Spin squeezing under decoherence: Role of the quantum phase transition

Abstract

In order to witness multipartite correlations beyond pairwise entanglement, we study the spin-squeezing evolution of a spin-1/2 ensemble in environments with quantum phase transitions. Each spin half of the ensemble evolves under its own decoherence channel, which is modeled by a central spin 1/2 surrounded by a spin-1/2 $XY$ chain. We employ four spin-squeezing parameters to describe squeezing, and their expressions at time $t$ are analytically calculated for the spin ensemble in a collective initial state. It is found that spin squeezing of an auxiliary ensemble signals very well the critical regions of the environment. Quantum fluctuations of the environment accelerate the decay of spin squeezing and dramatically change spin squeezing.

Sudden vanishing of spin squeezing under decoherence

Xiaoguang Wang, Adam Miranowicz, Yu-xi Liu +2 more

In order to witness multipartite correlations beyond pairwise entanglement, spin-squeezing parameters are analytically calculated for a spin ensemble in a collective initial state under three different decoherence channels. It is shown that, in analogy to pairwise entanglement, the spin squeezing described by different parameters can suddenly become zero at different vanishing times. This finding shows the general occurrence of sudden vanishing phenomena of quantum correlations in many-body systems, which here is referred to as spin-squeezing sudden death (SSSD). It is shown that the SSSD usually occurs due to decoherence and that SSSD never occurs for some initial states in the amplitude-damping channel. We also analytically obtain the vanishing times of spin squeezing.

Quantum Renormalization of Spin Squeezing in Spin Chains

Leila Balazadeh, G. Najarbashi, Ali Tavana

By employing quantum renormalization group (QRG) method, we investigate quantum phase transitions (QPT) in the Ising transverse field (ITF) model and in the XXZ Heisenberg model, with and without Dzyaloshinskii Moriya (DM) interaction, on a periodic chain of N lattice sites. We adopt a new approach called spin squeezing as an indicator of QPT. Spin squeezing, through analytical expression of a spin squeezing parameter, is calculated after each step of QRG. As the scale of the system becomes larger, (after many QRG steps), the ground state (GS) spin squeezing parameters show an abrupt change at a quantum critical point (QCP). Moreover, in all of the studied models, the first derivative of the spin squeezing parameter with respect to the control parameter is discontinuous, which is a signature of QPT. The spin squeezing parameters develop their saturated values after enough QRG iterations. The divergence exponent of the first derivative of the spin squeezing parameter in the near vicinity of the QCP is associated with the critical exponent of the correlation length.

Quantum spin squeezing

This paper reviews quantum spin squeezing, which characterizes the sensitivity of a state with respect to SU(2) rotations, and is significant for both entanglement detection and high-precision metrology. We first present various definitions of spin squeezing parameters, explain their origin and properties for typical states, and then discuss spin-squeezed states produced with nonlinear twisting Hamiltonians. Afterwards, we explain pairwise correlations and entanglement in spin-squeezed states, as well as the relations between spin squeezing and quantum Fisher information, where the latter plays a central role in quantum metrology. We also review the applications of spin squeezing for detecting quantum chaos and quantum phase transitions, as well as the influence of decoherence on spin squeezing. Finally, we review several experimental realizations of spin squeezing, as well as their corresponding theoretical backgrounds, including: producing spin-squeezed states via particle collisions in Bose-Einstein condensates, transferring photon squeezing to atomic ensembles, and generating spin squeezing via quantum non-demolition measurements.

Quantum spin fluctuations in dynamical quantum phase transitions

Cheuk Yiu Wong, Hadi Cheraghi, Wing Chi Yu

Quantum phase transitions have long been studied in their relation to quantum fluctuations. These fluctuations can be quantified as the degree of spin squeezing in spin models, where one of the two noncommutative observables breaks the standard quantum limit of measurement by minimizing its uncertainty. However, the understanding of their role in dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs) is still incomplete. In this work, we combine the Loschmidt amplitude, which detects DQPTs, and the spin-squeezing parameter (SSP), the quantification of spin squeezing, to study the spin dynamics in a quenched interacting spin model around DQPT. We show that the extremum, mostly maximum, of SSP occurs near DQPTs when the system is quenched between different phases. These phenomena further unveil the spin correlations during DQPTs, for which the highest contribution aligns with the preferred direction of spin interactions in the postquenched phase. We also demonstrate that the time evolution of SSP differs for various quench scenarios. These findings provide us with physical insights into the dynamics of quantum fluctuations around DQPTs and their relation to the equilibrium phase diagrams.

Critical dynamics and decoherence

Bogdan Damski, H. T. Quan, Wojciech Hubert Zurek

We study dynamics of decoherence in a generic model where the environment is driven and undergoes a quantum phase transition. We model the environment by the Ising chain in the transverse field, and assume that the decohering system is a central spin-1/2. We found that when the environment is quenched slowly through the critical point, the decoherence factor of the central spin undergoes rapid decay that encodes the critical exponents of the environment. We also found that decoherence in a non-equilibrated, kink-contaminated, environment can be stronger than in a vacuum one. We derived a remarkably simple analytical expression that describes post-transition decoherence and predicts periodicities involving all system parameters. This research connects the fields of decoherence, quantum phase transitions, and Kibble-Zurek non-equilibrium dynamics.

On decoherence induced by a spin chain: role of initial prepared states

Lionel Tenemeza Kenfack, Moïse Raphaël Tsimbo Fokou, Martin Tchoffo +2 more

We study the decoherence process induced by a spin chain environment on a central spin consisting of R spins and we apply it on the dynamics of quantum correlations (QCs) of three interacting qubits. In order to see the impact of the initial prepared state of the spin chain environment on the decoherence process, we assume the spin chain environment prepared in two main ways, namely, either the ground state or the vacuum state in the momentum space. We develop a general heuristic analysis when the spin chain environment in prepared in these states, in order to understand the decoherence process against the physical parameters. We show that the decoherence process is mainly determined by the choice of the initial prepared state, the number of spin of the chain, the coupling strength, the anisotropy parameter and the position from the quantum critical point. In fact, in the strong coupling regime, the decoherence process does not appear for the environment prepared in the vacuum state and it behaves oscillatory in the case of evolution from ground state. On the other hand, in the weak coupling regime and far from the quantum critical point, decoherence induced by the ground state is weaker than that of the vacuum state. Finally, we show that, QCs are completely shielded from decoherence in the case of evolution from the W state and obey the same dynamics as the decoherence factors for the GHZ state.
