Abstract

Considering two atom bits in Bell state initially, one bit was injected into a vacuum cavity to produce resonance while leaving the other outside. The controllable coherence of an atom bit inside the cavity was investigated by manipulating the atom bit outside the cavity. For the cases of before and after the Hadamard,Hadamard-like,Y,and phase logic gate manipulations on the atom bit outside the cavity, the correlation of two kinds of initial Bell state was discussed by numerical calculation. The time evolution curves of off-diagonal elements in the reduced density matrix for the atom bit inside the cavity was studied. The results show that the off-diagonal elements of the density matrix for the atom bit inside the cavity are zero at any moment before operating the atom bit outside the cavity. That is,the atom bit inside the cavity is always in a mixed state or classical states, and its coherence is always suppressed. However, after Hadamard gate and Hadamard-like gate operations and ground state measurements, offdiagonal elements in the reduced density matrix of the atom bit inside the cavity show the 2π period time evolution, and the coherence can be restored except(2n+1)π/2.At nπthe maximal coherence superposition state and general coherence superposition state were prepared, and a R(π/2)rotation correlation existed between the two kinds of Bell states. In addition, performing Y gate and phase gate operations on the outside atom bit,the coherence for the inside atom bit cannot restore. The necessary condition for the restoration of the coherence of the inside atom bit was found out as following:while logic gate operations manipulate the interactions between the atom bit inside the cavity and its environment, and the two atom bits are separated from the field,a strongly coherent entanglement is necessary between the two atom bits.

Preparation of optimal entropy squeezing state of atomic qubit inside the cavity via two-photon process and manipulation of atomic qubit outside the cavity

Bingju Zhou, Zhao-Hui Peng, Chun-Xia Jia +2 more

Considering two atomic qubits initially in Bell states, we send one qubit into a vacuum cavity with two-photon resonance and leave the other one outside. Using quantum information entropy squeezing theory, the time evolutions of the entropy squeezing factor of the atomic qubit inside the cavity are discussed for two cases, i.e., before and after rotation and measurement of the atomic qubit outside the cavity. It is shown that the atomic qubit inside the cavity has no entropy squeezing phenomenon and is always in a decoherent state before the operating atomic qubit outside the cavity. However, the periodical entropy squeezing phenomenon emerges and the optimal entropy squeezing state can be prepared for the atomic qubit inside the cavity by adjusting the rotation angle, choosing the interaction time between the atomic qubit and the cavity, controlling the probability amplitudes of subsystem states. Its physical essence is cutting the entanglement between the atomic qubit and its environment, causing the atomic qubit inside the cavity to change from the initial decoherent state into maximum coherent superposition state, which is a possible way of recovering the coherence of a single atomic qubit in the noise environment.

Coherent Operation of a Tunable Quantum Phase Gate in Cavity QED

Arno Rauschenbeutel, Gilles Nogues, S. Osnaghi +4 more

We have realized a quantum phase gate operating on quantum bits carried by a single Rydberg atom and a zero- or one-photon field in a high- $Q$ cavity. The gate operation is based on the dephasing of the atom-field state produced by a full cycle of quantum Rabi oscillation. The dephasing angle, conditioned to the initial atom-field state, can be adjusted over a wide range by tuning the atom-cavity frequency difference. We demonstrate that the gate preserves qubit coherence and generates entanglement. This gate is an essential tool for the nondestructive measurement of single photons and for the manipulation of many-qubit entanglement in cavity QED.

Colloquium: Manipulating quantum entanglement with atoms and photons in a cavity

J. M. Raimond, M. Brune, S. Haroche

After they have interacted, quantum particles generally behave as a single nonseparable entangled system. The concept of entanglement plays an essential role in quantum physics. We have performed entanglement experiments with Rydberg atoms and microwave photons in a cavity and tested quantum mechanics in situations of increasing complexity. Entanglement resulted either from a resonant exchange of energy between atoms and the cavity field or from dispersive energy shifts affecting atoms and photons when they were not resonant. With two entangled particles (two atoms or one atom and a photon), we have realized new versions of the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen situation. The detection of one particle projected the other, at a distance, in a correlated state. This process could be viewed as an elementary measurement, one particle being a ‘‘meter’’ measuring the other. We have performed a ‘‘quantum nondemolition’’ measurement of a single photon, which we detected repeatedly without destroying it. Entanglement is also essential to understand decoherence, the process accounting for the classical appearance of the macroscopic world. A mesoscopic superposition of states (‘‘Schrodinger cat’’) gets rapidly entangled with its environment, losing its quantum coherence. We have prepared a Schrodinger cat made of a few photons and studied the dynamics of its decoherence, in an experiment which constitutes a glimpse at the quantum/classical boundary. We have also investigated entanglement as a resource for the processing of quantum information. By using quantum two-state systems (qubits) instead of classical bits of information, one can perform logical operations exploiting quantum interferences and taking advantage of the properties of entanglement. Manipulating as qubits atoms and photons in a cavity, we have operated a quantum gate and applied it to the generation of a complex three-particle entangled state. We finally discuss the perspectives opened by these experiments for further fundamental studies.

Controlling dipole squeezing of two atoms inside a cavity via manipulating an atom outside the cavity

Tang-Kun Liu, Ji‐Suo Wang, Jian Feng +1 more

Considering that three two-level atoms are initially in the GHZ single state and two of the atoms are simultaneously put into a cavity initially in the coherent state, we investigate the dipole squeezing properties of the two atoms inside the cavity under the condition of resonant interaction. It is shown that dipole squeezing properties of the two atoms inside the cavity are strongly affected by rotation manipulating of the atom outside the cavity.
