Abstract

We propose using the pulse-on-background method and multiple gain lines to reduce pulse distortion in slow/fast light pulse propagation based on CPO and linear resonance system, respectively. Both methods will be described in this work.

Pulse distortion in linear slow light systems: theoretical limits and compensation strategies

Miguel González‐Herráez, Luc Thévenaz A

We study analytically pulse distortion in linear slow light systems, and provide some useful limits on these devices. Additionally, we also show that the contributions of phase and amplitude broadening can be de-coupled and quantified. It is observed that phase broadening is generally smaller than amplitude broadening in conventional slow light media (lorentzian gain profile) except for very large fractional delays, where it becomes larger. Upon these expressions, we may envisage new strategies to minimize the distortion in the delaying of pulses, depending on the specific application and the required fractional delay. To overcome the residual distortion, we show that nonlinear systems can lead to a resharpening of the pulses and a re-generation of the filtered frequencies.

Propagation of light pulses in a fast-light medium: Interplay between gain and dispersion

Thomas Crouzil, M. A. Bouchène

We consider here the situation of a Gaussian pulse that probes a medium exhibiting two close resonance lines. We study the spatial behavior of the light pulse and emphasize some overlooked features. Moreover, for long pulses and a fast-light medium, we show that the spatial distortion of the pulse due to residual gain at the central laser wavelength cannot be reduced without enhancing another distortion effect due to spectral wing amplification.

Distortion Management on SBS Based Slow Light

Xianpu Su, Lingling Gu, Jin Zhou +3 more

A different definition on the amplitude and phase of transform function is proposed to maximize slow-light pulse delay to a constraint on the allowable pulse distortion and even provide a more simple method of numerical calculation for kinds of structures. In addition, extremely simple formulas describing multi gain structures generally are deduced on amplitude deviation, phase deviation, and time-delay. Moreover, relations of time-delay on gain ratio, separation of multi gains are figured out under distortion management.
