Investigation of atomic radiative recombination processes by the Bohmian-mechanics method

Abstract

The light-emission process by the recombination of an ionized electron with its parent ion is investigated by the Bohmian trajectory scheme, and the efficiency of light emission calculated by 20 Bohmian trajectories is qualitatively identical to that obtained by numerically solving the time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation. It is found that the efficiency of light emission by recombination is determined by the oscillation amplitude of the Bohmian particle's Coulomb acceleration. Along with the decrease of the energy of the incident Bohmian particle, the deepening of the ion's potential well, and the increase of the product factor of the bound-state and continuum-state populations, the oscillation amplitude of the particle's Coulomb acceleration increases.

Calculation of the Duration of the Atomic Tunneling Ionization in a Strong Electrostatic Field by Using Bohmian Trajectories Approach

Fu-Ming Guo, Ji-Gen Chen, Suyu Li +1 more

The duration of a bound electron tunneling through the barrier formed by atomic potential and electrostatic field is calculated by the Bohmian trajectories scheme. The time of the tunneling ionization decreases with the increase of the amplitude of the electrostatic field. By using the information about the position, velocity and force of the Bohmian trajectories, the dynamical process of tunneling through the barrier is investigated.

Revisiting the time-dependent ionization process through the Bohmian-mechanics method

Yang Song, Yujun Yang, Fu-Ming Guo +1 more

Abstract The ionization process of a hydrogen-like atom in the intense laser field is studied by the Bohmian-mechanics method. We propose a criterion for atomic ionization based on the total energy of a Bohmian particle (BP): when it is larger than or equal to zero, ionization occurs, when it is lower than zero, no ionization occurs. We find that the time-dependent ionization probabilities calculated by the Bohmian-mechanics and projection methods are almost the same under different laser parameters. Two typical Bohmian trajectories are selected to analyze the ionization process. The consistency between the time-dependent ionization probabilities calculated by the two methods is quantitatively analyzed from the aspect of the probability density of the wave-function.

Ionization of two-electron atom (xenon) studied by Bohmian mechanics theory*

Yang Song, Shu Han, Yujun Yang +2 more

The ionization dynamics of two-electron atom in an intense laser field is studied by the Bohmian mechanics (BM) theory, and the xenon atomic potential function is used as a model. The single ionization process and double ionization process are calculated by the BM theory and their results are in good agreement with those calculated by numerically solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation. The analyses of the types, trajectories, and forces of Bohmian particles (BPs) undergoing the single and double ionizations indicate that the re-collision process accounts for a considerable proportion in the singly ionized cases. Furthermore, the analysis of the work done by the external force acting on the BPs shows that the quantum force plays an important role in the re-collision process. This work is helpful in understanding the ionization of two-electron atom in an intense laser field.

Bohmian trajectories of the time-oscillating Schrödinger equations

Dandan Li, Jinqiao Duan, Lin Li +1 more

Bohmian mechanics is a non-relativistic quantum theory based on a particle approach. In this paper, we study the Schrödinger equation with a rapidly oscillating potential and the associated Bohmian trajectory. We prove that the corresponding Bohmian trajectory converges locally in a measure, and the limit coincides with the Bohmian trajectory for the effective Schrödinger equation on a finite time interval. This is beneficial for efficient simulation of the Bohmian trajectories in oscillating potential fields.

From a quantum to a classical description of intense laser–atom physics with Bohmian trajectories

XuanYang Lai, Qing-yu Cai, Minjie Zhan

In this paper, Bohmian mechanics is applied to intense laser–atom physics. The motion of an atomic electron in an intense laser field is obtained from the Bohm–Newton equation. We find that the quantum potential that dominates the quantum effect of a physical system becomes negligible as the electron is driven far from the parent ion by the intense laser field, i.e. the behavior of the electron smoothly tends towards classical soon after the electron is ionized. Our numerical calculations present direct positive evidence for semiclassical trajectory methods in intense laser–atom physics where the motion of the ionized electron is treated by classical mechanics, while quantum mechanics is needed before the ionization.

Three-body recombination of ultracold barium plasma created by two-step photoionization of atoms through an excited 6s6p P11 level

Н. И. Косарев

The kinetics of ionization and recombination of an ultracold barium plasma created in a two-step process, taking into account the transfer of resonant radiation in 3D cylindrical geometry, is studied by numerical simulation. At the first step, a pump laser excites the upper level of the resonant transition 6s2 S10↔6s6p P11 (λ1=553.5 nm). At the second step, the laser with quantum energy exceeding the ionization potential from the level 6s6p P11 (λ2=417.79 nm) ionizes the atoms. A scheme is proposed for increasing the efficiency of electron yield: at the second ionization step, the laser radiation with frequency corresponding to the continuum from the metastable D32 is used. The electron temperature from the initial value 0.1 K during the action of the pump and ionizing lasers increases by more than 200 times due to superelastic processes. As a result, the time of three-body recombination of plasma increases significantly. The results of numerical simulation indirectly confirm the fact of Killian et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 83(23), 4776 (1999)] that the deceleration of recombination of ultracold xenon plasma can be explained by the heating of electrons in superelastic quenching collisions.
