a differential AC Stark shift between the participating states. Additionally, we achieve tunability of the interaction by applying a stronger magnetic field, which effectively modifies the energy contributions of the underlying spin-orbit coupling channels. Finally, measuring spin dynamics in one-dimensional multi-atom chains aligned parallel or perpendicular to the magnetic field provides a self-consistent validation of the anisotropic XXZ framework. This electron spin interaction natively features spin-position coupling and enables a natural mapping onto the Heisenberg-Kitaev model. Our findings reveal a new class of electron spin-spin interactions among Rydberg atoms, expanding the scope of quantum simulation with Rydberg atom arrays.

Superexchange-mediated magnetization dynamics with ultracold alkaline-earth atoms in an optical lattice

Shaobing Zhu, Jun Qian, Yuzhu Wang

Superexchange and inter-orbital spin-exchange interactions are key ingredients for understanding (orbital) quantum magnetism in strongly correlated systems and have been realized in ultracold atomic gases. Here we study the spin dynamics of ultracold alkaline-earth atoms in an optical lattice when the two exchange interactions coexist. In the superexchange interaction dominating regime, we find that the time-resolved spin imbalance shows a remarkable modulated oscillation, which can be attributed to the interplay between local and nonlocal quantum mechanical exchange mechanisms. Moreover, the filling of the long-lived excited atoms affects the collapse and revival of the magnetization dynamics. These observations can be realized in state-dependent optical lattices combined with the state-of-the-art advances in optical lattice clock spectroscopy.
